Day Odyssey Series: National Pike and Pennsylvania Turnpike
A drive from
Baltimore MD up two of the
USA's most historic routes of all time!
Incredible scenery! Historic locations! A cool connecting road!
Traffic backups! NOT to be missed!!
As usual, we begin in the
Baltimore area ('cause that's where I live), heading out roads that were designated the
National Pike before the coming of
the rerouted and all its guises (
Balto Nat'l
Pike etc).
Starting out in
Catonsville MD, we head west on what's now
MD 144/
Frederick Road (much of the original Pike is now MD 144).
Along the way we pass through
Ellicott City,
Mount Airy,
New Market,
Frederick, Meyersville,
Hagerstown,
Clear Spring, Hancock and Flintstone before arriving in
Cumberland. We make stops at historic
Wilson Bridge,
Little Pool on the
C&O; Canal, and the
Town Hill Overlook.
I try to keep on the original route as much as possible, but subsequent realignments and such force us to occasionally use the modern route (rats!!). The coming of
I-70 made that hard enough, complicated further by the coming of
I-68 (originally
US 48).
In Cumberland we stop for a look around, including a look inside the
1905 Western Maryland Railway station. It now looks great, but I miss the way it looked before all the "improvements."
Wait-there's more! We then continue west on the Pike, again making an effort to keep on the original route. We'll pass through
Frostburg before ascending into
Garrett County, Maryland's great northwest.
Bits and pieces of the original Pike stray off, but most either dead-end or became private property.
When we arrive at
US 219 we head north to our connection with the
Pennsylvania Turnpike. Along the way we make a stop at
Meyersdale PA to check out another remaining
B&O; RR station. The
Amtrak Capitol Limited passes it
...but doesn't stop!! For a few miles out of town
CSX (and the Cap Lim route) parallel us.
We soon arrive in Somerset-and at our connection with the
PA Turnpike (or Penna Tpk, as all the signs say). I chose this route as it allows us to pass through the four remaining tunnels on the turnpike. It cost us $14.95 to use this route, so PLEASE watch to make my expenditure worthwhile!
It didn't take long to hit a Sunday backup, but fortunately it ended at
Breezewood for good (btw, remember Breezewood from a couple of my past vids?). I did the best I could capturing the tunnels, but in some spots keeping in focus became a challenge.
We exit at
I-83 south, a roure seen in some previous
Odyssey videos (
Jim Thorpe,
Horseshoe Curve,
Centralia and the
Woodstock site-watch 'em if you ain't done so yet). And, as usual, a backup awaited us. This time, a
TOTAL stop for about 45 mins!! I-83 became a parking lot!!
Don't worry; I don't show the whole thing here.
We're finally back in 'da hood' after a 400+ mile journey, but one of our more interesting ones! And the first Odyssey video done in full 1080p hi-def.
Possible future Odyssey destinations include the
Grand Canyon...of
Pennsylvania, that is! Also
US 301/
I-64 to the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (will take us thru
Frog Level VA-as seen in my YT #
100 vid),
US 29 to central
Virginia (including
VA 42),
Long Island NY (
Jones Beach) and others too. Got a reasonable idea for an odyssey?
Tell me! NO-traveling to the
MARC station at
Martin Airport is NOT considered an odyssey! But
I'll still meet you there if I can one day...
Opening/closing music: "
Puffin' Billy," but you probably know it as something else from your kid days...
P.S. The Day Odyssey vids (and others as well) will soon be available on blu-ray! My recent acquisittion of a blu-ray burner makes this possible. Now to get a cable for my printer so I can make labels and jackets! Ain't got a blu-ray player? They'll be available on regular
DVD too!

This is a video every
Black person should watch and be cautious of when traveling at night through
Sundown Towns. Keep your protection on you and don't be afraid to use it.
Baton Rouge native
Keith Beauchamp hosts
Investigation Discovery's series "The
Injustice Files"
Beauchamp (
2005's "
The Untold Story of
Emmett Louis Till") visits several places during the hour to find out if sundown towns -- where blacks were excluded from public life after dark -- still exist. Such towns were once so widespread they were cataloged in the 1936 "
Negro Motorist Green-Book." He explains in the episode that sundown towns were largely a northern phenomenon, designed to encourage black domestic workers to leave town when their workdays ended.
Beauchamp's road trip took him to towns in
Indiana,
Illinois and
Ohio, and his discomfort in those places is palpable on-screen.
"You really don't know until you get there," Beauchamp said during a recent phone interview from his
Brooklyn base. "
And I tell you, out of the many towns that we traveled to on this road trip
... I have never felt so alienated in my life. I have never witnessed anything like it, where people felt it was natural to live that way, without diversity.
"My objective was to prove these places do not exist -- cannot exist -- in this country, right?"
In fact, Beauchamp said he was often so uncomfortable that he wouldn't eat lunch with his crew.
"I just couldn't do it," he said. "I had an all-white crew. I was the only African-American in the crew. I found myself sitting in the
SUV while my crew went in to eat, because I felt it was just so unnatural.
It's unnatural for me to look at fast-food restaurants and not see African-Americans around -- not just African-Americans but people of color in general. It's unnatural for me to walk in
Walmart and not see an African-American around. It was mind-blowing for me to experience this. I don't think people really realize these places actually exist.
"To be there and ask the questions and hear the responses was an awakening for me. And it scared me."
