Prof. Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi economist and founder of the Grameen Bank, an institution that provides microcredit to help its clients establish creditworthiness and financial self-sufficiency. In 2006 Yunus and Grameen received the Nobel Peace Prize. Yunus himself has received several other national and international honors.
He is a member of advisory board at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. Previously, he was a professor of economics at Chittagong University where he developed the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. He is the author of Banker to the Poor and two books on Social Business Models, and a founding board member of Grameen America and Grameen Foundation.

‘Making money is a happiness. And that’s a great incentive. Making other people happy is a super-happiness.’
These are the words of Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Bangladeshi economist world-famous for starting the microfinance movement. That movement is just part of Yunus’s mission to ‘put poverty in the museums’. A charismatic visionary, as much at ease with global leaders as he is with the poorest of street beggars, Professor Yunus believes every person can play a part in reducing poverty. And they can do this not by writing out a cheque to a charity or through hard-headed capitalism, but by means of a model that lies somewhere between the two. He calls this model social business.
As Professor Yunus likes to explain it, social business isn’t just about helping the poor – it can also help to change us. When we put on ‘social business glasses’ we start looking at the world and thinking about it in new ways. We bring fresh insight to our conventional profit-maximising companies and become more multi-dimensional, happier human beings in the process.
So what is a social business? It is one whose owners are motivated to solve a social problem such as unemployment. The difference between this and the more familiar social enterprise model is that the owners of a social business do not make money for themselves. Profits are ploughed back into the company instead of being paid out as dividends. And unlike a charity or NGO which has to rely on donations to keep running, a social business is profit-making and therefore financially sustainable.
Scale for Professor Yunus is all-important. In Colombia, for example, Yunus Social Business (YSB) financed a social business that has created a network of healthcare providers who offer 10,000 users, including the poorest of the poor, access to affordable and prompt healthcare. In Haiti, in order to address the spread of infectious diseases YSB set up a business to commercialize locally produced disinfectant. Now there are 100 points of sale that give 500,000 Haitians access to cleaning products at one-third of the usual market cost.
Since 2011, Yunus Social Business has supported 20 social businesses in seven different countries, mentored over 200 entrepreneurs and impacted over 10,000 customers.

1. Start very small
He studied at Chittagong College, he became active in cultural activities and won awards for drama.
2. Challenge things
He enrolled in the Department of Economics at Dhaka University and completed his BA in 1960 and MA in 1961.
3. Don't be money centered
During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he founded a citizen's committee and ran the Bangladesh Information Center.
4. Don't wait for a certificate
He's a founding board member of Grameen America and Grameen Foundation, which support microcredit.
5. Behave like a job creator
In 1983, the pilot project began operation as a full-fledged bank for poor Bangladeshis and was renamed Grameen Bank.

Muhammad Yunus (@Yunus_Centre) was born on 28 June 1940 in the village of Bathua, Chittagong, a seaport in Bangladesh. The third of fourteen children, he was educated at Dhaka University and was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study economics at Vanderbilt University. He then served as chairman of the economics department at Chittagong University before devoting his life to providing financial and social services to the poorest of the poor. He is the founder of Grameen Bank, serving as managing director until May 2011. Yunus is the author of the bestselling Banker to the Poor. In October 2006, Muhammad Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Grameen Bank, for their efforts to create economic and social development. Muhammad Yunus was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Economics) by LSE in November 2011. In April 2013 he received the US Congressional Gold Medal.
Professor Alnoor Bhimani is director of LSE Entrepreneurship.

In early 2007 Yunus showed interest in launching a political party in Bangladesh named Nagorik Shakti (Citizen Power), but later discarded the plan. He is one of the founding members of Global Elders.

As Professor Yunus likes to explain it, social business isn’t just about helping the poor – it can also help to change us. When we put on ‘social business glasses’ we start looking at the world and thinking about it in new ways. We bring fresh insight to our conventional profit-maximising companies and become more multi-dimensional, happier human beings in the process.
So what is a social business? It is one whose owners are motivated to solve a social problem such as unemployment. The difference between this and the more familiar social enterprise model is that the owners of a social business do not make money for themselves. Profits are ploughed back into the company instead of being paid out as dividends. And unlike a charity or NGO which has to rely on donations to keep running, a social business is profit-making and therefore financially sustainable.
Scale for Professor Yunus is all-important. In Colombia, for example, Yunus Social Business (YSB) financed a social business that has created a network of healthcare providers who offer 10,000 users, including the poorest of the poor, access to affordable and prompt healthcare. In Haiti, in order to address the spread of infectious diseases YSB set up a business to commercialize locally produced disinfectant. Now there are 100 points of sale that give 500,000 Haitians access to cleaning products at one-third of the usual market cost.
Since 2011, Yunus Social Business has supported 20 social businesses in seven different countries, mentored over 200 entrepreneurs and impacted over 10,000 customers.

1. Start very small
He studied at Chittagong College, he became active in cultural activities and won awards for drama.
2. Challenge things
He enrolled in the Department of Economics at Dhaka University and completed his BA in 1960 and MA in 1961.
3. Don't be money centered
During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he founded a citizen's committee and ran the Bangladesh Information Center.
4. Don't wait for a certificate
He's a founding board member of Grameen America and Grameen Foundation, which support microcredit.
5. Behave like a job creator
In 1983, the pilot project began operation as a full-fledged bank for poor Bangladeshis and was renamed Grameen Bank.
6. Find your inspiration
He received the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.

In 2008, he was rated number 2 in Foreign Policy magazine's list of the 'Top 100 Global Thinkers'.

1. Start very small
He studied at Chittagong College, he became active in cultural activities and won awards for drama.
2. Challenge things
He enrolled in the Department of Economics at Dhaka University and completed his BA in 1960 and MA in 1961.
3. Don't be money centered
During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he founded a citizen's committee and ran the Bangladesh Information Center.
4. Don't wait for a certificate
He's a founding board member of Grameen America and Grameen Foundation, which support microcredit.
5. Behave like a job creator
In 1983, the pilot project began operation as a full-fledged bank for poor Bangladeshis and was renamed Grameen Bank.
6. Find your inspiration
He received the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.
7. Reinvent your purpose
In 2008, he was rated number 2 in Foreign Policy magazine's list of the 'Top 100 Global Thinkers'.
8. Don't limit your imagination
He co-founded Yunus Social Business – Global Initiatives.
9. Have confidence
In 2012, he became Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland.
10. Create the better world
He published several books related to his finance work.

The Rosetta probe will be crash-landed on Comet 67P on Friday 30 September, the European Space Agency has confirmed. The manoeuvre, which is expected to destroy the satellite, will bring to an end two years of investigations at the 4km-wide icy dirt-ball. Flight controllers plan to have the cameras taking and relaying pictures during the final descent. Sensors that "sniff" the chemical environment will also be switched on ... @BBCAmos. ....
