Fondata, secondo Tucidite, dagli esuli troiani (gli antichi Elimi), Erice sorge arroccata a 750 m. di altezza sul monte omonimo che domina la città di Trapani, offrendo un panorama mozzafiato dell'intera costa da Marsala a Capo San Vito, compreso l'arcipelago delle Egadi con le isole di Favignana, Marettimo e Levanzo. Abitata da Fenici, Greci e Romani fu, per questi ultimi, sacro luogo di culto della "Venere Ericina", la prima dea della mitologia romana a somiglianza della greca Afrodite. Oggi la cittadina conserva quasi intatto il suo impianto urbanistico medievale con monumenti di grande interesse fra i quali la Chiesa Matrice (XIV sec.). Dal panoramico Giardino del Balio, con il normanno Castello Pepoli ristrutturato nel XIX sec., si accede al famoso Castello di Venere (XII sec.) una tipica fortezza medievale a strapiombo sulla vallata, costruito sul luogo dell'antico santuario della dea Ericina. Dal 1963, su iniziativa del grande scienziato trapanese Prof. Antonino Zichichi, Erice è sede del Centro di Cultura Scientifica "Ettore Majorana" che richiama gli studiosi più qualificati del mondo per la trattazione scientifica di problemi che interessano diversi settori: dalla medicina al diritto, dalla storia all'astronomia, dalla filologia alla chimica. Per questo le è stato attribuito l'appellativo di "Città della Scienza".

Un salto nel passato è raggiungere le atmosfere magiche di Erice. "Sulla vetta più alta in cielo una medievale borgata irta di torri. È il piccolo borgo di Erice, dominato una volta dal più famoso tempio della dea più famosa, Venere". Con queste parole ammirate, nel 1952, lo scrittore francese Roger Peyrefitte descriveva la bellezza senza tempo di Erice, cittadina siciliana della provincia di Trapani, abbarbicata su un monte a 750 metri di quota.
Chiamato Monte San Giuliano sino alla fine del secondo conflitto mondiale, il comune prese poi il nome di un personaggio mitico ucciso da Ercole, lo stesso che porta tuttora. Ma il nome non è l'unico aspetto di Erice che rimanda al passato e alla letteratura classica: le origini del paese sono infatti molto antiche, e i Romani lo scelsero come sede di un importante tempio dedicato alla venere Ericina, lasciando numerose testimonianze del loro passaggio.
Se si considerano le frazioni della periferia, l'intero territorio comunale conta quasi 29 mila abitanti, mentre l'Erice più antica, quella fatta di torri e mura arrampicate alla roccia, contiene appena trecento persone. Nella stagione estiva, tuttavia, la popolazione aumenta di circa dieci volte, grazie all'enorme successo delle bellezze storiche e paesaggistiche locali.
Anche il clima, a dire il vero, contribuisce ad attirare numerosi turisti: di tipo mediterraneo, accarezzato da una brezza dolce che mitiga l'estate e caratterizzato da temperature sempre piacevoli, anche nei mesi invernali, anche se rispetto alla costa è da considerare un raffreddamento per il fattore altitudine, visto che Erice si trova a più di 750 m di altitudine.
Le condizioni favorevoli consentono di passeggiare per le vie di Erice con calma, godendo appieno delle sorprese che il cuore medievale riserva. Già le antiche mura, che abbracciano le viuzze strette e tortuose del centro, suscitano stupore e pretendono rispetto per la loro imponenza, superate in maestosità soltanto dal Castello Normanno. Edificato in epoca normanna sui resti del famoso Tempio di Venere, il maniero è austero e essenziale all'esterno, mentre custodisce nelle sale interne numerosi affreschi e gli arredamenti originali del tempo.
Erice offre una cucina genuina e ricca di specialità prelibate. Il dolce tipico della zona è il Genovese alla crema, fatto di pastafrolla e spolverato di zucchero a velo, talvolta farcito di ricotta, a cui si aggiungono i Mustaccioli, i biscotti che sin dai tempi antichi vengono preparati a mano nei conventi di clausura.

"A Erice" è il singolo che anticipa l'uscita del prossimo album di Jaka "Forza Originaria". Il brano scritto in dialetto siciliano racconta l'impossibile storia d'amore tra un ragazzo di quartiere e una ragazza dell'alta società .
Il brano è una produzione del JakaLion Management etichetta di produzioni musicali e organizzazione eventi, in collaborazione con Macro Marco della Macro Beats che ha prodotto il riddim suonato dalla Roots in the Sky Band.

Erice (Italian pronunciation: [ˈɛːritʃe]; Sicilian: Èrici ) is a historic town and comune in the province of Trapani in Sicily, Italy.
Geography
Erice is located on top of Mount Erice, at around 750 metres (2,460 ft) above sea level, overlooking the city of Trapani, the low western coast towards Marsala, the dramatic Punta del Saraceno and Capo San Vito to the north-east, and the Aegadian Islands on Sicily's north-western coast, providing spectacular views.
The bordering municipalities are Buseto Palizzolo, Paceco, Trapani, Valderice and Custonaci. The hamlets (frazioni) are Ballata, Casa Santa, Crocefissello, Napola, Pizzolungo, Rigaletta, San Cusumano and Torretta.
History
The ancient Greek name of Erice was Eryx (Έρυξ in Greek), and its foundation was associated with the eponymous Greek hero Eryx. It was not a Greek colony, as the Phoenicians founded it, but was largely Hellenized. It was destroyed in the First Punic War by the Carthaginians, and from then on declined in importance.
Eryx was conquered by Aghlebids in 831 and was renamed as Cebel Hamid (In Western sources Gebel Hamed, meaning Mountain of Hamid). It was ruled by Arabs until the Norman conquest. In 1167 the Normans renamed it Monte San Giuliano. It was known as Monte San Giuliano until 1934.

Fondata, secondo Tucidite, dagli esuli troiani (gli antichi Elimi), Erice sorge arroccata a 750 m. di altezza sul monte omonimo che domina la città di Trapani, offrendo un panorama mozzafiato dell'intera costa da Marsala a Capo San Vito, compreso l'arcipelago delle Egadi con le isole di Favignana, Marettimo e Levanzo. Abitata da Fenici, Greci e Romani fu, per questi ultimi, sacro luogo di culto della "Venere Ericina", la prima dea della mitologia romana a somiglianza della greca Afrodite. Oggi la cittadina conserva quasi intatto il suo impianto urbanistico medievale con monumenti di grande interesse fra i quali la Chiesa Matrice (XIV sec.). Dal panoramico Giardino del Balio, con il normanno Castello Pepoli ristrutturato nel XIX sec., si accede al famoso Castello di Venere (XII sec.) una tipica fortezza medievale a strapiombo sulla vallata, costruito sul luogo dell'antico santuario della dea Ericina. Dal 1963, su iniziativa del grande scienziato trapanese Prof. Antonino Zichichi, Erice è sede del Centro di Cultura Scientifica "Ettore Majorana" che richiama gli studiosi più qualificati del mondo per la trattazione scientifica di problemi che interessano diversi settori: dalla medicina al diritto, dalla storia all'astronomia, dalla filologia alla chimica. Un salto nel passato è raggiungere le atmosfere magiche di Erice. "Sulla vetta più alta in cielo una medievale borgata irta di torri. È il piccolo borgo di Erice, dominato una volta dal più famoso tempio della dea più famosa, Venere". Con queste parole ammirate, nel 1952, lo scrittore francese Roger Peyrefitte descriveva la bellezza senza tempo di Erice, cittadina siciliana della provincia di Trapani, abbarbicata su un monte a 750 metri di quota.
Chiamato Monte San Giuliano sino alla fine del secondo conflitto mondiale, il comune prese poi il nome di un personaggio mitico ucciso da Ercole, lo stesso che porta tuttora. Ma il nome non è l'unico aspetto di Erice che rimanda al passato e alla letteratura classica: le origini del paese sono infatti molto antiche, e i Romani lo scelsero come sede di un importante tempio dedicato alla venere Ericina, lasciando numerose testimonianze del loro passaggio.
Se si considerano le frazioni della periferia, l'intero territorio comunale conta quasi 29 mila abitanti, mentre l'Erice più antica, quella fatta di torri e mura arrampicate alla roccia, contiene appena trecento persone. Nella stagione estiva, tuttavia, la popolazione aumenta di circa dieci volte, grazie all'enorme successo delle bellezze storiche e paesaggistiche locali.
Anche il clima, a dire il vero, contribuisce ad attirare numerosi turisti: di tipo mediterraneo, accarezzato da una brezza dolce che mitiga l'estate e caratterizzato da temperature sempre piacevoli, anche nei mesi invernali, anche se rispetto alla costa è da considerare un raffreddamento per il fattore altitudine, visto che Erice si trova a più di 750 m di altitudine.
Le condizioni favorevoli consentono di passeggiare per le vie di Erice con calma, godendo appieno delle sorprese che il cuore medievale riserva. Già le antiche mura, che abbracciano le viuzze strette e tortuose del centro, suscitano stupore e pretendono rispetto per la loro imponenza, superate in maestosità soltanto dal Castello Normanno. Edificato in epoca normanna sui resti del famoso Tempio di Venere, il maniero è austero e essenziale all'esterno, mentre custodisce nelle sale interne numerosi affreschi e gli arredamenti originali del tempo.
Erice offre una cucina genuina e ricca di specialità prelibate. Il dolce tipico della zona è il Genovese alla crema, fatto di pastafrolla e spolverato di zucchero a velo, talvolta farcito di ricotta, a cui si aggiungono i Mustaccioli, i biscotti che sin dai tempi antichi vengono preparati a mano nei conventi di clausura.

The ancient name of Erice was Eryx, and its foundation was associated with the eponymous Greek hero Eryx. It was not a Greek colony, but was largely Hellenized. It was destroyed in the First Punic War by the Carthaginians, and from then on declined in importance.
Eryx was conquered by Aghlebids in 831 and was renamed as Cebel Hamid (In Western sources Gebel Hamed, meaning Mountain of Hamid). It was ruled by Arabs over 3 centuries until Norman conquest in 1167. Normans renamed it Monte San Giuliano. It was known as Monte San Giuliano until 1934. This footage includes the architecture, streets, squares, shops, churches, steps and restaurants of Erice.

Visit Erice in Sicily
Trapani, a town founded by the Punic, used to be the harbor of Eryx. The location of which is nice and is called Erice today. It had an important role in the antiquity. The pharaohs of the town built on top of the mountain at 750 meters, was an important point of orientation for shipment sailing around Sicily.
We can often watch the mountain tops attracting the clouds as if they use them as a blanket. In artichoke, we can watch this close-up. There's often fog and rain, and clouds covering the sky above the town. What can we do while it's raining? Let's sit in the famous confectionary, eat a cake with almonds and marzipan or a lemon pie. Sicilian cakes, especially the ones with almonds are well-known and delicious. We can drink a cup of good cappuccino, maybe the strongest and tastiest anywhere. Or let's read the "Sweet Life in Italy" by Frances Mayes who was in love with Italy. By the time we finish the chapter about Erice, it has stopped raining and the sun is shining again.
The Citadel Castelo Normano may have been built on the former site of the sanctuary partly from its stones. Actually, there are two medieval fortresses here; Castelo Populi and Castello Venera. Today, it's impossible to day where one of them ends and the other begins. In clear weather, there's a good view of the fortress and the parking lot in the distance. We can see the [Foreign Language] Grande and the [Foreign Language] Mountains towards the inside of the island on the coast to Sciacca and in the sea to the nearby Egadi Islands and Pantelleria further away.
Today, Erice is a frequent destination for excursions, reachable by car or cable car from Trapani. The town surrounded by walls is not very big; but, its alleys are so zigzagged that it's easy to get lost.
Erice considers Garibaldi to be its own hero visible by the memorial tablet placed on the wall of the town hall. Let's read how the hero of the war of independence is described by Fred Mustard Stewart in his novel. "All in all he had a pleasant face with his famous grizzled-red beard. Thousands of women dreamt about him all over the world reading the story of his famous love with Anita de Silva which was loved at first sight and she had fought in South America and Italy in his side before she died tragically soon".
The neighborhood is famous for its salt furnaces. Boat men and tuna fishermen, if it isn't fishing season take us gladly from the harbor of Trapani to the Egadi Islands. In one of Levanzo's caves, we can even see ancient drawings on the rocks. In his book, they found Adesea, Aaron the Bradford thought he had found Goat Island about which Romeros was writing on Favignana Island, one of these groups of islands. Archaeologist excavated a Venus sanctuary as well which was built in the 6th century B.C in honor of the Goddess of Fertility.
