Deutsches Haus at NYU and the Department of German at NYU present a talk by Slavoj Žižek, Global Distinguished Professor of German at NYU, who will speak on “Is Hegel Dead—Or Are We Dead in the Eyes of Hegel? A Hegelian View of the Present Age.”
Introduced by Avital Ronell, Professor of German and Comparative Literature at NYU.
The question we should ask is not: is "Hegel" still alive, is his thought of any use for us today? The true question is: what are we - our global capitalist world - in the eyes of Hegel? What if, from the Hegelian standpoint, we are all dead - in what sense? Wolf Bierman once wrote that, while the spiritualist question is "Is there life after death?" the materialist question is: "Is there life before death?" Are we really alive today, alive in the sense of ecstatic opening which makes life worth living?
Slavoj Žižek, Ph.D., is a senior researcher at the Institute of Sociology, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and a visiting professor at a number of American Universities (Columbia, Princeton, New School for Social Research, New York University, University of Michigan). He obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy in Ljubljana studying Psychoanalysis. He also studied at the University of Paris. Slavoj Zizek is a cultural critic and philosopher who is internationally known for his innovative interpretations of Jacques Lacan. He is the author of The Indivisible Remainder; The Sublime Object of Ideology; The Metastases of Enjoyment; Looking Awry: Jacques Lacan through Popular Culture; The Plague of Fantasies and The Ticklish Subject.
Avital Ronell is a University Professor in the Humanities and in the Departments of German and Comparative Literature at New York University. Her research spans the fields of literary studies, psychoanalysis, feminist philosophy, political philosophy, and ethics. As Jacques Derrida Professor of Philosophy, she also teaches regularly at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Among her recent books are Loser Sons: Politics and Authority (University of Illinois Press, 2012); The Test Drive (University of Illinois Press, 2007); Stupidity (University of Illinois Press, 2003).

Hegel and Marx
In this program, contemporary philosopher Peter Singer discusses rational Hegelian philosophy, and the historicism and organicism at its root. Hegel's theories of absolute idealism and of a dialectic, emphasize history in their development of a model of reality. His concept of this reality as ultimately spiritual, and of philosophy as organic and constantly changing, is examined. The theories of Karl Marx are discussed as essentially Hegelian, but a practical economic spin.

In this lecture/discussion session from my Spring 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we tackle the Introduction to a very challenging philosophical work, Georg William Friedrich Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit.
I lead the students through some of the basic themes discussed in this very dense but short section of Hegel's masterwork, introducing them to some of the key ideas of Hegel's dialectical philosophy, including the nature of consciousness, knowledge as instrument and medium, what he could possibly mean by "the Absolute", what a "Science of Experience of Consciousness" consists in, the progress of the dialectic, and the dead ends of natural consciousness and skepticism.

Surname
A surname or family name is a name added to a given name. In many cases, a surname is a family name and many dictionaries define "surname" as a synonym of "family name". In the western hemisphere, it is commonly synonymous with last name because it is usually placed at the end of a person's given name.
In most Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries, two or more last names (or surnames) may be used. In China, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Madagascar, Taiwan, Vietnam, and parts of India, the family name is placed before a person's given name.
The style of having both a family name (surname) and a given name (forename) is far from universal. In many countries, it is common for ordinary people to have only one name or mononym.
The concept of a "surname" is a relatively recent historical development, evolving from a medieval naming practice called a "byname". Based on an individual's occupation or area of residence, a byname would be used in situations where more than one person had the same name.

Die kühnsten Denkgebäude der Philosophiegeschichte entstanden im Deutschen Idealismus. Der Leitgedanke dabei war, dass der Geist die Welt nicht nur erkennt, sondern in gewisser Weise auch selbst hervorbringt. The question we should ask is not: is "Hegel" still alive, is his thought of any use for us today? The true question is: what are we - our global capitalist world - in the eyes of Hegel? What if, from the Hegelian standpoint, we are all dead - in what sense? Wolf Bierman once wrote that, while the spiritualist question is "Is there life after death?" the materialist question is: "Is there life before death?" Are we really alive today, alive in the sense of ecstatic opening which makes life worth living?
Slavoj Žižek, Ph.D., is a senior researcher at the Institute of Sociology, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and a visiting professor at a number of American Universities (Columbia, Princeton, New School for Social Research, New York University, University of Michigan). He obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy in Ljubljana studying Psychoanalysis. He also studied at the University of Paris. Slavoj Zizek is a cultural critic and philosopher who is internationally known for his innovative interpretations of Jacques Lacan. He is the author of The Indivisible Remainder; The Sublime Object of Ideology; The Metastases of Enjoyment; Looking Awry: Jacques Lacan through Popular Culture; The Plague of Fantasies and The Ticklish Subject.
Avital Ronell is a University Professor in the Humanities and in the Departments of German and Comparative Literature at New York University. Her research spans the fields of literary studies, psychoanalysis, feminist philosophy, political philosophy, and ethics. As Jacques Derrida Professor of Philosophy, she also teaches regularly at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Among her recent books are Loser Sons: Politics and Authority (University of Illinois Press, 2012); The Test Drive (University of Illinois Press, 2007); Stupidity (University of Illinois Press, 2003).

In this lecture/discussion session from my Spring 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we tackle the Introduction to a very challenging philosophical work, Georg William Friedrich Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit.
I lead the students through some of the basic themes discussed in this very dense but short section of Hegel's masterwork, introducing them to some of the key ideas of Hegel's dialectical philosophy, including the nature of consciousness, knowledge as instrument and medium, what he could possibly mean by "the Absolute", what a "Science of Experience of Consciousness" consists in, the progress of the dialectic, and the dead ends of natural consciousness and skepticism.
