The Tuti community was named a Champion of Disaster Risk Reduction to mark the 2015 edition of International Day for Disaster Reduction.
The 18,000-strong community of Tuti, a River Nile island near the Sudanese capital Khartoum, has long been highly vulnerable to floods.
The inhabitants of Tuti Island, located where the Blue and White Niles merge, have learned over the past 500 years how to reduce and manage their risk.
They successfully faced down major flood crises in 1946, 1988, 1998, 2006, 2013, and 2014, all of which caused great casualties elsewhere in the country, but during which there were no human losses reported on Tuti.
After centuries of experience, Tuti’s inhabitants have accumulated their own indigenous knowledge and skills, developing early warning systems based on different tones of drums, horns and whistles that alerted the community of an upcoming flooding.
Tuti’s successful anti-flood programme also includes early fund-raising, clear roles and responsibilities assignment and especially a strong community involvement, from stablising watches to building up extra embankments.
Moreover, it is very common that children, men and women are highly skilled in swimming, making them all the more resilient to the Nile's flooding.
In the islanders' culture, songs about floods are well known among the population and handed down from generation to generation as a way to remember their success in dealing with the floods.
International Day for Disaster Reduction takes place every 13 October. The focus of the 2015 edition is traditional, indigenous and local knowledge, which complement modern science and boost the resilience of individuals and societies.
Achieving substantial reductions in mortality and economic losses are key targets of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. The Sendai Framework seeks to promote greater action on the management not only of disasters but also of disaster risk.

Violence during protests against fuel subsidy cuts in Sudan has left more than two dozen dead, according to one source.
A medic at a Khartoum hospital has been quoted as saying it has the bodies of 27 people killed in the trouble.
Reports in international media also speak of similar numbers of casualties.
Thousands of demonstrators torched cars and petrol stations in the centre of the capital yesterday.
Police fired tear gas to try to disperse them.
The state-linked Sudanese Media Centre quoted a state governor as saying the violence was premeditated. Rioters were accused of looting banks and stores and attacking power stations.
Reports said schools in Khartoum state have been closed until September 30.
Internet access went down across the country, although the cause was not immediately clear. A private sector telecoms official told the Reuters news agency the government had cut off internet without consulting telecoms firms.
The protests erupted earlier this week when the government announced another round of cuts to fuel subsidies, causing petrol prices to soar.
Sudan's economy has been in crisis since it lost around three quarters of its oil output to South Sudan - which broke away and became independent in 2011.
The Arab-African country has long suffered insurgencies in its poor regions but this is the worst unrest in the capital for years.

Khartoum (state)
Khartoum is one of the eighteen states of Sudan. Although it is the smallest state by area (22,142 km2), it is the most populous (5,274,321 in 2008 census). It contains the country's largest city by population, Omdurman, and the city of Khartoum, which is the capital of the state as well as the national capital of Sudan. The capital city contains offices of the state, governmental and non-governmental organizations, cultural institutions, and the main airport.
The city is located in the heart of Sudan at the confluence of the White Nile and the Blue Nile, where the two rivers unite to form the River Nile. The confluence of the two rivers creates a unique effect. As they join, each river retains its own color: the White Nile with its bright whiteness and the Blue Nile with its alluvial brown color. These colors are more visible in the flood season.
The state lies between longitudes 31.5 to 34 °E and latitudes 15 to 16 °N. It is surrounded by River Nile State in the north-east, in the north-west by the Northern State, in the east and southeast by the states of Kassala, Gedaref and Gezira, and in the west by North Kurdufan.

Etymology
The origin of the word Khartoum is uncertain. One theory argues that khartoum is derived from Arabic kharṭūm خرطوم meaning 'trunk' or 'hose', probably referring to the narrow strip of land extending between the Blue and White Niles. Captain J. A. Grant, who reached Khartoum in 1863 with Captain Speke's expedition, thought that the name was most probably from the Arabic قرطم qurtum, safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), which was cultivated extensively in Egypt for its oil to be used as fuel. Some scholars speculate that the word derives from kiertoum in the Dinka language, which means "the junction of two rivers."

In the islanders' culture, songs about floods are well known among the population and handed down from generation to generation as a way to remember their success in dealing with the floods.

Sudan's economy has been in crisis since it lost around three quarters of its oil output to South Sudan - which broke away and became independent in 2011.
The Arab-African country has long suffered insurgencies in its poor regions but this is the worst unrest in the capital for years.

In a statement, the department said the potential for an attack was particularly strong in the Middle East and North Africa. Much of the Arab world celebrates Mother’s day on March 21, in contrast with the more internationally recognized dates. Sudan's Ministry of Justice held a celebration for 12 prisoners set free earlier from a women's jail in Omdurman area, in the capital Khartoum. In addition to the usual gifts, mothers in Sudan receive dresses from their children to appreciate them. For the prisoners, however, spending time with their children and families provided much satisfaction. One of the prisoners released even read a letter from her son.

The alert expires on 31 August 2013, the department said. It recommended US citizens travelling abroad be vigilant.
"Current information suggests that al-Qa'ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," the statement said.
'Not chit chat'
Dutch Ruppersberger, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said the threat was not prompted by "the regular chit chat" gleaned from would-be militants online or elsewhere.
"The most important thing we have to do is protect American lives," he told the Associated Press news agency.
An unnamed senior US official told NBC the threat may be related to the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which ends next week.
In the Muslim world, Sunday is a work day. In other parts of the world US diplomatic offices are shut on Sunday.
"It is possible we may have additional days of closing as well," a senior state department official told the BBC on Thursday.
The official said the state department had "been apprised of information" leading it to take these "precautionary steps... out of an abundance of caution".
Last year on 11 September, the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was attacked, leaving four Americans dead.
Other embassies are routinely targets of protesters.

Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. It is the third-most populous municipality in the European Union after Greater London and Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the fourth-most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, London, and the Ruhr Area.
The city is located on the river Manzanares both in the centre of the country and Community of Madrid (which comprises the city of Madrid, its subsequent conurbation and extended suburbs and villages); this community is bordered by the autonomous communities of Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha. As the capital city of Spain, seat of government, and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also the political center of Spain. The current mayor is Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón from the center-right People's Party. He has been in office since 2003, when he left the Presidency of the Autonomous Community of Madrid and stood as the candidate to replace outgoing mayor José María Álvarez del Manzano, also from the PP. In the last local elections of 2007, Ruiz-Gallardón increased the PP majority in the City Council to 34 seats out of 57, taking 55.5% of the popular vote and winning in all but two districts.
Due to its economic output, standard of living, and market size, Madrid is considered the major financial center of the Iberian Peninsula; it hosts the head offices of the vast majority of the major Spanish companies, as well as the headquarters of three of the world's 100 largest companies (Telefónica, Repsol-YPF, Banco Santander).
While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the huge Royal Palace of Madrid; the Teatro Real (Royal theatre) with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro park, founded in 1631; the imposing 19th-century National Library building (founded in 1712) containing some of Spain's historical archives; an archaeological museum of international reputation; and three superb art museums: Prado Museum, which hosts one of the finest art collections in the world, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, a museum of modern art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, housed in the renovated Villahermosa Palace.
The population of the city is roughly 3.2 million (as of December 2005), while the estimated urban area population is 5.1 million. The entire population of the Madrid metropolitan area (urban area and suburbs) is calculated to be 5.84 million. The city spans a total of 698 km² (234 sq mi).

Sudan -- United States relations are extremely complicated, both politically and economically. China is critical of Sudan's human rights record and has sent a strong UN Peacekeeping force to Darfur. Many Sudanese, both civilians and Government officials say that the interference of the U.S. and other Western nations in Darfur and against leader Omar al-Bashir is part of a covert plot to throw their country in economic (since business relations between the two have been defunct since 1997), governmental, and territorial unrest.
U.S. relations with Sudan were further strained in the 1990s. Sudan backed Iraq in its invasion of Kuwait and provided sanctuary and assistance to Islamic terrorist groups. In the early and mid-1990s, Carlos the Jackal, Osama bin Laden, Abu Nidal, and other terrorist leaders resided in Khartoum. Sudan's role in the radical Pan-Arab Islamic Conference represented a matter of great concern to the security of American officials and dependents in Khartoum, resulting in several drawdowns and/or evacuations of U.S. personnel from Khartoum in the early-mid 1990s. Sudan's Islamist links with international terrorist organizations represented a special matter of concern for the U.S. Government, leading to Sudan's 1993 designation as a state sponsor of terrorism and a suspension of U.S. Embassy operations in Khartoum in 1996. In October 1997, the U.S. imposed comprehensive economic, trade, and financial sanctions against the Sudan. In August 1998, in the wake of the East Africa embassy bombings, the U.S. launched cruise missile strikes against Khartoum. The last U.S. Ambassador to the Sudan, Ambassador Tim Carney, departed post prior to this event and no new ambassador has been designated since. The U.S. Embassy is headed by a charge d'affaires.
