Victoria Dam and hydroelectric station
Victoria Dam and hydroelectric station, a small 12.4-Megawatt hydro station (two 6.2-MW units), were built in 1931 by the Copper Range Mining Company. The Dam and hydroelectric station are currently operated by Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO), which are remotely controlled from UPPCO's dispatch center. In the fall of 1929, just before the great stock market crash, work began on the Victoria hydroelectric development. In January 1931, the facility was placed in commercial operation to provide electricity for the area's copper mining and forest products industries. Today's Victoria is the third dam on this stretch of the Ontonagon River. In 1902, Hooper's Dam was built just upstream in what is now the reservoir. It diverted water to the Taylor air compressor to produce energy for the Victoria Mining Company. In 1903, the original Victoria Dam, a concrete multiple-arch buttress-style structure, was built at the falls. In 1991, it was replaced by the existing roller-compacted-concrete gravity stepped-face dam. There have also been three pipelines at Victoria. The original 1930 red-wood pipeline was replaced in 1959 with one of Douglas Fir. An actual section of the Douglas fir pipeline was saved and is on display at the Dam. For over 40 years, the waters of the south and west branches of the Ontonagon River flowed through this cylinder of wood on their way to Lake Superior. In 2001, the present spiral-welded steel pipeline was built to replace the wooden structure, which ...

Ontonagon.m4v
Ontonagon, Michigan, in 1990. The video quality isn't great because it's a copy of a copy of a copy of a VHS tape. If I remember right, Maggie Morgan drove my Opel Manta, while I sat on the passenger side window with the big clunky videocamera bouncing off my shoulder. But considering the bridge at the very beginning doesn't even exist anymore, I thought it might appeal to some nostalgic people out there. The last time I was there was in 2007, and it sure looked different then! I almost drove my fiancé and I into the river, because we were getting there late at night and I didn't know the bridge had been removed. :)

Tom Running Mex-i-min-e Falls (Explicit Language)
Here's Tom running the above stated rapid on the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It's rated Class III/IV, so we'll shoot the middle and give it a III+. It's basically a series of 4 drops, with drop 2 having a pretty sticky hole you have to punch/boof as it will stern squirt a Dagger Mamba 8.0 (such as mine).

Kayaking - Year in Review
The adventures of Tom and Scott go far and wide this year: 19 different rivers (that doesn't include sections of rivers) in 7 different states. Our significant others must really love us! This year had an upgrade to both our difficulty of river (Class III) and equipment (our fleets are full-on whitewater). Needless to say, we had a lot of fun on the water and are looking forward to a fun 2012!

Bond Falls (Michigan) -- 2
Bond Falls is one of those "best kept secret" spots on the Western Upper Peninsula that you want to make sure you do not miss. This beautiful water fall is located on the middle branch of the Ontonagon River near Paulding. Although it does not get the "press" of more famous UP water falls, Bond Falls has a large following of admirers and had even been part of a calendar listing the most scenic natural places in the world! 8/15/08

Kayaking in Seney National Wildlife Refuge on the Manistique River
My husband and I took a relaxing kayak trip down the Manistique River through the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We had a glorious afternoon on the peaceful, rustic waters, enjoying the high water level and currents due to the recent rain storms. We would often just float down the river listening quietly to the sounds of the nature around us and watch to see if we could spot any wildlife along the river . We did spy a Doe sitting in the tall grasses by the shore, a hawk, a turtle sunning itself on a log, and a group of mallard ducks lined up on another log. We were watching out for larger wildlife too, like bears, but thankfully didn't see any. We realized when we reached the end boat landing why we probably didn't see much wildlife... a group of three canoes with children was approx. 20 minutes ahead of us waiting for their pick-up ride. It was such a wonderful day, I wanted to share it with everyone. I'm amazed how well the video came out, considering it came from my Canon Powershot A630 camera, and not a camcorder. I had the misfortune of losing one of my camera batteries while switching my SD cards, otherwise I would have had more video for sure to share. The music is "With All My Heart" (trad. melody arranged by Rob & Amber Whitlock)) from the CD "Celtic Myst" by Northwoods Press, Inc. Enjoy!

Lake of the Clouds
Lake of the Clouds is a lake located in Ontonagon County in the Upper Peninsula of the US state of Michigan, within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The lake is situated in a valley between two ridges in the Porcupine Mountains. Surrounded by virgin wilderness and stunning vistas, the lake is a popular destination for hikers, campers, and fishermen. The state park will occasionally host a nighttime sky watch. While lying down you can watch for shooting stars and orbiting satellites while a guide points out the constellations and stars. The lake is fed from the east end by the Carp River Inlet and the outflow from the western end is the Carp River, which empties into Lake Superior on the boundary between Ontonagon and Gogebic County.
