A try square is a woodworking or a metal working tool used for marking and measuring a piece of wood. The square refers to the tool's primary use of measuring the accuracy of a right angle (90 degrees); to try a surface is to check its straightness or correspondence to an adjoining surface. A piece of wood that is rectangular, flat, and has all edges (faces, sides, and ends) 90 degrees is called four square. A board is often milled four square in preparation for using it in building furniture.
A traditional try square has a broad blade made of steel that is riveted to a wooden handle or 'stock'. The inside of the wooden stock usually has a brass strip fixed to it to reduce wear. Some blades also have graduations for measurement. Modern try squares may be all-metal, with stocks that are either die-cast or extruded.
'Try square' is so called because it is used to "try" the squareness.
In geometry, a square is a regular quadrilateral, which means that it has four equal sides and four equal angles (90-degree angles, or right angles). It can also be defined as a rectangle in which two adjacent sides have equal length. A square with vertices ABCD would be denoted ABCD.
The square is the n=2 case of the families of n-hypercubes and n-orthoplexes.
A square has Schläfli symbol {4}. A truncated square, t{4}, is an octagon, {8}. An alternated square, h{4}, is a digon, {2}.
A square is a special case of a rhombus (equal sides, opposite equal angles), a kite (two pairs of adjacent equal sides), a parallelogram (opposite sides parallel), a quadrilateral or tetragon (four-sided polygon), and a rectangle (opposite sides equal, right-angles) and therefore has all the properties of all these shapes, namely:
A try is a way of scoring points in rugby union and rugby league football. A try is scored by grounding the ball in the opposition's in-goal area (on or behind the goal line). Rugby union and league differ slightly in defining 'grounding the ball' and the 'in-goal' area.
The term try comes from try at goal, signifying that originally, grounding the ball only gave the opportunity to try to score with a kick at goal.
A try is analogous to a touchdown in American and Canadian football, with the major difference being that a try requires the ball be simultaneously touching the ground in the in-goal area and an attacking player who is in the field of play or in-goal (the official name of the extra point in American football according to NFL rules is the try). In the laws of both codes of rugby, the term touch down formally refers only to grounding the ball by the defensive team in their in-goal. Although occasionally people refer to a try as a 'touchdown', the correct usage for the action is 'grounding the ball'.

Watch as I make this simple try square inspired by the book "Anarchist Tool Chest" by Christopher Schwarz. The wood for this square was reclaimed from a basement in downtown San Antonio. It was used to build a desk for a client earlier this year and I used some of the leftover to build this try square. Wooden squares have an advantage as they can easily be adjusted with a few passes of a hand plane and they're easily built from scrap wood, much cheaper than they're metal counterparts. This video puts the Harbor Freight combination square against the Mitutoyo tri square. Ones close to $2oo bucks while the other demands $13 bucks. I wonder which one's more accurate?

This episode originally aired on February 20, 2011. I've been using wooden squares for several years now, and I really like them. There have been several articles on making them in Popular woodworking in the last few years, one by Adam Cherubini and one by Chris Schwarz. The two articles were about squares of slightly different proportions (Adam's were based on English designs, while Chris' was based on a French design), but they're still both try squares and still both designed to do the same task; layout and check your work for square. My squares are based more on the French proportion (approx. 2:3), but I make them in different sizes to suit my needs. You can too, even if you don't already own a square. Here's how I make them.

Making planes is fun and rewarding because you get to make exactly what you use and it'll likely far outlast your lifetime. There are many different ways of making planes. In this video I make a grooving plane using both power and hand tools in a combination of laminate and carving methods. This really is something you can make with a very limited set of tools as most of the 'specialty' tools I use are just steel versions of sandpaper on a stick. Make one tool an evening and in no time at all you could have a very nice collection! This is a silent build video to complement our 'Making Grooves' video for those of you who learn by observing. I tried to show lots of different techniques so that woodworkers could pick up new stuff on subsequent views. As a school fundraiser this very plane w...
