Khartoum is one of the eighteen states of Sudan. Although it is the smallest state by area (22,142 km2), it is the most populous (5,274,321 in 2008 census). It contains the country's largest city by population, Omdurman, and the city of Khartoum, which is the capital of the state as well as the national capital of Sudan. The capital city contains offices of the state, governmental and non-governmental organizations, cultural institutions, and the main airport.
The city is located in the heart of Sudan at the confluence of the White Nile and the Blue Nile, where the two rivers unite to form the River Nile. The confluence of the two rivers creates a unique effect. As they join, each river retains its own color: the White Nile with its bright whiteness and the Blue Nile with its alluvial brown color. These colors are more visible in the flood season.
The state lies between longitudes 31.5 to 34 °E and latitudes 15 to 16 °N. It is surrounded by River Nile State in the north-east, in the north-west by the Northern State, in the east and southeast by the states of Kassala, Gedaref and Gezira, and in the west by North Kurdufan.
Khartoum (/kɑːrˈtuːm/ kar-TOOM) is the capital and second largest city of Sudan and Khartoum state. It is located at the confluence of the White Nile, flowing north from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile, flowing west from Ethiopia. The location where the two Niles meet is known as "al-Mogran" المقرن, meaning the confluence. The main Nile continues to flow north towards Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.
Divided by the Niles, Khartoum is a tripartite metropolis with an estimated overall population of over five million people, consisting of Khartoum proper, and linked by bridges to Khartoum North (الخرطوم بحري al-Kharṭūm Baḥrī) and Omdurman (أم درمان Umm Durmān) to the west.
The origin of the word Khartoum is uncertain. One theory argues that khartoum is derived from Arabic kharṭūm خرطوم meaning 'trunk' or 'hose', probably referring to the narrow strip of land extending between the Blue and White Niles. Captain J. A. Grant, who reached Khartoum in 1863 with Captain Speke's expedition, thought that the name was most probably from the Arabic قرطم qurtum, safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), which was cultivated extensively in Egypt for its oil to be used as fuel. Some scholars speculate that the word derives from kiertoum in the Dinka language, which means "the junction of two rivers."

Video from the Council for Environment Affairs in Khartoum State, Sudan, about the disaster risk reduction work of the community on Tuti Island. The Tuti community was named a Champion of Disaster Risk Reduction to mark the 2015 edition of International Day for Disaster Reduction. The 18,000-strong community of Tuti, a River Nile island near the Sudanese capital Khartoum, has long been highly vulnerable to floods. The inhabitants of Tuti Island, located where the Blue and White Niles merge, have learned over the past 500 years how to reduce and manage their risk. They successfully faced down major flood crises in 1946, 1988, 1998, 2006, 2013, and 2014, all of which caused great casualties elsewhere in the country, but during which there were no human losses reported on Tuti. After ce...

The US state department has said it is issuing a global travel alert because of an unspecified al-Qaeda threat. In a statement, the department said the potential for an attack was particularly strong in the Middle East and North Africa. It comes shortly after the US announced 21 embassies and consulates in 18 countries would be shut on Sunday. The alert expires on 31 August 2013, the department said. It recommended US citizens travelling abroad be vigilant. "Current information suggests that al-Qa'ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," the statement said. Much of the Arab world celebrates Mother’s day on March 21, in contrast with the more internationally recognized dates. Sudan's Ministry of Justice held a celebration for 12 prisoners set free earlier from a women's jail in Omdurman area, in the capital Khartoum. In addition to the usual gifts, mothers in Sudan receive dresses from their children to appreciate them. For the prisoners, however, spending time with their children and families provided much satisfaction. One of the prisoners released even read a letter from her son.

Travel in Sudan outside Khartoum and its suburb Omdurman is considered dangerous. Two borderline civil wars continue to see violence, in Southern Sudan and particularly in Darfur, while extremist groups target foreign visitors for attacks and kidnapping, particularly in the Upper Nile regions targetting foreigners related to the oil industry. The U.S. State Department has renewed its annual travel advisory for Sudan, and continues to recommend against all non-essential travel to the country.

An investigation has been launched by Khartoum officials after a suspect vulture was reportedly found in Sudan tagged with an Israeli GPS chip and a leg band labeled "Israel Nature Service" and "Hebrew University, Jerusalem." Khartoum's media claimed that the device was capable of taking photos and sending them back to Jewish state; but Israel's National Parks Service dismissed the allegation, saying that both the band and the GPS chip were nothing more than standard migration trackers.
Concern is growing over the fate of nine UK medical students who are believed to have travelled to Syria, where they are said to be working in hospitals in territory controlled by the Islamic State. The nine UK students, five male and four female, all of Sudanese heritage, were studying medicine in the Sudanese capital Khartoum before traveling to Syria. A Turkish lawmaker familiar with the case said he believed the group had been 'brainwashed'. At least three of the group had graduated, when on March 12 they caught Turkish Airlines flight 681 to Istanbul. From there, they took the long bus journey to the border with Syria. One of the group then sent a text message to a relative before smugglers helped them cross the border. Turkish authorities believe the group is now working in hospi...

Afghanistan and Pakistan, though situated in Asia, are considered part of the Greater Middle East. U.S. intervention in both Afghanistan and Pakistan started with the Carter Administration after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. American policy has been instrumental in coordinating the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan.
