Judge Overturns Cleveland’s RNC Protest Regulations

Protesters gather at a downtown intersection as a Cleveland Police officer looks on following a not guilty verdict for Cleveland police officer Michael Brelo on manslaughter charges, in Cleveland, Ohio, May 23, 2015. Brelo was found not guilty on Saturday in the shooting deaths of an unarmed black man and a woman after a high-speed car chase in 2012, one in a series of cases that have raised questions over police conduct and race relations in the U.S.

A federal judge on Thursday overturned the city of Cleveland’s regulations on protest zones for next month’s Republican National Convention, ruling the limitations are too narrow and therefore unconstitutional. The decision comes after a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union that argued the city’s designated 3.5-square-mile “event zone” around the convention were too burdensome and therefore restricted speech. Lawyers for the city will appeal U.S. District Judge James Gwin’s decision.
