Roger Caesar Marius Bernard de Delgado Torres Castillo Roberto (1 March 1918 – 18 June 1973) was a British actor, best known as the first actor to play the Master in Doctor Who.
Delgado was born in Whitechapel, in the East End of London; he often remarked to Doctor Who co-star and close friend Jon Pertwee that this made him a true Cockney, as he was born within the sound of the Bow bells, even though his mother was Belgian and his father was Spanish. He attended Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, a Roman Catholic secondary school in Holland Park, and the London School of Economics. He served in the Second World War with both the Leicestershire Regiment and the Royal Signals, attaining the rank of major.
Delgado married Kismet Shahani in 1957 and they were together until his death in 1973.
Delgado worked extensively on the British stage, and on TV, film, and radio. He appeared in the 1955 BBC TV serial Quatermass II, the 1956 Powell and Pressburger wartime drama Battle of the River Plate, and came to wide popular attention in Britain when he played the duplicitous Spanish envoy Mendoza in the ITC Entertainment series Sir Francis Drake from 1961 to 1962, after which he was in much demand. An in-joke in the 1971 Doctor Who story Colony in Space refers to that role, when the Brigadier tells the Doctor not to worry as the suspected sighting of the Master "was only the Spanish Ambassador". Delgado was frequently cast as a villain, appearing in many noted British action-adventure TV series by ITC, including Danger Man (1961), The Saint (1962 and 1966), The Champions (1969), and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969).
Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC from 1963 to the present day. The programme depicts the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord—a space and time-travelling humanoid alien. He explores the universe in his TARDIS, a sentient time-travelling space ship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Accompanied by companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes, while working to save civilisations and help people in need.
The show is a significant part of British popular culture, and elsewhere it has become a cult television favourite. The show has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series. The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot, in the form of a television film. The programme was relaunched in 2005 by Russell T Davies, who was showrunner and head writer for the first five years of its revival, produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. The first series of the 21st century featured Christopher Eccleston in the title role and was produced by the BBC. Series two and three had some development money contributed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), which was credited as a co-producer.Doctor Who also spawned spin-offs in multiple media, including Torchwood (2006–2011) and The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007–2011), both created by Russell T Davies; K-9 (2009–2010); and a single pilot episode of K-9 and Company (1981). There also have been many spoofs and cultural references to the character in other media.

For some reason this line from Roger Delgado as The Master always makes me laugh.
Much to my surprise, while watching the classic British TV series "The Human Jungle," I was greeted by this excellent cameo by Roger Delgado, best known as "The Master" from Doctor Who!

Mini documentary on the Doctors arch enemy The Master! Broadcast in November 1993 as part of the 30th Anniversary of Doctor Who.
The Master (Roger Delgado) regenerates into his thirteenth incarnation, the husk like being seen in The Deadly Assassin. Frontier in Space was Roger Delgado's swansong as the Master. Another story was considered in which the Master would meet his comeuppance, possibly whilst saving the Doctors life, but sadly Roger was killed in a car accident before plans for a script had gotten any further. So the rushed and unsatisfactory conclusion to the Master's part in Frontier in Space was the last we got to see of Delgado in the role. The character of the Master eventually returned in 1976. This piece bridges the gap between incarnations, though whether you choose to believe the Delgado Master regenerated in the emaciated husk or not is up to you.

In tribute to Roger Delgado 1918-1973. I was particularly impressed by the clip of the Doctor leaving Gallifrey in 'The Name of the Doctor' and with the recent introduction of the Mistress I thought it only fair to see the Master leave Gallifrey too. The Master was imprisoned on Gallifrey (for unknown reasons... which may or may not be revealed in my future series "Genesis on Gallifrey") and has escaped, much like his 'best enemy' he steals a TARDIS and heads for earth to seek the doctor... (and revenge! But what for... find out in Genesis on Gallifrey). This clip takes place directly before Terror of the Autons and we see the introduction of the Master as played by Roger Delgado at the end. Terror of the Autons was first broadcast this week in 1971. DOCTOR WHO IS OWNED BY THE BBC . I DO ...

Dr. Carlos Castaneda was an anthropologist, visionary and author whose work continues to resonate and live on. During the 1960’s Castaneda developed a unique relationship with a Yaqui Indian leader, who infused him with the knowledge of the shamans of ancient Mexico, a practical type of shamanism focused on the development of one’s attention and energy in order to liberate perception and regain vitality in life. Sherwin's first choice to replace Troughton was actor Ron Moody, star of the musical Oliver!, but when he turned the part down, comic actor Jon Pertwee, another candidate from Sherwin's shortlist, was cast instead. Sherwin had hoped that Pertwee would bring much of his comic acting skill to the part, but he was keen to establish himself as a serious dramatic actor as well as a comedian. Although some lighter touches were visible throughout Pertwee's era, he essentially played it very "straight" and not at all as Sherwin had envisioned. Pertwee's Doctor was more action-oriented than his predecessors, and the producers allowed Pertwee to indulge his love of riding various vehicles during his tenure, including motorcycles, hovercraft, the so-called "Whomobile" and the Doctor's vintage roadste...
