The United States has ten protected areas known as national seashores and four known as national lakeshores, which are operated by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior. National seashores and lakeshores must be established by an act of the United States Congress. National seashores and lakeshores are coastal areas federally designated as being of natural and recreational significance as a preserved area. The first national seashore, Cape Hatteras, was established in 1953, and the first national lakeshore, Pictured Rocks, was established in 1966. The newest national lakeshore or seashore is Canaveral, established in 1975. All of the national lakeshores are on Lakes Michigan and Superior, and nine of the ten national seashores are on the Atlantic Ocean, including two on the Gulf of Mexico.
National seashores are located in ten states and national lakeshores are in three other states. Florida, North Carolina, and Michigan each have two. Point Reyes is the only national seashore on the Pacific coast. The largest national seashore or lakeshore is Gulf Islands, at over 137,000 acres (550 km2); the smallest is Indiana Dunes, at 15,000 acres (61 km2). The total areas protected by national seashores and lakeshores are approximately 595,000 acres (2,410 km2) and 229,000 acres (930 km2), respectively.
Padre Island is the largest of the Texas barrier islands and is the world's longest barrier island. It is part of the U.S. state of Texas. The island is located along Texas' southern coast of the Gulf of Mexico and is noted for its white sandy beaches at the south end. Meaning father in Spanish, it was named after Father José Nicolás Ballí (c.1770-1829), who owned the island and served as a missionary priest and collector of finances for all the churches in the Rio Grande Valley. He also founded the first mission in present-day Cameron County.
Padre Island is the second-largest island by area in the contiguous United States, after Long Island in New York on the Atlantic Coast. It is about 113 miles (182 km) longand 1.8 miles (3 km) wide, stretching from the city of Corpus Christi, in the north, to the resort community of South Padre Island in the south. The island is oriented north-south, bordered by the Gulf of Mexico on the east, and Laguna Madre on the west. The island's northern end connects to Mustang Island by roadway. The southern end of the island is separated from Brazos Island by the Brazos Santiago Pass.
Padre Island National Seashore (PAIS) is a national seashore located on Padre Island off the coast of South Texas. In contrast to South Padre Island, known for its beaches and vacationing college students, PAIS is located on North Padre Island and consists of a long beach where nature is preserved.
Most of the park is primitive, but camping is available, and most of the beach is only accessible to four-wheel-drive vehicles. All but four miles is open to vehicle traffic. PAIS is the fourth designated national seashore in the United States.
North Padre Island is the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. The national seashore is 70 miles (110 km) long with 65.5 miles (105.4 km) of Gulf beach. PAIS hosts a variety of pristine beach, dune, and tidal flat environments, including the Laguna Madre on its west coast, a famous spot for windsurfing. It is located in parts of Kleberg, Kenedy, and Willacy counties, with Kenedy County having the majority of its land area.
Point Reyes is a prominent cape and popular Northern California tourist destination on the Pacific coast of northern California. It is located in Marin County approximately 30 miles (50 km) west-northwest of San Francisco. The term is often applied to the Point Reyes Peninsula, the region bounded by Tomales Bay on the northeast and Bolinas Lagoon on the southeast. The headland is protected as part of Point Reyes National Seashore.
The cape protects Drakes Bay on its southern side. The headland is largely drained by Drakes Estero. Drakes Bay and Drake's Estero are named after English seafarer Sir Francis Drake who possibly hauled his ship, the Golden Hinde, up onto the beach for repairs in June 1579. Inverness Ridge runs along the peninsula's northwest-southeast spine, with forested peaks around 430 meters (1,400 ft). West of the ridge, the land flattens out and the vegetation turns to scrub. The Mount Vision fire in 1995 burned part of Inverness Ridge.
Point Reyes lends its name to the town of Point Reyes Station, California.
Cape Cod is a geographic cape/island and independent land mass separated from the mainland by the Cape Cod Canal that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean in the easternmost part of the state of Massachusetts in the Northeastern United States. Its historic, maritime character and ample beaches attract heavy tourism during the summer months.
Cape Cod stretches from Provincetown in the northeast to Woods Hole in the southwest. Cape Cod, as defined by the Cape Cod Commission's enabling legislation, comprises Barnstable County. The Cape Cod Canal cuts 17.5 miles (28.2 km) roughly across the base of the peninsula, though the western boundary of the cape extends to include small portions of the towns of Bourne and Sandwich which lie on the mainland side of the canal.
Two road bridges cross the Cape Cod Canal: the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne Bridge. In addition, the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge carries railway freight and limited passenger services onto the Cape. Cape territory is divided into fifteen towns with many villages.
Point Reyes lies about an hour north of San Francisco on the San Andreas fault at the base of the peninsula that makes up the Point Reyes National Seashore. This beautiful area has great beaches, cliffs, wildlife and barren coastal landscapes that are stunning. Since ancient times, this barrier island has provided sanctuary to both people and wildlife. Many threatened animals find refuge here, including sea turtles who nest on its shores. Like Indians and early settlers, you too can find tranquility. Swim in the ocean. Fish in the lagoon. Stroll down a wooded trail. Or reflect on the longest expanse of pristine shore in Florida - the way it used to be.
Story I shot with Karyn Greer at Cumberland Island which is Georgia's largest and southernmost barrier island. Pristine maritime forests, undeveloped beaches and wide marshes plus the Island's rich and diverse history make for a great trip and video.
Went fishing at Padre Island Seashore. The water was clear but the swells were huge which was kinda weird. Wish we could've landed the mystery fish.
Spend a beautiful sunny day hiking along ocean cliffs, eventually reaching Tamales Point at the tip of Point Reyes.

In 1981 the Orleans Historical Society restored the USCG gold medal boat CG36500 to seaworthy condition after it had been abandoned in the woods of the Cape Cod National Seashore for several years. Ongoing annual maintenance by the OHS volunteers kept her afloat, and then in 2009, under the leadership of Peter B. Kennedy, a comprehensive restoration was performed. The boat continues to be maintained today by the OHS under the direction of the current Coxswain, Richard Ryder. Restoration was supported by the Fred J. Brotherton Charitable Foundation, Orleans Community Preservation Act and individual donors. Producer/editor Tamsen Martin-Cornell. Producer Tom Cronin.
Another early morning beach walk on powdery sugar white sand. We are on Santa Rosa Island in the Gulf Islands National Seashore at the Opal Beach day use area. Experience the beautiful crystal clear waters of the emerald green Gulf of Mexico and hear the sounds of the gentle waves as they caress the shore. Watch and listen as the shore birds, gulls and pelicans start their daily routines in this exquisite but sometime harsh environment. About halfway through our walk we encounter a great blue heron patrolling the beach. As we approach, the heron is first curious, then annoyed, taking flight to another stretch of beach. Continuing our westward walk we are drawn back to the soothing sounds and stunning seascape views of this little piece of our island paradise. I think you will enjo...
