Michigan i/ˈmɪʃᵻɡən/ is a state located in the Great Lakes and midwestern regions of the United States. The name Michigan is the French form of the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning "large water" or "large lake". Michigan is the tenth most populous of the 50 United States, with the 11th most extensive total area (the largest state by total area east of the Mississippi River). Its capital is Lansing, and the largest city is Detroit.
Michigan is the only state to consist of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula, to which the name Michigan was originally applied, is often noted to be shaped like a mitten. The Upper Peninsula (often referred to as "the U.P.") is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, a five-mile (8 km) channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The two peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge. The state has the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world, being bounded by four of the five Great Lakes, plus Lake Saint Clair. As a result, it is one of the leading U.S. states for recreational boating. Michigan also has 64,980 inland lakes and ponds. A person in the state is never more than six miles (9.7 km) from a natural water source or more than 85 miles (137 km) from a Great Lakes shoreline.

Despite recent rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court and Michigan courts declaring that sentencing children to mandatory life without parole is unconstitutional, 360 people still sit in Michigan prisons for crimes they committed when they were too young to drive, vote, or graduate high school. The reason? Michigan's harsh, outdated laws need to be amended to allow judges to determine appropriate punishments on a case-by-case basis and to guarantee a fair opportunity for parole for young people serving these unforgiving sentences. That's why we're urgently calling on legislators to push for reforms that will allow Michigan to join the global consensus that children cannot be held to the same standards of responsibility as adults.

A 13-year-old boy is in custody after leading deputies on a wild police chase through Clinton Township with his 8-year-old sister as the passenger, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office. We're told deputies tried to pull over a black Nissan Altima after reports of erratic driving on Metropolitan Parkway near Harper on Saturday around 11:30 p.m. The driver of the Nissan apparently stopped on the road shoulder, but before the deputy could approach, he took off at a high-rate of speed. We're told deputies were unaware of the occupants' ages. After a short pursuit, the 13-year-old lost control, crossed a grassy median and ended up in the eastbound lanes of Metropolitan Parkway where they tried to flee on foot. The driver and his sister were eventually caught. The girl, deputie...

2015 JDAI Inter-site Conference For the past two decades, JDAI has focused not merely on safely reducing the use of secure detention, but also on doing so in a way that is equitable, particularly with respect to race, ethnicity, and ancestry. Since the last inter-site conference, events in JDAI communities in Missouri, Ohio, Maryland and elsewhere have captured the nation’s attention, bringing issues of race and justice into living rooms across the country. And yet the images on TV can often reduce the challenges of today’s justice system as black and white, even as Latinos represent the fastest growing minority population, not only in the Southwest, but in all other regions as well. At JDAI we know there is a more inclusive narrative that steers us toward equity. This plenary will exami...

http://fosteringsuccessmichigan.com/library/fsm-1 Michigan currently has over 14,000 children in foster care. National outcomes reveal that there are: twice as many grade repeats and school transitions as non-foster youth, lower standardized test scores, and high rates of disciplinary action and suspensions. And what is most shocking is that half of all children in foster care drop out of school before graduating high school (yes, I said HALF!). This webinar will provide guidance to middle school and high school counselors regarding what they legally must know about their population of children in care and what educationally focused interventions have been proven to be effective with youth in foster care. We will specifically discuss school records, special education, classroom support,...
