The camp endured great deals of violence and destruction during the Lebanese civil war. In 1990, a quarter of the camp was either destroyed or severely damaged. Consequently, at least 100 of Dbayeh's principally Christian Palestine refugee families were displaced. Mar Elias refugee camp is the smallest in Lebanon, housing 662 registered refugees. The Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Convent founded the camp in 1952 to accommodate Palestine refugees from the Galilee in northern Palestine.
