Karratha is an Australian city adjoining the port of Dampier in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, which was established in 1968 to accommodate the processing and exportation workforce of the Hamersley Iron mining company and, in the 1980s, the petroleum and liquefied natural gas operations of the North West Shelf Venture. At the 2011 census, Karratha had a population of 16,475. The city's name comes from the cattle station from which land was reclaimed for the development. Karratha in the local Aboriginal language means 'good country' or 'soft earth'. The city is the seat of government of the City of Karratha.
Karratha is located approximately 1,535 kilometres (954 mi) north of Perth and 850 kilometres (528 mi) south of Broome on the North West Coastal Highway.
Karratha is composed of 9 main suburbs: Karratha City Centre, Bulgarra, Pegs Creek, Millars Well, Nickol, Nickol West, Baynton, Baynton West, Tambrey and one industrial area, known as both the LIA (Light Industrial Area) and KIE (Karratha Industrial Estate). Karratha's housing development continues, with new villages and suburbs being built. Baynton West is currently being developed. Also a new suburb going east of Bulgarra with an indigenous name, Mulataga has received Council approval. There is current development of a second Industrial Estate: Gap Ridge which is west of the city, past the cemetery.
Western Australia (abbreviated as WA) is a state occupying the entire western third of Australia. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the north and west, the Great Australian Bight and Southern Ocean to the south, the Northern Territory to the north-east and South Australia to the south-east. Western Australia is Australia's largest state with a total land area of 2,529,875 square kilometres (976,790 sq mi), and the second-largest country subdivision in the world – however, a significant part of it is sparsely populated. The state has about 2.6 million inhabitants, around 11% of the national total. 92% of the population lives in the south-west corner of the state.
The first European visitor to Western Australia was the Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog, who visited the Western Australian coast in 1616. The New South Wales colonial government established a convict-supported military garrison at King George III Sound, at present-day Albany, in 1826, which was followed by the establishment of the Swan River Colony in 1829, including the site of the present-day capital, Perth. York was the first inland settlement in Western Australia. Situated 97 kilometres east of Perth, it was settled on 16 September 1831.
The City of Karratha is one of the four local government areas in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It covers an area of 15,882 square kilometres (6,132 sq mi) and has a population of about 25,000 (as of October 2013), most of which is located in its seat of government, the city of Karratha, and the major towns. It was formerly known as the Shire of Roebourne but was renamed and granted city status on 1 July 2014.
In 1887, the Municipality of Roebourne, and the Cossack and Roebourne Road Districts all came into being. As the Roebourne region's population declined, the three merged into the Roebourne Road District in 1910. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire of Roebourne under the Local Government Act 1960. On 1 July 2014 it was granted city status and renamed the City of Karratha.
The City is divided into wards:

Karratha is located in a very hot area of the state with temperatures that peak in the high 40s. Over 260 days per year are over the 30C mark. It was established as a satellite town for the port of Dampier when Dampier ran out of room for expansion. The name is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning good country. Other names suggested for the town include; Tanga-tanga, Hearson, Dixon and Nickol. The area was first settled in 1866 by Dr Bayton and Mr. Whittal-Venn but the town was established much later in 1968. Karratha Station was, for many years, the focal point of the area. Life on the station before development came to the Pilbara is described by Tish Lees in her book 'Lonely for my land'. It is a major centre for iron ore workers and excellent modern shopping facilities are a...

Natural resources are powering Australia's economy to record highs, but is there a dark side to the mining boom? Australia is blessed with rugged beauty and a wealth of natural resources - including coal, iron, natural gas and gold. Such minerals are powering Australia's economy to record highs. And as demand from China for more resources grows, new mines continue to open across the country. But critics say there is a dark side to this success story. Mining regions attract transient workers keen to make a quick buck, creating social and environmental problems and a rising crime rate. Mines are also draining Australia's pool of skilled labour from other industries and driving up wages. 101 East asks: What is the cost of Australia's mining boom? Here Australian 101 East fixer Sian Gard...

May bulong, dinggin mo
Ihip ng ating panahon
May sigaw, dinggin mo
At ubos na ang oras mo
Oras na, magpasiya
Kung saan ka pupunta
Oras na, oras na
Mag-iba ka ng landas
Chorus:
Tayo na sa liwanag
Ang takot ay nasa isip lamang
Tama na ang pag-aalinlangan
Ang takot ay nasa isip lamang
Kung daa'y di tiyak
Ang ulo'y laging ligaw
Damhin mo, damhin mo
Ang landas ng puso mo ...
Chorus:
Tayo na sa liwanag
Ang takot ay nasa isip lamang
Tama na ang pag-aalinlangan
Ang takot ay nasa isip lamang
Dinggin mo, damhin mo
Ang landas ng puso mo
Oras na, oras na
Magbuo ka ng pasiya ...
Chorus:
Tayo na sa liwanag
Ang takot ay nasa isip lamang
Tama na ang pag-aalinlangan
Ang takot ay nasa isip lamang
