On the Shoulders of Giants: Pharaoh Taharqa
Taharqa, as the second to last male Pharaoh of Egypt’s 25th Dynasty helped Egypt maintain its rich African culture for nearly 1,000 years. Taharqa built a plethora of temples in Cush, along with monuments at Karnak, Thebes, and Tanis. For at least eight of his twenty six year reign as Pharaoh, Taharqa fought off the oppression of the Assyrians, and promoted the beauty of the culture of his people.
On the Shoulders of Giants was created by Joseph A. Ward. Mr. Ward is a graduate of Florida A&M; University and holds his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. He possesses over six years of experience in delivering academic success presentations to grades K-12, college-aged students, and middle aged adults. By working in diverse venues such as grade schools, college campuses, juvenile divergent programs, correctional Institutions, religious communities, homeless shelters, and foster homes has become skilled at providing valuable life training to a wide variety of community members. In 750 B.C.E., Nubia conquered a fragmented Egypt and built the largest empire yet along the Nile.
Nubian kings, beginning with Piye, became the pharoahs of Egypt's 25th Dynasty. They sparked ancient Egypt's last great cultural renaissance, renovating temples and reviving earlier religious teachings. The 25th Dynasty came to an end around 660 B.C.E., when the Assyrians conquered Egypt and forced the Nubians south. There, they established an empire centered in the city of Meroe that flourished for 600 years."
Taharqa LATE KINGDOM 25th Dynasty (690-664) The Nubians fall under the Assyrians invasion. A renaissance in the arts of the 25th Dynasty shows a return to the Old Kingdom style. Taharqa was the brother of Shebitku and was the third king of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty. Shebitku died and Taharqa was crowned. Taharqa is responsible for building done both in Nubia as well as Egypt. He built the colonnade in the first court of the temple of Amun at Karnak. There is one column that stands twenty-one meters high and is still standing. During his reign, the Assyrians threatened Egypt once again. The Assyrians were successful in one invasion in which they captured Memphis, wounded Taharqa and stole his family and property. Taharqa survived the attack. It is thought that Taharqa died in 664 BC and was buried in his pyramid at Nuri near Napata, the last great pyramid built on the African continent. The Kings of the XXV dynasty were originating of the Nubian Kingdom of Kush.
Taharqa was a Pharaoh of the XXV Dyn. He was Son Of Piye and Queen Abar. Taharqa was the succesor of his brother Shabataka. He is regarded as a ruler who re-united the Land after the defeat against the Assyrians by Shabataka, which would have influenced internal rebellions.
Taharqa's 26 year reign stands out from any other in the Third Intermediate Period by the extent of the building program he implemented in the first sixteen years of his reign, and the extent of the fighting against the Assyrians in the later years. Taharqa invested considerable resources into celebrating the glory of Amon, first in his native Kingdom of Napata, later in his Egyptian territories as well. Respectful of the cultural heritage of Egypt, Taharqa set out to draw on the traditions of the Old and Middle Kingdoms, using new materials to restore and build. In the kingdom of Napata, he built in every important site: Sanam, Napata, Abu Dom, and Kawa.
In Egypt, it's at Karnak that he made the greatest impact, thanks to the man he installed as Mayor of the City: the great Nubian Mentuemhet, a man who took an extraordinary pride out of his title as a fourth prophet to Amon. At Karnak, the Sacred Lake structures, the kiosk in the first court, and the colonnades at the temple entrance are all owed to Taharqa and Mentuemhet. Memphis, the capital of the Old Kingdom and royal residence of Kushite kings also received much attention, respecting the importance of Ptah, besides the Kushite's devotion to Amun.

Taharqa
Taharqa, also spelled Taharka or Taharqo (Biblical Tirhakah or Tirhaqah, Manetho's Tarakos, Strabo's Tearco), was a pharaoh of the ancient Egypt of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty and qore (king) of the Kingdom of Kush.
Early life
Taharqa was the son of Piye, the Nubian king of Napata who had first conquered Egypt. Taharqa was also the cousin and successor of Shebitku. The successful campaigns of Piye and Shabaka paved the way for a prosperous reign by Taharqa.
Ruling period
Taharqa's reign can be dated from 690 BC to 664 BC. Evidence for the dates of his reign is derived from the Serapeum stela, catalog number 192. This stela records that an Apis bull born and installed (fourth month of Peret, day 9) in Year 26 of Taharqa died in Year 20 of Psammetichus I (4th month of Shomu, day 20), having lived 21 years. This would give Taharqa a reign of 26 years and a fraction, in 690-664 B.C. Taharqa explicitly states in Kawa Stela V, line 15, that he succeeded his predecessor (generally assumed to be Shebitku) after the latter's death with this statement: "I received the Crown in Memphis after the Falcon (i.e., Shebitku) flew to heaven."

Taharqa, as the second to last male Pharaoh of Egypt’s 25th Dynasty helped Egypt maintain its rich African culture for nearly 1,000 years. Taharqa built a plethora of temples in Cush, along with monuments at Karnak, Thebes, and Tanis. For at least eight of his twenty six year reign as Pharaoh, Taharqa fought off the oppression of the Assyrians, and promoted the beauty of the culture of his people.
On the Shoulders of Giants was created by Joseph A. Ward. Mr. Ward is a graduate of Florida A&M; University and holds his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. In 750 B.C.E., Nubia conquered a fragmented Egypt and built the largest empire yet along the Nile.
Nubian kings, beginning with Piye, became the pharoahs of Egypt's 25th Dynasty. They sparked ancient Egypt's last great cultural renaissance, renovating temples and reviving earlier religious teachings. The 25th Dynasty came to an end around 660 B.C.E., when the Assyrians conquered Egypt and forced the Nubians south. There, they established an empire centered in the city of Meroe that flourished for 600 years."
Taharqa LATE KINGDOM 25th Dynasty (690-664) The Nubians fall under the Assyrians invasion. A renaissance in the arts of the 25th Dynasty shows a return to the Old Kingdom style. Taharqa was the brother of Shebitku and was the third king of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty. Shebitku died and Taharqa was crowned. Taharqa is responsible for building done both in Nubia as well as Egypt. He built the colonnade in the first court of the temple of Amun at Karnak. There is one column that stands twenty-one meters high and is still standing. During his reign, the Assyrians threatened Egypt once again. The Assyrians were successful in one invasion in which they captured Memphis, wounded Taharqa and stole his family and property. Taharqa survived the attack. It is thought that Taharqa died in 664 BC and was buried in his pyramid at Nuri near Napata, the last great pyramid built on the African continent. The Kings of the XXV dynasty were originating of the Nubian Kingdom of Kush.
Taharqa was a Pharaoh of the XXV Dyn. He was Son Of Piye and Queen Abar. Taharqa was the succesor of his brother Shabataka. He is regarded as a ruler who re-united the Land after the defeat against the Assyrians by Shabataka, which would have influenced internal rebellions.
Taharqa's 26 year reign stands out from any other in the Third Intermediate Period by the extent of the building program he implemented in the first sixteen years of his reign, and the extent of the fighting against the Assyrians in the later years. Taharqa invested considerable resources into celebrating the glory of Amon, first in his native Kingdom of Napata, later in his Egyptian territories as well. Respectful of the cultural heritage of Egypt, Taharqa set out to draw on the traditions of the Old and Middle Kingdoms, using new materials to restore and build. In the kingdom of Napata, he built in every important site: Sanam, Napata, Abu Dom, and Kawa.
In Egypt, it's at Karnak that he made the greatest impact, thanks to the man he installed as Mayor of the City: the great Nubian Mentuemhet, a man who took an extraordinary pride out of his title as a fourth prophet to Amon. At Karnak, the Sacred Lake structures, the kiosk in the first court, and the colonnades at the temple entrance are all owed to Taharqa and Mentuemhet. Memphis, the capital of the Old Kingdom and royal residence of Kushite kings also received much attention, respecting the importance of Ptah, besides the Kushite's devotion to Amun.
