General Motors internal political presentation "Story of Progress", from 1980. Features GM's president E.M. "Pete" Estes, F.W. Bowditch, and J. E. Colan urging GM employees to call their representatives and tell them the government needs to get out of the regulating business. Government interference requiring fuel economy improvements, emissions controls, and safety / passive restraints is just too expensive! GM will do just fine on their own. The auto shows hadn't gotten back into gear right after World War II. To fill the void and drum up excitement for its new cars and cars in general GM staged its own auto show at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. These eventually became known as the Motoramas. In 1950, radio and TV personality, Arthur Godfrey, hosted a tour of the displays of new Chevrolets, Buicks, Cadillacs and his sponsor's, Pontiacs. Along the way he bumped into GM President, Charles Erwin Wilson, or C. E. Wilson who would soon be tapped by Eisenhower to become Secretary of Defense. He also talked to the legendary auto pioneer Charles "Boss" Kettering who had invented the electric self starter for GM. The device, along with cheap oil, sealed the fate of the electric car.

But Tom Morris has plenty of philosophical street credibility: after getting his Ph.d. from Yale, he taught for 15 years at the University of Notre Dame (where stunts like bringing the Nd marching band to class for an impromptu "pep rally" before a big test made him one of the most popular professors on campus). And Morris isn't dumbing down his message for the corporate culture. Rather, he's genuinely interested in fostering a workplace environment where one can seriously think about truth, beauty, goodness, and unity. "if we let the great philosophers guide our thinking," he says, "and if we then begin to become philosophers ourse...
