Learn how you can square large numbers in your head - instantly! This easy to learn technique will have you calculating the square of numbers up to 100 - without the need for a calculator.
The trick is easy - first we find the distance from the number being squared to the nearest tens number. Say for example we are trying to find the square of 23 - the nearest tens number is 20, which is 3 away from 23. So 3 is our result!
We use this number to find the square - by taking this number from the number being squared (23 - 3 = 20) and then adding this number to the number being squared (23 + 3 = 26). We easily multiply these two numbers (20 x 26 = 520).
To this we add our distance number squared (3 x 3 = 9). So we add 9 to 520...our answer is 529.

After applying an arithmetic operation to two operands and getting a result, you can use this procedure to improve your confidence that the result is correct.
Sum the digits of the first operand; any 9s (or sets of digits that add to 9) can be counted as 0.
If the resulting sum has two or more digits, sum those digits as in step one; repeat this step until the resulting sum has only one digit.
Repeat steps one and two with the second operand. You now have two one-digit numbers, one condensed from the first operand and the other condensed from the second operand. (These one-digit numbers are also the remainders you would end up with if you divided the original operands by 9; mathematically speaking, they're the original operands modulo 9.)
Apply the originally specified operation to the two condensed operands, and then apply the summing-of-digits procedure to the result of the operation.
Sum the digits of the result you originally obtained for the original calculation..

A blessing ceremony has been held for the new $180 million Diamond Head Tower at the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. The five-story 200,000-square-foot building at 1319 Punahou St. in Honolulu houses an expanded neonatal intensive care unit that, at 40,000 square feet, has 70 private rooms and is five times larger than the previous NICU.
