Upolu
Upolu is an island in Samoa, formed by a massive basaltic shield volcano which rises from the seafloor of the western Pacific Ocean. The island is 75 kilometres (47 mi) long, 1,125 km2 (434 sq mi) in area, and is the second largest in geographic area as well as with 135,000 people the most populated of the Samoan Islands. Upolu is situated to the southeast of the "big island", Savai'i. The capital Apia is in the middle of the north coast with Faleolo International Airport at the western end of the island. The island has not had any historically recorded eruptions, although three lava flows date back only a few hundred to a few thousand years.
In the Samoan branch of Polynesian mythology, Upolu was the first woman on the island of the same name.
In 1841, the island was the site of the Bombardment of Upolu, an incident during the United States Exploring Expedition.
In the late 19th century, the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson owned a 400-acre (160 ha) estate at Vailima village and died there in 1894. He is buried at the top of Mount Vaea above his former home. The Vailima estate was purchased in 1900 as the official residence for the German governor and, after British/Dominion confiscation, served successively as residence for the New Zealand administrator and for the Samoan head of state after independence.

The falls are quite powerful and plunge into a vast gorge surrounded by spectacular jungle. The falls are overlooked by a beautiful garden and picnic site which is an excellent place to stop for lunch. Access to the site overlooking the falls, which requires paying a small fee, is through Lotofagu village which is also surrounded by beautiful, often brightly coloured gardens well worth taking a little extra time to look through as well.

The Sopaga Falls are just off Le Mafa Pass Road, towards southeastern Upolu, about 40 minutes drive from Apia.
The falls are quite powerful and plunge into a vast gorge surrounded by spectacular jungle.
The falls are overlooked by a beautiful garden and picnic site which is an excellent place to stop for lunch.
Access to the site overlooking the falls, which requires paying a small fee, is through Lotofagu village which is also surrounded by beautiful, often brightly coloured gardens well worth taking a little extra time to look through as well.

우폴루로 돌아와서 며칠 전 다녀왔던 마을어른의 초대를 받았다. “손님이 오면 늘 이 음식을 만드나요?” “네, 특별한 손님이 찾아오면 항상 이 음식을 만들어 대접하지요.” 음식재료는 모두 마을 주변에서 구했다고 한다. 먼저 타로는 껍질을 깨끗하게 벗겨낸다. 다음으로 코코넛 열매는 가루로 만든 다음 크림을 추출한다. 이곳의 전통요리는 돌을 잘 달구는 게 중요하단다. 다음으로 바나나 잎을 살짝 굽는다. 마을의 어른은 익숙한 솜씨로 음식을 준비했다. 사모아 인근 국가에서는 카레가루와 소금으로 양념한 양파를 함께 넣어서 만들기도 하지만 이곳에서는 코코넛 크림만을 넣고 만든단다. “자, 이제 요리할 준비가 다 됐네요.” 이제 잘 익힐 일만 남았다. 돼지 몸에는 잘 달군 돌과 냄새제거를 위해서 풀을 함께 집어넣었다. 피지나 통가에서는 땅을 파서 가마를 만드는데 이곳에서는 이렇게 맨 땅위에 만든단다. 준비된 음식을 가마위에 모두 올려놓으면 싱싱한 바나나 잎으로 먼저 덮고 마지막으로는 열손실을 막아 음식 맛을 제대로 내기 위해 잘 마른 바나나 잎으로 덮었다. 우무 준비를 끝낸 마을 청년 로카는 나를 코코넛 나무로 데리고 갔다. 나무에 오르는 솜씨가 마치 다람쥐 같다. 로카는 금방 따온 싱싱한 코코넛을 나에게 건네줬다. 며칠 전 시장에서 마셔 본 것보다 훨씬 신선하고 단 맛이 강했다. 한 시간 반이 걸려 우무가 완성됐다. 타로는 우리의 감자나 고구마와 비슷하다. 마을 어른은 흡족한 표정이다 “요리가 아주 잘 됐네요.” 타로구이는 감자맛과 비슷했고 돼지고기는 아주 담백했다. 팔루사미는 우리의 나물무침과 비슷했는데 코코넛 크림을 타로구이에 발라먹어야 제대로 먹는 거라고 했다. “이번 기회에 여기 오고 싶어 하는 한국 사람이 있다면 고마운 일이죠. 저희가 한국 사람들과 같이 아주 친절한 사람들이라는 것을 알게 될 겁니다.”
