Jimmy Donal "Jimbo" Wales (
/ˈdoʊnəl ˈweɪlz/; born August 7, 1966) is an American Internet entrepreneur best known as a co-founder and promoter of the online non-profit encyclopedia Wikipedia and the Wikia company. Wales was born in Huntsville, Alabama, United States, where he attended Randolph School, a university-preparatory school, then earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance. While in graduate school, he taught at two universities, but left before completing a PhD in order to take a job in finance and later worked as the research director of a Chicago futures and options firm. In 1996, he and two partners founded Bomis, a male-oriented web portal featuring entertainment and adult content. The company would provide the initial funding for the peer-reviewed free encyclopedia Nupedia (2000–2003) and its successor, Wikipedia.
On January 15, 2001, with Larry Sanger and others, Wales launched Wikipedia, a free, open content encyclopedia that enjoyed rapid growth and popularity, and as Wikipedia’s public profile grew, he became the project’s promoter and spokesman. He is historically cited as a co-founder of Wikipedia, though he has disputed the "co-" designation, declaring himself the sole founder. Wales serves on the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit charitable organization he helped establish to operate Wikipedia, holding its board-appointed "community founder" seat. In 2004, he co-founded Wikia, a for-profit wiki-hosting service. His role in creating Wikipedia, which has become the world’s largest encyclopedia, prompted Time magazine to name him in its 2006 list of the world’s most influential people.

Cory Efram Doctorow (/ˈkɒri ˈdɒktəroʊ/; born July 17, 1971) is a Canadian-Britishblogger, journalist, and science fiction author who serves as co-editor of the weblog Boing Boing. He is an activist in favour of liberalising copyright laws and a proponent of the Creative Commons organization, using some of their licences for his books. Some common themes of his work include digital rights management, file sharing, and "post-scarcity" economics.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Trotskyist teachers, Doctorow was raised in a Jewish activist household. His father was born in a refugee camp in Azerbaijan and Doctorow became involved with nuclear disarmament activism and as a Greenpeace campaigner as a child. He received his high school diploma from SEED School, an anarchistic "free school" in Toronto, and attended four universities without attaining a degree.
He later served on the board of directors for the Grindstone Island Co-operative in Big Rideau Lake in Ontario.
During 1992 Doctorow went on a volunteer visit to Costa Rica with Youth Challenge International (YCI), which he found "profoundly good and profoundly enriching".

Jimmy Wales predicts that the Internet will democratise developing countries by making the world 'flat,' opening markets, promoting cultural understanding and giving developing nations the resources they need to compete in the 21st century. With current total Internet usage of one billion people set to double in the next five to 10 years (with the majority of new users arising from developing nations), Wales asserts that the Internet will combat stereotypes, censorship, media control, and monopolies while simultaneously allowing citizens of developing nations to have a more prominent voice. As Wales states: ""It does not take a lot of technology to foster open dialog and debate. Even the simplest technologies like mailing lists, wikis, blogs can help a lot. What is needed mostly, I think, is more content in local languages, and support from people around the world to help others join in the global conversation.""

In the future powerful computing capacity will be in billions of devices ranging from the lightbulb to the car door to new wearables. This new internet of things (IoT) will dramatically change our lives.
Paul Brody, a Technology Strategist and the former VP of Mobile and IoT at IBM, joined us for a discussion of where the IoT is going. We discussed their white paper on why a decentralized, blockchain-based internet of things could solve the problems of the current IoT in terms of privacy, scalability, and business models.

Some slam social media for being unreliable, but recent history shows that the more people who contribute to a body of knowledge, the more reliable it becomes.
In its infancy, we as academics abhorred the superficiality of Wikipedia, but thankfully a number kept an eye on it, and began adding their 10 cents worth.
Today, the people’s 'encyclopaedia' is more reliable than Encyclopaedia Britannica, because structurally, it is a model that self-corrects, and where the best information percolates to the top.
We now admit that the ivory tower is neither the only, nor the best broadcaster of fact. But is the public domain, such as it now stands; not also a better place to carve out policy?
We have needed representatives for many centuries, because we couldn’t physically be present, to acquire or transmit information.
21st century technology reduces that need dramatically, and if you apply the model of Wikipedia, political debates might very well drift in the future, to being decided by the many.

FCC's Net Neutrality Shift a Victory for Open Internet & Grassroots Activism Against Cable Giants

http://democracynow.org - After much anticipation, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission has unveiled what he calls "the strongest open Internet protections ever proposed by the [agency]." Tom Wheeler backed the regulation of Internet service like a public utility in order to uphold net neutrality, the principle of a free and open Internet. The new rules would prevent Internet service providers like Comcast from blocking access to websites, slowing down content, or providing paid fast lanes for Internet service. It would also extend such protections to Internet service on cell phones and tablets. The proposal comes after the FCC received a record-setting number of public comments — nearly four million, almost all in support of strong protections. President Obama also released public statements in support of Internet protections. The FCC will vote on the plan February 26, ahead of an influx of lobbying by the telecom industry, which has also threatened to sue if the measure passes. We are joined by Tim Karr, senior director of strategy for Free Press, one of the main organizers of the Internet Countdown campaign leading up to the FCC's net neutrality vote.

The Internet and Democracy - with Prof Simon Tormey
Some slam social media for being unreliable, but recent history shows that the more people who contribute to a body of knowledge, the more reliable it becomes. In its infancy, we as academics abhorred the superficiality of Wikipedia, but thankfully a number kept an eye on it, and began adding their 10 cents worth. Today, the people’s 'encyclopaedia' is more reliable than Encyclopaedia Britannica, because structurally, it is a model that self-corrects, and where the best information percolates to the top. We now admit that the ivory tower is neither the only, nor the best broadcaster of fact. But is the public domain, such as it now stands; not also a better place to carve out policy? We have needed representatives for many centuries, because we couldn’t physically be present, to acquire or transmit information. 21st century technology reduces that need dramatically, and if you apply the model of Wikipedia, political debates might very well drift in the future, to being decided by the many. Internet access is cheap, fast and widespread ... Urbanites are prone to saying that technology is about freedom, and that the internet is about democracy. The UN has even declared that internet access is a basic human right. However, across much of the planet it is still a luxury, as internet costs are exorbitant, access is painfully slow and mobile signals drop out. The internet isn't finished....

I think that the Internet has an enormous potential for development of participatory democracy. However, I think that what needs to be unmasked immediately is the precept position that the Internet is equal to democracy ... In that sense, particularly in opening up alternative public spheres – where people can begin to write and say things that they could not do in the past – the potential of the Internet for democracy is enormous....
