Plot: This is the first film of Theo Angelopoulos' trilogy. The story starts in 1919 with some greek refugees from Odessa arriving somewhere near Thessaloniki. The refugees build a small village somewhere near a river and we watch as the kids grow up and fall in love. But difficult times of dictatorship and war are coming...

Plot: Aimilia, a young and relatively well-to-do woman, leads a rather schizophrenic existence. Every day, she gives piano lessons to the children at an orphanage, while at night she brings home a series of lovers whom she picks up at random and whom she kills while in a sexual frenzy. The film explains her behavior as the result of a traumatic childhood event when she witnessed her mother being murdered by Paris, the man whom her mother abused and humiliated. Nikos, a criminal hunted by the police, who goes into her house one night to hide a package of money, discovers her secret. The money is destined for "Mother", the mother of his girlfriend Kaiti, who assigns the hit-man Iosif to kill Nikos. The police suspect Aimilia, but she tries to make Nikos appear the real murderer of her victims. The latter visits her to get his money and, miraculously, Aimilia is cured of her murderous mania in his arms. Both of them, however, are murdered by Iosif, who is also killed soon thereafter by the policemen who have the house under surveillance.

Plot: Keti goes to a prison to visit her daughter Elli, a young female prisoner, but Elli refuses to meet her mother. When Keti has left, the prison guard starts reading Elli's diary, to find out what has brought Elli to end up in prison. Elli's problems begin the day her mother gets divorced, and her mother's young lover, Nikos, moves into their apartment. When Nikos tells Elli that he loves her furiously, and just pretends to love her mother, Elli is disgusted. Keti hears Elly screaming at Nikos, intervenes, and slaps Elli in her face. Elli packs her suitcase and leaves. A young man, Kostas, has fallen in love with her, but in vain. Elli is already in love with Yorgos, a guy who exploits women to obtain money from them for his obsessive gambling. After some weeks he is tired of Elli. To be able to rent a room, she starts selling her body to men she meets in restaurants. Kostas turns up, and they spend some lovely weeks together. When Kostas goes to Germany to continue his studies, Elli returns to her mother's home. Alone with Nikos in the apartment, Nikos tries to rape her. Elli gets hold of a paper knife, and stabs Nikos in his stomach. Without witnesses, who could confirm her story, Elli is sentenced to prison for homicide.
