Corb Lund debuts his new album Things That Can't Be Undone at a CBC Music First Play Live.

The name Corb Lund sounds like it was hewn from the majestic Rocky Mountains and thrust out onto the Alberta prairie. Being a fourth-generation cattleman, Lund also has the aura of a man who's comfortable on the ranch.
Some of the best songs on his new album, Things That Can't Be Undone, capture the essence of the modern rancher. "S Lazy H" is a heartbreaking song about losing the family ranch, while "Weight of the Gun" takes an obvious metaphor to sublime corners of the acreage. The album closes with "Sunbeam," a tribute to Lund's young niece who tragically died recently. Lund was reluctant to include the tender tribute because it's so personal, but thankfully he was convinced otherwise. Lund is a cowboy who knows his way around a metaphor.

Sadr City in Northern Baghdad is now governed by Shi'ite clerics. It has become a virtual 'no-go' area for US troops.
In the back room of a Mosque in Baghdad, six members of the Fedayeen are being held prisoner. They have been severely beaten and are clearly frightened. But their captors are not coalition forces or policemen. They're being detained by the local Shi'ite cleric -- Sheik Saeed. "Those Fedayeen who killed will be killed and those who didn't will be held to account," he proclaims. Saeed's supporters govern everything in Sadr City from the traffic flow to the hospitals and clinics. They were even able to persuade looters to return stolen goods. Now American troops no longer bother patrolling this area, preferring to concentrate on the middle class suburbs that house most of Saddam's former supporters. Baghdad has effectively been split into two cities. However, control of Sadr City may not be enough and the Shi'ites are already impatient for American withdrawal. "If the American army becomes an occupier, it will face real Iraqi fighting," predicts Saeed: "I'll wire myself and my children with explosives and blow up American forces if they don't leave."

STORYLINE
United States forces attacked rebel positions as fierce fighting erupted early on Wednesday in Baghdad's Sadr City, killing 10 people and injuring 92 others, hospital officials said.
The fighting came as US and Iraqi forces searched for weapons caches in the Shiite stronghold, an east Baghdad slum.
An Associated Press reporter near the scene said a US C130 gunship raked one area with heavy fire after rebels loyal to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr opened fire with rocket propelled grenades.
US warplanes and Apache helicopter gunships also carried out strikes.
One helicopter was hit by groundfire but managed to return to its base, and one tank was disabled by a roadside bomb.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries to US forces.
Iraqi police and US troops immediately cordoned off the area.

On April 6, 2008, the Iraqi National Security Council released a statement calling on all political parties to disband their militias if they want to participate in the elections later in the year. The statement was seen to be directed at Muqtada al-Sadr, who derives most of his support from Sadr City.
On the same day, a joint U.S. and Iraqi military force (Iraqi elements drawn from the 11th Division) moved into the southern suburbs of Sadr City, provoking heavy street fighting as militiamen opened fire with RPGs and automatic weapons.
U.S. Apache helicopters provided air support during the battle, launching Hellfire missiles at militiamen and their vehicles...The raid was a part of an attempt to stop mortar and rocket fire on the Green Zone by seizing neighborhoods in Sadr City used as launching points by the Mahdi Army, Rockets and mortar fire continued to fall on the Green Zone and U.S. military bases around the capital. Three US soldiers and at least 20 Iraqis had been killed by the end of the day...
Over the next week, militiamen in Sadr City and the neighboring suburbs continued emplacing IEDs, firing rockets and attacking U.S. forces constructing the barrier along al-Quds street. However U.S. forces, supported by UAVs firing Hellfire missiles, Bradley APCs, M1A2 tanks and U.S. Special Forces, inflicted heavy casualties on the militiamen. The U.S. military claimed that between May 3 and May 9, it had killed at least 76 militiamen...
On May 11, a cease-fire went into effect and on May 12 a 14-point agreement was signed between the Iraqi government and representatives of Muqtada al-Sadr, granting Iraqi military forces permission by the Mahdi Army to enter the district to establish security checkpoints and to hunt for rogue militiamen. Under the agreement, the U.S. military would not enter areas of Sadr City north of al-Quds street, but the Mahdi Army promised to stop rocket attacks on U.S. military bases and the Green Zone...
At least 941 people were killed. Among the dead were 22 U.S. and 17 Iraqi soldiers as well as 331 militants and 591 civilians. 100 U.S. soldiers and more than 1,700 civilians were wounded. 549 of the civilians were killed in Sadr City while another 42 were killed in different parts of Baghdad by mortars, fired from Sadr City, which missed the Green Zone.

In what can only be described as a giant monument to the U.S. military's failure to quell the violence in Iraq and unite the country, they have given up and are attempting to wall off the entire town of Sadr City, the home of the greatest concentration of insurgents in Iraq.

Sadr City
Sadr City (Arabic: مدينة الصدر - Madinat aṣ-Ṣadr) formerly known as الثورة and Saddam City, is a suburb district of the city of Baghdad, Iraq. It was built in 1959 by Prime Minister Abdul Karim Qassim and later unofficially renamed Sadr City after Ayatollah Mohammad Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr.
Sadr City (or more accurately Thawra District — Arabic: حيّ الثورة - ħayy ath-Thawra) is one of nine administrative districts in Baghdad. A public housing project neglected by Saddam Hussein, Sadr City holds around 1 million residents.
History
Sadr City was built in Iraq in 1959 by Prime Minister Abdul Karim Qassim in response to grave housing shortages in Baghdad. At the time named Revolution City (مدينة الثورة "Al-Thawra"), it provided housing for Baghdad's urban poor, many of whom had come from the countryside and who had until then lived in appalling conditions. It quickly became a stronghold of the Iraqi Communist Party, and resistance to the Baathist-led coup of 1963 was strong there.
In 1982, the district was renamed Saddam City. After the foreign occupation of Baghdad in April 2003, the district was unofficially renamed Sadr City after deceased shiite leader Mohammad Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr.

The statement was seen to be directed at Muqtada al-Sadr, who derives most of his support from Sadr City. On the same day, a joint U.S. and Iraqi military force (Iraqi elements drawn from the 11th Division) moved into the southern suburbs of Sadr City, provoking heavy street fighting as militiamen opened fire with RPGs and automatic weapons. U.S. Apache helicopters provided air support during the battle, launching Hellfire missiles at militiamen and their vehicles...The raid was a part of an attempt to stop mortar and rocket fire on the Green Zone by seizing neighborhoods in Sadr City used as launching points by the Mahdi Army, Rockets and mortar fire continued to fall on the Green Zone and U.S. military bases around the capital. Three US soldiers and at least 20 Iraqis had been killed by the end of the day... Over the next week, militiamen in Sadr City and the neighboring suburbs continued emplacing IEDs, firing rockets and attacking U.S. forces constructing the barrier along al-Quds street. However U.S. forces, supported by UAVs firing Hellfire missiles, Bradley APCs, M1A2 tanks and U.S. Special Forces, inflicted heavy casualties on the militiamen. The U.S. military claimed that between May 3 and May 9, it had killed at least 76 militiamen... On May 11, a cease-fire went into effect and on May 12 a 14-point agreement was signed between the Iraqi government and representatives of Muqtada al-Sadr, granting Iraqi military forces permission by the Mahdi Army to enter the district to establish security checkpoints and to hunt for rogue militiamen. Under the agreement, the U.S. military would not enter areas of Sadr City north of al-Quds street, but the Mahdi Army promised to stop rocket attacks on U.S. military bases and the Green Zone... At least 941 people were killed. Among the dead were 22 U.S. and 17 Iraqi soldiers as well as 331 militants and 591 civilians. 100 U.S. soldiers and more than 1,700 civilians were wounded. 549 of the civilians were killed in Sadr City while another 42 were killed in different parts of Baghdad by mortars, fired from Sadr City, which missed the Green Zone. -

In the back room of a Mosque in Baghdad, six members of the Fedayeen are being held prisoner. They have been severely beaten and are clearly frightened. But their captors are not coalition forces or policemen. They're being detained by the local Shi'ite cleric -- Sheik Saeed. Sadr City in Northern Baghdad is now governed by Shi'ite clerics. It has become a virtual 'no-go' area for US troops.
In the back room of a Mosque in Baghdad, six members of the Fedayeen are being held prisoner. They have been severely beaten and are clearly frightened. But their captors are not coalition forces or policemen. They're being detained by the local Shi'ite cleric -- Sheik Saeed. "Those Fedayeen who killed will be killed and those who didn't will be held to account," he proclaims. Saeed's supporters govern everything in Sadr City from the traffic flow to the hospitals and clinics. They were even able to persuade looters to return stolen goods. Now American troops no longer bother patrolling this area, preferring to concentrate on the middle class suburbs that house most of Saddam's former supporters. Baghdad has effectively been split into two cities. However, control of Sadr City may not be enough and the Shi'ites are already impatient for American withdrawal. "If the American army becomes an occupier, it will face real Iraqi fighting," predicts Saeed: "I'll wire myself and my children with explosives and blow up American forces if they don't leave."

STORYLINE
United States forces attacked rebel positions as fierce fighting erupted early on Wednesday in Baghdad's Sadr City, killing 10 people and injuring 92 others, hospital officials said.
The fighting came as US and Iraqi forces searched for weapons caches in the Shiite stronghold, an east Baghdad slum.
An Associated Press reporter near the scene said a US C130 gunship raked one area with heavy fire after rebels loyal to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr opened fire with rocket propelled grenades.
US warplanes and Apache helicopter gunships also carried out strikes.
One helicopter was hit by groundfire but managed to return to its base, and one tank was disabled by a roadside bomb.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries to US forces.
Iraqi police and US troops immediately cordoned off the area.

United States forces attacked rebel positions as fierce fighting erupted early on Wednesday in Baghdad's Sadr City, killing 10 people and injuring 92 others, hospital officials said.

On the same day, a joint U.S. and Iraqi military force (Iraqi elements drawn from the 11th Division) moved into the southern suburbs of Sadr City, provoking heavy street fighting as militiamen opened fire with RPGs and automatic weapons.
U.S. Apache helicopters provided air support during the battle, launching Hellfire missiles at militiamen and their vehicles...The raid was a part of an attempt to stop mortar and rocket fire on the Green Zone by seizing neighborhoods in Sadr City used as launching points by the Mahdi Army, Rockets and mortar fire continued to fall on the Green Zone and U.S. military bases around the capital. Three US soldiers and at least 20 Iraqis had been killed by the end of the day...

Under the agreement, the U.S. military would not enter areas of Sadr City north of al-Quds street, but the Mahdi Army promised to stop rocket attacks on U.S. military bases and the Green Zone...
At least 941 people were killed. Among the dead were 22 U.S. and 17 Iraqi soldiers as well as 331 militants and 591 civilians. 100 U.S. soldiers and more than 1,700 civilians were wounded. 549 of the civilians were killed in Sadr City while another 42 were killed in different parts of Baghdad by mortars, fired from Sadr City, which missed the Green Zone.

Occupied by Spain since the late 19th century, the Western Sahara has been on the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories since 1963 after a Moroccan demand.[4] It is the most populous territory on that list, and by far the largest in area. In 1965, the UN General Assembly adopted its first resolution on Western Sahara, asking Spain to decolonise the territory. One year later, a new resolution was passed by the General Assembly requesting that a referendum be held by Spain on self-determination.
In 1975, Spain relinquished the administrative control of the territory to a joint administration by Morocco (which had formally claimed the territory since 1957) and Mauritania.[6] A war erupted between those countries and the Sahrawi national liberation movement, the Polisario Front, which proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) with a government-in-exile in Tindouf, Algeria. Mauritania withdrew in 1979, and Morocco eventually secured effective control of most of the territory, including all the major cities and natural resources.
Since a United Nations-sponsored ceasefire agreement in 1991, two thirds of the territory (including most of the Atlantic coast line)[8] has been controlled by Morocco and the remainder by the SADR, strongly backed by Algeria.[9] Internationally, countries such as the United States and Russia have taken a generally ambiguous and neutral position on each side's claims, and have pressed both parties to agree on a peaceful resolution. Both Morocco and Polisario have sought to boost their claims by accumulating formal recognition, essentially from African, Asian, and Latin American states in the developing world. The Polisario Front has won formal recognition for SADR from 53 states, and was extended membership in the African Union. Morocco has won recognition or support for its position from several African governments and from most of the Arab League. In both instances, recognitions have, over the past two decades, been extended and withdrawn according to changing international trends.[citation needed] As of 2006, no other member state of the United Nations has recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.

The Ali Sadr Cave (Persian: غار علی صدر) originally called Ali Saadr or Ali Saard (meaning cold) is the world's largest water cave which attracts millions of visitors every year. It is located Ali Sadr Kabudarahang County about 100 kilometers north of Hamedan, western Iran (more accurately at 48°18'E 35°18'N). Since the cave is situated between the large cities Hamadan, Tehran, and Qom it is a popular destination for Iranians. Tours of the cave are available by pedal boats.
Cave located in 75 km north of Hamedan in western Iran .The cave belongs to second Jurassic period (130-190 million years ago); its walls can extend up to 40 meters high, and it contains several large, deep lakes. The cave has a river flowing through it and traveling through the cave is mostly done by pedal boats. Ali Sadr cave is situated between the large cities in Hamedan, Tehran and Zanjan making it a popular destination for Iranians and foreign tourists.
The cave was originally discovered during the reign of Darius I (521-485 BC) which can be verified by an old inscription at the entrance of the tunnel. Knowledge of the cave existence there have been within local residents for centuries, however, its exploration as a natural attraction was in 1963. It is opened to public from 1975 to now.
In the summer of 2001, a German/British expedition surveyed the cave to be 11 kilometers long. The main chamber of the cave is 100 meters by 50 meters and 40 meters high.
A tour of the cave can be seen by pedal boats to a centrally located large atrium.

STORYLINE:
The United States military on Wednesday accused Iraqi fighters loyal to a rebel cleric of firing on American forces from one of Shia Islam's holiest shrines.
The militia of cleric Muqtada al-Sadr was operating from the Imam Hussein shrine, according to Captain Noel Gorospe, spokesman for the US Army's First Armoured Division.
Gorospe said an AC-130 gunship was used in an airstrike against insurgents around the Imam Hussein shrine in recent days, but said it did not shoot into the shrine.
Since Tuesday, U.S. F-16 jets have been flying over Karbala around the clock.
The city south of Baghdad has been the scene of heavy fighting since al-Sadr launched an uprising against the US-led coalition last month.
Seven militiamen were killed in fighting in the centre of Karbala, hospital officials said.
Later on Wednesday, a civilian was also killed in the area of the fighting and a car was seen burning in the street.
Daily insurgent attacks have centered on Karbala's Mukhaiyam mosque and the surrounding area, which the US military took over in operations last week.
The coalition said Iraqi fighters were using the mosque as a military base, and said it had no intention of relinquishing the mosque until militias leave the town.
Al-Sadr has accused US forces of desecrating shrines in Karbala and another holy city, Najaf.
The US military denies the allegations, saying militiamen have used Muslim holy places as firing positions and storerooms for weapons.
