"Bullet the Blue Sky" is the fourth track from U2's 1987 album, The Joshua Tree. The song is one of the band's most overtly politically toned songs, with live performances often being heavily critical of political conflicts and violence. Overall, it is U2's 6th-most-played live song with almost 650 live appearances.
The song was originally written about the United States' military intervention during the 1980s in the El Salvador Civil War. Bono told The Edge to "put El Salvador through an amplifier". The song is a combination of The Edge's guitar slides, Adam Clayton's laid back bassline, Larry Mullen Jr.'s cold drumming and Bono's aggressive and growly vocals during the verses, and a spoken word section during the bridge. Bono was thinking of American President Ronald Reagan as he sang "This guy comes up to me / His face red like a rose on a thorn bush / Like all the colours of a royal flush / And he's peeling off those dollar bills / Slapping them down / 100! / 200!"
It was claimed in the U2 Podcast Editions in iTunes that this is Paul McGuinness' (U2's manager) favorite song. In 2004, Mojo placed the song at number 17 on its list of the "100 Epic Rock Tracks".

The Blue is a central market place in Bermondsey an area in London. The market is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm and has about 50 stall holders, selling food and clothes. The area has been known as The Blue for more than two hundred and thirty years and is probably named after the Blue Anchor public house that gave its name to Blue Anchor Lane.
In 2005 a Metropolitan Police report described the area as a crime hotspot for "race crime and youth disorder". In 2009 during the funeral procession of Jade Goody a white dove was released at The Blue, where her family once had a stall.
