Despite recent rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court and Michigan courts declaring that sentencing children to mandatory life without parole is unconstitutional, 360 people still sit in Michigan prisons for crimes they committed when they were too young to drive, vote, or graduate high school.
The reason? Michigan's harsh, outdated laws need to be amended to allow judges to determine appropriate punishments on a case-by-case basis and to guarantee a fair opportunity for parole for young people serving these unforgiving sentences.
That's why we're urgently calling on legislators to push for reforms that will allow Michigan to join the global consensus that children cannot be held to the same standards of responsibility as adults.

Michigan
Michigan 
i/ˈmɪʃᵻɡən/ is a state located in the Great Lakes and midwestern regions of the United States. The name Michigan is the French form of the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning "large water" or "large lake". Michigan is the tenth most populous of the 50 United States, with the 11th most extensive total area (the largest state by total area east of the Mississippi River). Its capital is Lansing, and the largest city is Detroit.
Michigan is the only state to consist of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula, to which the name Michigan was originally applied, is often noted to be shaped like a mitten. The Upper Peninsula (often referred to as "the U.P.") is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, a five-mile (8 km) channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The two peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge. The state has the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world, being bounded by four of the five Great Lakes, plus Lake Saint Clair. As a result, it is one of the leading U.S. states for recreational boating. Michigan also has 64,980 inland lakes and ponds. A person in the state is never more than six miles (9.7 km) from a natural water source or more than 85 miles (137 km) from a Great Lakes shoreline.

Michigan is the only state to consist entirely of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula, to which the name Michigan was originally applied, is often noted to be shaped like a mitten. The Upper Peninsula (often referred to as "The U.P.") is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, a five-mile (8 km)-wide channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The Upper Peninsula is economically important for tourism and natural resources.

We will also briefly discuss guiding principles for educating foster youth in juvenile justice secure care settings.
Elizabeth Bowker, JD, LLM, is a licensed attorney in the State of Michigan. She currently works at the Student Advocacy Center of Michigan as a educational advocate for DHHS involved youth. Michigan currently has over 14,000 children in foster care.
National outcomes reveal that there are: twice as many grade repeats and school transitions as non-foster youth, lower standardized test scores, and high rates of disciplinary action and suspensions. And what is most shocking is that half of all children in foster care drop out of school before graduating high school (yes, I said HALF!).
This webinar will provide guidance to middle school and high school counselors regarding what they legally must know about their population of children in care and what educationally focused interventions have been proven to be effective with youth in foster care. We will specifically discuss school records, special education, classroom support, school discipline and supportive adult roles. We will also briefly discuss guiding principles for educating foster youth in juvenile justice secure care settings.
Elizabeth Bowker, JD, LLM, is a licensed attorney in the State of Michigan. She currently works at the Student Advocacy Center of Michigan as a educational advocate for DHHS involved youth.
