Part one of a documentary travel film presented by Talk About A Good Time about the world-renowned Art Institute of Chicago, located in Chicago, Illinois.
Located at the end of South Michigan Avenue, at one million square feet, it is the second largest art museum in the U.S., surpassed only by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Its collection encompasses more than 5,000 years of human expression from cultures around the world and contains more than 260,000 works of art.
In this installment, after seeing some of the public art in Chicago, we learn about the Art Institute's Thorne miniature rooms, the Asian collection of ancient art, the special Modern and Contemporary Works on Paper exhibit, and the modern European collection, which includes both Impressionist and post-impressionist works.

According to John Hughes, the scene at the Art Institute of Chicago was "a self-indulgent scene of mine—which was a place of refuge for me, I went there quite a bit, I loved it. I knew all the paintings, the building. This was a chance for me to go back into this building and show the paintings that were my favorite." The museum had not been shot in, until the producers of the film approached them. "I remember Hughes saying, 'There are going to be more works of art in this movie than there have ever been before,'" recalled Jennifer Grey
"And then this picture (Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte), which I always thought this painting was sort of like making a movie," explained Hughes. A pointillist style, which at very very close to it, you don't have any idea what you've made until you step back from it. I used it in this context to see that he's (Cameron) looking at that little girl. Again, it's a mother and child. The closer he looks at the child, the less he sees. Of course, with this style of painting. Or any style of painting really. But the more he looks at, there's nothing there. I think he fears that the more you look at him the less you see. There isn't anything there. That's him." According to editor Paul Hirsch, in the original cut, the museum scene fared poorly at test screenings until he switched sequences around and Hughes changed the soundtrack.
"The piece of music I originally chose was a classical guitar solo played on acoustic guitar. It was nonmetrical with a lot of rubato. I cut the sequence to that music and it also became nonmetrical and irregular. I thought it was great and so did Hughes. He loved it so much that he showed it to the studio but they just went "Ehhh." Then after many screenings where the audience said "The museum scene is the scene we like least," he decided to replace the music. We had all loved it, but the audience hated it. I said, 'I think I know why they hate the museum scene. It's in the wrong place.' Originally, the parade sequence came before the museum sequence, but I realized that the parade was the highlight of the day, there was no way we could top it, so it had to be the last thing before the three kids go home. So that was agreed upon, we reshuffled the events of the day, and moved the museum sequence before the parade. Then we screened it and everybody loved the museum scene! My feeling was that they loved it because it came in at the right point in the sequence of events. John felt they loved it because of the music. Basically, the bottom line is, it worked."

Born in South Africa in 1930, Wendy Beckett received her dual vocations -- God and art -- early in life. The eldest of three children, Wendy had her childhood divided between Colinton, Scotland -- where the family relocated for several years while her father studied medicine -- and her native South Africa. It was there that Wendy's appreciation for art and religious devotion was nurtured by her school-teachers, the Sisters of Notre Dame.
Wendy would join this order herself in 1946, traveling to England to begin her novitiate. The order then sent Wendy to St. Anne's College in Oxford, where she studied English and graduated with highest honors. During this time, Wendy continued to live in the convent instead of the college, maintaining a strict rule of silence.
In 1954 Sister Wendy completed her teaching diploma in Liverpool and returned to South Africa to teach. She was eventually appointed a Reverend Mother, a position she held while also lecturing at the University of Witwatersrand.

West talked about his artistic process, accessibility to the arts, and artists’ responsibility to the truth. The following day, he received an honorary doctorate from SAIC during our Commencement Ceremony.

Art Institute of Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) is an encyclopedic art museum located in Chicago's Grant Park. It features a collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in its permanent collection. Its holdings also include American art, Old Masters, European and American decorative arts, Asian art, Islamic art, Ancient classical and Egyptian art, modern and contemporary art, and architecture and industrial and graphic design. In addition, it houses the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries.
Tracing its history to a free art school and gallery founded in 1866, the museum is located at 111 South Michigan Avenue in the Chicago Landmark Historic Michigan Boulevard District. It is associated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is overseen by Director and President Douglas Druick. It is one of the most visited art museums in the world with about 1.5 million visitors annually (2013), and with one million square feet in eight buildings, it is the second-largest art museum in the United States, after the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Chicago (

Kanye West
Kanye Omari West (/ˈkɑːnjeɪ/; born June 8, 1977) is an American recording artist, record producer, fashion designer and entrepreneur. He is the founder of the record label GOOD Music and creative content company DONDA. West is one of the most acclaimed musicians of the 21st century. He has attracted both praise and criticism for his work and his controversial, outspoken public persona.
Raised in Chicago, West first became known as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records in the early 2000s, producing hit singles for musical artists such as Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, before pursing a solo career as a rapper. In 2004, he released his debut album The College Dropout, to widespread commercial and critical success, and founded record label and management company GOOD Music. He went on to explore a variety of different musical styles on subsequent albums that included the baroque-inspired Late Registration (2005), the electronic-tinged Graduation (2007), and the starkly polarizing 808s & Heartbreak (2008). In 2010, he released his critically acclaimed fifth album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. He collaborated with Jay-Z on Watch the Throne (2011), and released his sixth album, Yeezus, to further critical praise in 2013. Following a series of recording delays and work on non-musical projects, West's seventh album, The Life of Pablo, was released in 2016.

West talked about his artistic process, accessibility to the arts, and artists’ responsibility to the truth. The following day, he received an honorary doctorate from SAIC during our Commencement Ceremony.

Its collection encompasses more than 5,000 years of human expression from cultures around the world and contains more than 260,000 works of art.
In this installment, after seeing some of the public art in Chicago, we learn about the Art Institute's Thorne miniature rooms, the Asian collection of ancient art, the special Modern and Contemporary Works on Paper exhibit, and the modern European collection, which includes both Impressionist and post-impressionist works.

According to John Hughes, the scene at the Art Institute of Chicago was "a self-indulgent scene of mine—which was a place of refuge for me, I went there quite a bit, I loved it. I knew all the paintings, the building. This was a chance for me to go back into this building and show the paintings that were my favorite." The museum had not been shot in, until the producers of the film approached them. "I remember Hughes saying, 'There are going to be more works of art in this movie than there have ever been before,'" recalled Jennifer Grey
"And then this picture (Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte), which I always thought this painting was sort of like making a movie," explained Hughes. A pointillist style, which at very very close to it, you don't have any idea what you've made until you step back from it. I used it in this context to see that he's (Cameron) looking at that little girl. Again, it's a mother and child. The closer he looks at the child, the less he sees. Of course, with this style of painting. Or any style of painting really. But the more he looks at, there's nothing there. I think he fears that the more you look at him the less you see. There isn't anything there. That's him." According to editor Paul Hirsch, in the original cut, the museum scene fared poorly at test screenings until he switched sequences around and Hughes changed the soundtrack.
"The piece of music I originally chose was a classical guitar solo played on acoustic guitar. It was nonmetrical with a lot of rubato. I cut the sequence to that music and it also became nonmetrical and irregular. I thought it was great and so did Hughes. He loved it so much that he showed it to the studio but they just went "Ehhh." Then after many screenings where the audience said "The museum scene is the scene we like least," he decided to replace the music. We had all loved it, but the audience hated it. I said, 'I think I know why they hate the museum scene. It's in the wrong place.' Originally, the parade sequence came before the museum sequence, but I realized that the parade was the highlight of the day, there was no way we could top it, so it had to be the last thing before the three kids go home. So that was agreed upon, we reshuffled the events of the day, and moved the museum sequence before the parade. Then we screened it and everybody loved the museum scene! My feeling was that they loved it because it came in at the right point in the sequence of events. John felt they loved it because of the music. Basically, the bottom line is, it worked."

You can't come to Chicago and not eat deep-dish pizza! During our week here we ate at many pizzerias in town including Lou Malnati's, Giordano's, Gino's East Side, and Pizzeria Uno. Formerly known as the Sears Tower, Willis Tower is now the 2nd tallest building in the United States. Many of the buildings at the University of Chicago were designed in the Gothic style.

Unsettling and provocative, Kara Walker's art takes hold. With room-size assemblages of black cut-paper silhouettes, eerie video animations, and a rich body of paintings, prints, and drawings—all circling around America's enduring conundrums of race, sex, and violence—Walker taps straight into our cultural subconscious, excavates our national history, and reflects it back to us with an array of complexities and contradictions.
Walker rocketed to fame at an early age. Barely out of art school, she scored a sensational success with 1994's Gone: An Historical Romance of a Civil War as It Occurred b'tween the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart—a work, now in the collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art, that drew on the 18th-century tradition of cut-paper silhouette to present caricatures of antebellum figures in violent and erotic scenarios. Proclaiming a new kind of history painting, Gone steered American art into a daring confrontation of our plantation era. Then, just three years later, when she was 28, she received a MacArthur Fellowship, one of the so-called genius grants. Ever since, she has been at the forefront of the international art world, challenging her audiences to continually, and imaginatively, reconsider America's history.
