Once the living quarters of the royal family, the palace itself was built in the 15th century, and sprawls across 110 acres. The famed Changdeokgung Palace Secret Garden is one of the palace’s primary attractions; when built, it was a royal retreat, inaccessible to commoners. It is now open to the general public.

Huwon Secret Garden is a rear garden at the palace that flows naturally with nature and was used as a place of leisure by members of the royal family. The garden, which has also been known as Bukwon, Geumwon, and Biwon. At 78 acres, the garden takes up about sixty percent of the palace grounds.

Changdeokgung also known as Changdeokgung Palace or Changdeok Palace — is set within a large park in Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It is one of the "Five Grand Palaces" built by the kings of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). In storybooks, ancient palaces would usually be located by a seashore or in an endless green field.
But that's not the case with Changdeokgung Palace, a remarkable structure built centuries ago located in the middle of the now congested heart of Seoul and which was once the home of Korea's royal family.
Amid skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle of urban Seoul, these historic grounds preserve the beauty of traditional Korean architecture, attracting a wide range of visitors both from home and abroad.
"I experienced some tranquility in the very busy part of Seoul actually and I thought 'Wow that's interesting, let's stop by'...and I saw the UNESCO sign so it must be beautiful, that was the reason.
What I think is very beautiful is the very detailed paintings on the roof parts and the layout of the buildings in the nature itself. "
Originally built as a secondary palace after the main Gyeongbokgung Palace, also located in Seoul,... Changdeokgung Palace gently blends into its natural surroundings, thanks to a minimal presence of artificial architectural features, thus preserving the landscape at the foot of Bugaksan Mountain.
That particular virtue is one of the main reasons UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site.
"I live in Busan and this is actually my very first time at Changdeokgung Palace.
I have visited Gyeongbokgung Palace before, and I saw a lot of visitors walking around the castle wearing the Korean traditional clothing, Hanbok .
It looked so graceful and fitting, so I thought I'd do the same and take some pictures while I'm here."
And she's not alone in choosing Hanbok. To wander around the courtyard of Injeongjeon hall, where centuries ago major state affairs such as the coronation of a new king were conducted,... you might think you've traveled back in time to the Joseon era.
The outfit really helps bring visitors closer to this remarkable place. And if nothing else, it makes a great photo opportunity.
Compared to other palaces from the era, Changdeokgung's design and layout are quite unique. Whereas most palaces were rigid and structured, Changdeokgung emphasized harmony with nature. But its most valuable treasure is hidden in the back.
"This is the part that truly differentiates Changdeokgung palace from any other historic site in Korea; the secret garden. Used as a place of leisure by the royal family long ago and nowadays, this secluded peaceful space offers visitors a rendezvous with nature."
At the center of this expansive garden to the north of the palace....is a large pond, called Buyongji. And to the side is a pavilion once used as a library where the king and the government officials studied and discussed politics.
The pavilion has a gate named Eosumun , meaning “The ruler should always put his people first."
As the place where the King contemplated how to rule a nation, it couldn't have a better name.
Changdeokgung Palace is steeped in Korean history. It may be ancient, but the natural beauty conserved in each corner keeps it feeling new and brimming with live.
Representing the modesty of the Joseon-era royals, who respected their people and their surroundings,... Changdeokgung Palace may still have something timeless to teach us today.

Changdeokgung Palace was the second royal villa built following the construction of Gyeongbukgung Palace in 1405. It was the principal palace for many of the Joseon kings and is the most well-preserved of the five remaining royal Joseon palaces. ChangDeokGung Palace Story by Cultural Heritage Administration of Korean
Changdeokgung Palace was the second royal palace built following the construction of Gyeongbukgung Palace in 1405. It was the principal palace for many kings of the Joseon Dynasty, and is the most well-preserved of the five remaining royal Joseon palaces.
Some of the structures inside the palace includes:
- Donhwamun Gate - The main palace gate. Built in 1412, Donhwamun has a two-story pavilion-type wooden structure, and is the largest of all palace gates.
-Geumcheongyo Bridge - Oldest bridge in Seoul. Built 1411.
-Injeongjeon Hall (National Treasure) - the throne hall of Changdeokgung, it was used for major state affairs including the coronation of a new king and receiving foreign envoys.
-Seonjeongjeon Hall - An office for ruling officials, the king held daily meetings with ministers, reported on state affairs and seminars here.
-Huijeongdang Hall - Originally the king's bed chamber, it became his workplace after Seonjeongjeon was deemed too small for conducting routine state affairs. building.
-Daejojeon Hall - Official residence of the queen.
-Juhamnu Pavilion (Kyujanggak) - Royal libraries stood in this area.
-Yeon-gyeongdang Residence - Built in 1827, it was an audience hall modeled after a typical literati house.
Behind the palace lies the Secret Garden - Huwon which was originally constructed for the use of the royal family and palace women. The garden incorporates a lotus pond, pavilions, and landscaped lawns, trees, and flowers.
Changdeokgung was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.
You can visit 4 palaces and Jongmyo Shrine at a discount ticket price of 10,000 won. It is 14,000 won if purchased separately.

History
Changdeokgung was the second palace after Gyeongbokgung which had been established in 1395 as a primary palace. In the midst of strife for the throne between princes and vassals, authority of Gyeongbokgung was deteriorated. King Jeongjong enthroned by Prince Jeong-an (Yi Bang-won, later became King Taejong) moved the capital to Gaegyeong, the one of Goryeo Dynasty, again in 1400 on the pretext of superior geographical features of it, in fact, in order to avert the power struggle. King Taejong (Yi Bang-won) soon taking over the throne returned to Hanseong(present-day Seoul) had a new palace named Changdeokgung instead of Gyeongbokgung because he had killed his half brothers in Gyeongbokgung whose construction was led by Jeong Do-jeon, the king's rival before. Construction of Changdeok Palace began in 1405, and was completed in 1412. King Seonjo expanded the palace grounds by about 500,000 square meters, including Huwon (see below).

But that's not the case with Changdeokgung Palace, a remarkable structure built centuries ago located in the middle of the now congested heart of Seoul and which was once the home of Korea's royal family.
Amid skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle of urban Seoul, these historic grounds preserve the beauty of traditional Korean architecture, attracting a wide range of visitors both from home and abroad.
"I experienced some tranquility in the very busy part of Seoul actually and I thought 'Wow that's interesting, let's stop by'...and I saw the UNESCO sign so it must be beautiful, that was the reason.
What I think is very beautiful is the very detailed paintings on the roof parts and the layout of the buildings in the nature itself. "
Originally built as a secondary palace after the main Gyeongbokgung Palace, also located in Seoul,... Changdeokgung Palace gently blends into its natural surroundings, thanks to a minimal presence of artificial architectural features, thus preserving the landscape at the foot of Bugaksan Mountain.
That particular virtue is one of the main reasons UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site.
"I live in Busan and this is actually my very first time at Changdeokgung Palace.
I have visited Gyeongbokgung Palace before, and I saw a lot of visitors walking around the castle wearing the Korean traditional clothing, Hanbok .
It looked so graceful and fitting, so I thought I'd do the same and take some pictures while I'm here."
And she's not alone in choosing Hanbok. To wander around the courtyard of Injeongjeon hall, where centuries ago major state affairs such as the coronation of a new king were conducted,... you might think you've traveled back in time to the Joseon era.
The outfit really helps bring visitors closer to this remarkable place. And if nothing else, it makes a great photo opportunity.
Compared to other palaces from the era, Changdeokgung's design and layout are quite unique. Whereas most palaces were rigid and structured, Changdeokgung emphasized harmony with nature. But its most valuable treasure is hidden in the back.
"This is the part that truly differentiates Changdeokgung palace from any other historic site in Korea; the secret garden. Used as a place of leisure by the royal family long ago and nowadays, this secluded peaceful space offers visitors a rendezvous with nature."
At the center of this expansive garden to the north of the palace....is a large pond, called Buyongji. And to the side is a pavilion once used as a library where the king and the government officials studied and discussed politics.
The pavilion has a gate named Eosumun , meaning “The ruler should always put his people first."
As the place where the King contemplated how to rule a nation, it couldn't have a better name.
Changdeokgung Palace is steeped in Korean history. It may be ancient, but the natural beauty conserved in each corner keeps it feeling new and brimming with live.
Representing the modesty of the Joseon-era royals, who respected their people and their surroundings,... Changdeokgung Palace may still have something timeless to teach us today.

[UNESCO World Heritage]
Changdeokgung Palace was the second royal villa built following the construction of Gyeongbukgung Palace in 1405. It was the principal palace for many of the Joseon kings and is the most well-preserved of the five remaining royal Joseon palaces. The palace grounds are comprised of a public palace area, a royal family residence building, and the rear garden. Known as a place of rest for the kings, the rear garden boasts a gigantic tree that is over 300 years old, a small pond, and a pavilion.
창덕궁(사적122호)은 1405년 창건되었다. 조선의 5개의 잘 보존된 궁궐 중 하나어며, (성종때부터는) 여러 임금들이 여기서 지내 본궁역할을 하는 궁궐이 됐다. 궁궐은 공적인 공간과, 왕족들이 지내는 건물, 그리고 후원 등이 있다. 왕의 휴식을 위한 공간으로 알려진 후원은 300년이 넘는 수령의 나무들과, 작은 연못 그리고 정자들로 위용을 뽐내고 있다

Changdeokgung Palace was the second royal palace built following the construction of Gyeongbukgung Palace in 1405. It was the principal palace for many kings of the Joseon Dynasty, and is the most well-preserved of the five remaining royal Joseon palaces.
Some of the structures inside the palace includes:
- Donhwamun Gate - The main palace gate. Built in 1412, Donhwamun has a two-story pavilion-type wooden structure, and is the largest of all palace gates.
-Geumcheongyo Bridge - Oldest bridge in Seoul. Built 1411.
-Injeongjeon Hall (National Treasure) - the throne hall of Changdeokgung, it was used for major state affairs including the coronation of a new king and receiving foreign envoys.
-Seonjeongjeon Hall - An office for ruling officials, the king held daily meetings with ministers, reported on state affairs and seminars here.
-Huijeongdang Hall - Originally the king's bed chamber, it became his workplace after Seonjeongjeon was deemed too small for conducting routine state affairs. building.
-Daejojeon Hall - Official residence of the queen.
-Juhamnu Pavilion (Kyujanggak) - Royal libraries stood in this area.
-Yeon-gyeongdang Residence - Built in 1827, it was an audience hall modeled after a typical literati house.
Behind the palace lies the Secret Garden - Huwon which was originally constructed for the use of the royal family and palace women. The garden incorporates a lotus pond, pavilions, and landscaped lawns, trees, and flowers.
Changdeokgung was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.
You can visit 4 palaces and Jongmyo Shrine at a discount ticket price of 10,000 won. It is 14,000 won if purchased separately.

Description of Seoul:

Five Cool Facts About Seoul:
1. Seoul is home to a number of historic sites and monuments. In addition, the Seoul National Capital Area has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are the Changdeokgung Palace Complex, the Hwaseong Fortress, the Jongmyo Shrine and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.

Five Cool Facts About Seoul:
1. Seoul is home to a number of historic sites and monuments. In addition, the Seoul National Capital Area has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are the Changdeokgung Palace Complex, the Hwaseong Fortress, the Jongmyo Shrine and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.
2. The number “4″ is considered extremely unlucky, to the point where most buildings in Seoul do not have a 4th floor.
3. All South Korean roofs are curved at the ends giving the appearance of a smile.
4. South Korean men love makeup, spending close to US$900 million a year, or a quarter of the world’s men’s cosmetics. Up to 20% of the male Korean population is reported to use makeup regularly.
