I grew up in Akron, Ohio on the Cuyahoga River in the 1960s and recall the foaming soap suds (before phosphates were removed from detergents), smell and the pollution. On June 22, 1969 a river fire in Cleveland captured national attention. This event helped spur an avalanche of pollution control activities resulting in the Clean Water Act, Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and the creation of the federal and state Environmental Protection Agencies. The 1969 fires was not the first. Fires plagued the Cuyahoga River beginning in 1936 when a spark from a blow torch ignited floating debris and oils. The largest river fire in 1952 caused over $1 million in damage to boats and a riverfront office building. By the 1960s the lower Cuyahoga River in Cleveland was used for waste disposal, and was choked with debris, oils, sludge, industrial wastes and sewage. These pollutants were considered a major source of impact to Lake Erie, which was considered dead at the time. The 1969 fire has been the subject of several songs, including Randy Newman's 1972 song "Burn On", R.E.M.'s 1986 song "Cuyahoga", and Adam Again's 1992 song "River on Fire". Over the past 40 years, the river has made a remarkable recovery. The Cuyahoga's story is a particularly apt example for future environmental efforts, because the once burning river can't just be cleaned up and "set aside" as a pristine wilderness park - it runs right through Cleveland, and like most American rivers, the Cuyahoga has to serve widely varying needs - aesthetic and economic, practical and natural, human and animal. The challenge: how to maintain industrial uses of the river near Lake Erie, encourage recreation and entertainment, and yet preserve the nature in and around the river. The 2008 film The Return of the Cuyahoga is a one-hour documentary about the death and rebirth of one of America's most emblematic waterways. In its history we see the end of the American frontier, the growth of industry, the scourge of pollution and the advent of a political movement that sought to end pollution. The Cuyahoga River[6] (/ˌkaɪ.əˈhɒɡə/ KY-ə-HOG-ə, or /ˌkaɪ.əˈhoʊɡə/ KY-ə-HOH-gə)[7][8][9][10] is located in Northeast Ohio in the United States and feeds Lake Erie. The river is famous for being "the river that caught fire," helping to spur the environmental movement in the late 1960s. Native Americans called this winding water "Cuyahoga," which means "crooked river" in anIroquoian language.
The Cuyahoga watershed begins its 100-mile (160 km) journey in Hambden, Ohio, flowing southward to the confluence of the East Branch Cuyahoga River and West Branch Cuyahoga River in Burton, where the Cuyahoga River officially begins.[1] It continues on its 84.9 miles (136.6 km) journey flowing southward to Cuyahoga Falls, where it turns sharply north and flows through theCuyahoga Valley National Park in northern Summit County and southern Cuyahoga County. It then flows through Independence,Valley View, Cuyahoga Heights, Newburgh Heights and Cleveland to its northern terminus, emptying into Lake Erie. The Cuyahoga River and its tributaries drain 813 square miles (2,110 km2) of land in portions of six counties.
The river is a relatively recent geological formation, formed by the advance and retreat of ice sheets during the last ice age. The finalglacial retreat, which occurred 10,000--12,000 years ago, caused changes in the drainage pattern near Akron. This change in pattern caused the originally southward-flowing Cuyahoga to flow to the north. As its newly reversed currents flowed toward Lake Erie, the river carved its way around glacial debris left by the receding ice sheet, resulting in the river's winding U-shape. These meanderings stretched the length of the river (which was only 30 miles (50 km) when travelled directly) into a 100-mile (160 km) trek from its headwaters to its mouth. The depth of the river (except where noted below) ranges from 3 to 6 ft (1 to 2 m).

THE RETURN OF THE CUYAHOGA

For centuries, the Cuyahoga River has been on the frontier. When the United States was a new nation, the river literally marked the western frontier: beyond it, all was unclaimed land -- Indian territory. The Cuyahoga was the place where "civilization" ended; but civilization had it in for the river. By 1870, the river was on a frontier of a different kind: the industrial frontier. For on the river's banks sprouted the country's pride and joy -- a burgeoning, spouting multitude of factories, a booming display of what was called progress. But the river, as it flowed through Cleveland, became a foul-smelling channel of sludge, with an oily surface that ignited with such regularity that river fires were treated as commonplace events by the local press.
But then, in 1969, the river burned again, just as a third kind of frontier swept across the nation: an environmental frontier. And the Cuyahoga River became a landmark on this frontier too -- a poster child for those trying to undo the destruction wrought by progress in America.
The Return of the Cuyahoga is a one-hour documentary about the death and rebirth of one of America's most emblematic waterways. In its history we see the end of the American frontier, the growth of industry, the scourge of pollution and the advent of a political movement that sought to end pollution.
The Cuyahoga's story is a particularly apt example for future environmental efforts, because the river can't just be "set aside" as a pristine wilderness park - it runs right through Cleveland, after all. Like most American rivers, the Cuyahoga has to serve widely varying needs - aesthetic and economic, practical and natural, human and animal. The challenge sounds impossible: how to maintain industrial uses of the river near Lake Erie, encourage recreation and entertainment, and yet preserve the nature in and around the river. Impossible challenge - yet it's the same that much of our riparian nation is facing today.

This last fire (6-22-1969) on Cuyahoga River lasted just thirty minutes, but it did approximately $50,000 in damage -- principally to some railroad bridges spanning the river. It is unclear what caused the fire. Prior fires occurred on river in 1868, 1883, 1887, 1912, 1922, 1936, 1941, 1948, and in 1952. The 1952 fire caused over $1.5 million in damage. Having the river on fire for my high school graduation in June 1969 seemed fitting and not surpising. My father, the general counsel of a chemical company, fretted several years earlier when a company plant discharge had completely blocked the flow of the Cuyahoga with its gypsum (Calcium Suflate) content, but it happened during a weeked and a bulldozer opened a channel through it be government agencies reopened the next Monday.
I grew up read 1899 Rivers and Harbors Act case law as a result of my father's work. Through that law the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was sole regulator of water pollution before the Clean Water Act (CWA) of 1972 established the U.S. EPA.
In 1972, while doing a class project with Bob Baker at The State University, we did an interview with the Ohio Department of Health in Columbus and had to provide them with a copy of the CWA since I had it from my father before they had gotten it.
My childhood (1956-1969) was on the Lake Erie shoreline at the end of E. 194th St in Euclid -- eastside of Cleveland -- see: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en≷=us&ie;=UTF8&t;=h≪=41.601132,-81.547173&spn;=0.000399,0.0012&z;=20 Used tampoons and rubbers floated in an algae/oily scrum on most days. We would splash a path through its 20-30 foot width to get into the still dirty greenish water. The rocky bottom -- mostly wave-smooth paving bricks and concrete chucks from fills extending into the lake -- were slickly coated in aglae. A sunken oil barge five miles off shore added odor and stickiness too.
My grandparents from SE Ohio when visiting us would bring jugs of water to use as they won't even shower at our house due to the "dead fish" smell of the tap water because of the blue-green algae blooms in the Lake. In fact, our shawering made them run from the house.
In the 1950s, me and my two sisters would see who could hold their breaths the longest as our family drove U.S. 21 to the south out of Cleveland through the flats. We also kept our eyes closed to avoid the burning feeling from the air.
As a result, I became an environmental regulator for two decades after college then a USGS scientist.

Randall Stuart "Randy" Newman (born November 28, 1943) is an American singer-songwriter,arranger, composer, and pianist who is known for his mordant (and often satirical) pop songs and for film scores.
Newman often writes lyrics from the perspective of a character far removed from his own experiences, sometimes using the point of view of an unreliable narrator. For example, the 1972 song "Sail Away" is written as a slave trader's sales pitch to attract slaves, while the narrator of "Political Science" is a U.S. nationalist who complains of worldwide ingratitude toward America and proposes a brutally ironic final solution. One of his biggest hits, "Short People" was written from the perspective of "a lunatic" who hates short people. Since the 1980s, Newman has worked mostly as a film composer. In 1972, while doing a class project with Bob Baker at The State University, we did an interview with the Ohio Department of Health in Columbus and had to provide them with a copy of the CWA since I had it from my father before they had gotten it. My childhood (1956-1969) was on the Lake Erie shoreline at the end of E. 194th St in Euclid -- eastside of Cleveland -- see: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en≷=us&ie;=UTF8&t;=h≪=41.601132,-81.547173&spn;=0.000399,0.0012&z;=20 Used tampoons and rubbers floated in an algae/oily scrum on most days. We would splash a path through its 20-30 foot width to get into the still dirty greenish water. The rocky bottom -- mostly wave-smooth paving bricks and concrete chucks from fills extending into the lake -- were slickly coated in aglae. A sunken oil barge five miles off shore added odor and stickiness too. My grandparents from SE Ohio when visiting us would bring jugs of water to use as they won't even shower at our house due to the "dead fish" smell of the tap water because of the blue-green algae blooms in the Lake. In fact, our shawering made them run from the house. In the 1950s, me and my two sisters would see who could hold their breaths the longest as our family drove U.S. 21 to the south out of Cleveland through the flats. We also kept our eyes closed to avoid the burning feeling from the air. This last fire (6-22-1969) on Cuyahoga River lasted just thirty minutes, but it did approximately $50,000 in damage -- principally to some railroad bridges spanning the river. It then flows through Independence,Valley View, Cuyahoga Heights, Newburgh Heights and Cleveland to its northern terminus, emptying into Lake Erie. The Cuyahoga River and its tributaries drain 813 square miles (2,110 km2) of land in portions of six counties.
The river is a relatively recent geological formation, formed by the advance and retreat of ice sheets during the last ice age. The finalglacial retreat, which occurred 10,000--12,000 years ago, caused changes in the drainage pattern near Akron. This change in pattern caused the originally southward-flowing Cuyahoga to flow to the north. As its newly reversed currents flowed toward Lake Erie, the river carved its way around glacial debris left by the receding ice sheet, resulting in the river's winding U-shape. These meanderings stretched the length of the river (which was only 30 miles (50 km) when travelled directly) into a 100-mile (160 km) trek from its headwaters to its mouth. The depth of the river (except where noted below) ranges from 3 to 6 ft (1 to 2 m).

The Cuyahoga watershed begins its 100-mile (160 km) journey in Hambden, Ohio, flowing southward to the confluence of the East Branch Cuyahoga River and West Branch Cuyahoga River in Burton, where the Cuyahoga River officially begins.[1] It continues on its 84.9 miles (136.6 km) journey flowing southward to Cuyahoga Falls, where it turns sharply north and flows through theCuyahoga Valley National Park in northern Summit County and southern Cuyahoga County. It then flows through Independence,Valley View, Cuyahoga Heights, Newburgh Heights and Cleveland to its northern terminus, emptying into Lake Erie. The Cuyahoga River and its tributaries drain 813 square miles (2,110 km2) of land in portions of six counties.
The river is a relatively recent geological formation, formed by the advance and retreat of ice sheets during the last ice age. The finalglacial retreat, which occurred 10,000--12,000 years ago, caused changes in the drainage pattern near Akron. This change in pattern caused the originally southward-flowing Cuyahoga to flow to the north. As its newly reversed currents flowed toward Lake Erie, the river carved its way around glacial debris left by the receding ice sheet, resulting in the river's winding U-shape. These meanderings stretched the length of the river (which was only 30 miles (50 km) when travelled directly) into a 100-mile (160 km) trek from its headwaters to its mouth. The depth of the river (except where noted below) ranges from 3 to 6 ft (1 to 2 m).

For centuries, the Cuyahoga River has been on the frontier. When the United States was a new nation, the river literally marked the western frontier: beyond it, all was unclaimed land -- Indian territory. The Cuyahoga was the place where "civilization" ended; but civilization had it in for the river. By 1870, the river was on a frontier of a different kind: the industrial frontier. For on the river's banks sprouted the country's pride and joy -- a burgeoning, spouting multitude of factories, a booming display of what was called progress. But the river, as it flowed through Cleveland, became a foul-smelling channel of sludge, with an oily surface that ignited with such regularity that river fires were treated as commonplace events by the local press.
But then, in 1969, the river burned again, just as a third kind of frontier swept across the nation: an environmental frontier. And the Cuyahoga River became a landmark on this frontier too -- a poster child for those trying to undo the destruction wrought by progress in America.
The Return of the Cuyahoga is a one-hour documentary about the death and rebirth of one of America's most emblematic waterways. In its history we see the end of the American frontier, the growth of industry, the scourge of pollution and the advent of a political movement that sought to end pollution.
The Cuyahoga's story is a particularly apt example for future environmental efforts, because the river can't just be "set aside" as a pristine wilderness park - it runs right through Cleveland, after all. Like most American rivers, the Cuyahoga has to serve widely varying needs - aesthetic and economic, practical and natural, human and animal. The challenge sounds impossible: how to maintain industrial uses of the river near Lake Erie, encourage recreation and entertainment, and yet preserve the nature in and around the river. Impossible challenge - yet it's the same that much of our riparian nation is facing today.

It is unclear what caused the fire. Prior fires occurred on river in 1868, 1883, 1887, 1912, 1922, 1936, 1941, 1948, and in 1952. The 1952 fire caused over $1.5 million in damage. Having the river on fire for my high school graduation in June 1969 seemed fitting and not surpising. My father, the general counsel of a chemical company, fretted several years earlier when a company plant discharge had completely blocked the flow of the Cuyahoga with its gypsum (Calcium Suflate) content, but it happened during a weeked and a bulldozer opened a channel through it be government agencies reopened the next Monday.
I grew up read 1899 Rivers and Harbors Act case law as a result of my father's work. Through that law the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was sole regulator of water pollution before the Clean Water Act (CWA) of 1972 established the U.S. EPA.
In 1972, while doing a class project with Bob Baker at The State University, we did an interview with the Ohio Department of Health in Columbus and had to provide them with a copy of the CWA since I had it from my father before they had gotten it.
My childhood (1956-1969) was on the Lake Erie shoreline at the end of E. 194th St in Euclid -- eastside of Cleveland -- see: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en≷=us&ie;=UTF8&t;=h≪=41.601132,-81.547173&spn;=0.000399,0.0012&z;=20 Used tampoons and rubbers floated in an algae/oily scrum on most days. We would splash a path through its 20-30 foot width to get into the still dirty greenish water. The rocky bottom -- mostly wave-smooth paving bricks and concrete chucks from fills extending into the lake -- were slickly coated in aglae. A sunken oil barge five miles off shore added odor and stickiness too.
My grandparents from SE Ohio when visiting us would bring jugs of water to use as they won't even shower at our house due to the "dead fish" smell of the tap water because of the blue-green algae blooms in the Lake. In fact, our shawering made them run from the house.
In the 1950s, me and my two sisters would see who could hold their breaths the longest as our family drove U.S. 21 to the south out of Cleveland through the flats. We also kept our eyes closed to avoid the burning feeling from the air.
As a result, I became an environmental regulator for two decades after college then a USGS scientist.

On June 22, 1969, oil and garbage in the Cuyahoga River caught fire in Cleveland, Ohio. This fire drew national attention to environmental problems, Ohio and in other places across the United States.
The Cuyahoga River fire lasted just thirty minutes,
but it did approximately fifty thousand dollars in damage
to some railroad bridges and some buildings near the river.
No one knows what exactly caused the fire,
some say the river just started to burn by itself,
but most people believe that sparks from a passing train
fell into the oil slick on the Cuyahoga River.
The flames became very high!
Almost 5 stories tall before fireboats
Almost 5 stories tall before fireboats
arrived and got the blaze under control.
This was not the first time that the river had caught fire.
Fires occurred on the Cuyahoga River many times before.
The 1952 fire was the biggest,
it caused over 1.5 million dollars in damage..
to boats and an office building near the river.
On August 1, 1969, Time magazine reported on the fire
and on the condition of the Cuyahoga River.
Chocolate-brown, oily, bubbling with subsurface gases.
It oozes rather than flows.
"Anyone who falls into the Cuyahoga does not drown,"
He decays

not even low forms
such as leeches and sludge worms that usually thrive on wastes
It is also -- literally -- a fire hazard...
Because of this fire, Cleveland businesses
became "famous" for their pollution

Cleveland was a center for manufacturing in the USA.
And at that time there were no laws to protect the environment.
So, even following World War II,
Cleveland businesses, (especially steel mills) routinely polluted the river,
They used it like a garbage dump for chemicals and used oil.
At that time there were no laws to protect the environment.
Cleveland, and its residents became
the source of jokes across the United States.
The fire also brought attention to other
serious environmental problems all across the country.
In 1972 the Clean Water Act was made a law.
Unfortunately, even today the river is still polluted..
mostly by trash from nearby houses,
oil, and gasoline (washed into the river by rain) and sewer water.
The good thing is the water quality has really improved!
Before, there were no fish living in the river
but a recent study found 44 different kinds of fish.
So, today the water is much much cleaner!

But now the water's turned to ink no matter where we row
Our river it was clean and clear, we'd swim there everyday
Now it's far too dangerous, a fence keeps us away
The sun upon the water shone sparkling and royal
But now we see a rainbow from reflections in the oil
Late last Friday I drove home, smelled fire in the air
Couldn't tell the origin, the smoke was everywhere
A sheet of flame rose through the clouds, it cut them like a knife
I saw the river up in flame and giving up it's life
Now the ashes settle on a charred and cindered lake
Staying by this shoreline is a terrible mistake
But the Cuyahoga's seen me grow, and now I've seen it die
Figure I'll stay by it, though I cannot tell you why
