Xinjiang province has long been the site of ethnic tensions between the Uighur population and Chinese rule. Amid fears that fanatical Uighurs are aligning with foreign extremists, the state crackdown is fiercer than ever.
"A normal person wouldn't raise a butcher's knife to the elderly and children. Can we still call them human beings?", asks policeman Ainiding Memtimin. In May he was on the scene when a group of extremists threw explosives into a busy Urumqi marketplace, killing 39 people. Pew Research estimates that there were about 3.3 million Muslims of all ages living in the United States in 2015. Muslims comprised about 1 % of the overall U.S. population (about 322 million people in 2015), and they estimate that share will double by 2050.

Rejected by their families and persecuted by society, many transgender people, known as 'waria', end up struggling to survive as sex workers in the cities."Waria have been set alight, shot dead, mutilated", explains Mama Yuli, a campaigner for transgender rights, "but when we go to the police they don't help. They always say it's our fault". The first to graduate from Islamic University and head the Indonesian Waria Communication Forum, Mama Yuli is hoping she can spearhead a change in perception and protect her marginalised community. Mama Shinta runs an Islamist school specifically for waria. She agrees with Mama Yuli, saying that both waria culture and Islamic tradition can coexist. "We have to live with this, whether we like it or not. In the end we have to accept it and accepting that makes us closer to the creator. The one who makes us Waria is Allah."

WRAL-TV Emmy award winning anchor David Crabtree moderated this panel discussion that followed the screening of "Faith, Fear and Freedom" about North Carolina Muslims (http://www.wral.com/wral-documentary-faith-fear-and-freedom/11842897/), and audience members were encouraged to ask questions.
Background: There have been Muslims living in North Carolina for decades. In fact, some of the very first Muslims in NC were African slaves who were brought here in the 18th century.
Today, there are an estimated 26,000 Muslims in North Carolina. That's less than one percent of the state's population, but also reflects a 30 percent increase in the number of Muslims living in NC over just ten years. Some are converts, but most come from other states and other countries.
Panelists included, from left: UNC-Chapel Hill Islamic Studies Professor Carl Ernst; Amna Baloch (local community member born and raised in Raleigh, NC); David Crabtree (WRAL-TV anchor); Director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security (Duke-UNC-RTI) David Schanzer; and Muslim Chaplain at Duke University Abdullah Antepli.
