This as gang-related violence continues to claim lives in this Johannesburg surburb. There's been a spate of shootings in recent weeks - believed to be gang- ordered hits. This weekend a man was shot, while another one died in hospital.

Back in the Eighties i made several visits to the Wiltshire hot spot of Westbury and on 10th September 1986 captured the following sequences with my faithful old Philips VHS Camera. 50013 arrives with an up train from Penzance bound for London Paddington with MK I buffet car in the rake as 56001 runs around LE a class 33 arrives with a Cardiff to Portsmouth Harbour service. Soon after the departure the service from Portsmouth arrives with the distinctive 33008 in charge. Coming off the Salisbury route 47369 arrives for a crew change and the train is then shunted back into the up yard while an HST set with power car 43145 leading calls on a London to West Country service. Another service for Portsmouth arrives and departs with 33025 "Sultan" providing the power. A little after the new class 59 number 59003 "Yeoman Highlander" comes off the "Berks and Hants" line with an empty stone train for Merehead Quarry. 56048 makes a rapid departure and we end our brief visit with 56031 drifting through the station. I hope this evokes fond memories for the maybe older generation and for the younger ones too.

Westbury - a Place of Dreams -dokumentin ensi-ilta oli Tampereen elokuvajuhlilla 7.3.2015. Dokumenttielokuva on työstetty osana Suomen lasten ja nuorten säätiön globaalikasvatushanketta. Neljä suomalaista nuorta ja mediapedagogi Kalle Raittila viettivät kaksi viikkoa elokuussa 2014 Johannesburgissa sijaitsevassa Westburyn nuorisokeskuksessa. Eteläafrikkalais-suomalaiselle nuorten ryhmälle annettiin työskentelyn suhteen vapaat kädet. Ainoa ohjeistus oli, että yhteistyönä kuvattavan materiaalin keskiössä tulee olla nuorten omakohtaiset elämäntarinat.
Lähiön köyhyys ja toisaalta rikkaiden asuinalueiden korkeiden muurien takana varjeltu yltäkylläisyys haastoivat nuoret pohtimaan eriarvoisuuden vähentämisen tärkeyttä. Eteläafrikkalaisten elämäntarinat kiehtoivat nuoria, ja he halusivat keskittyä ihmisten haastattelemiseen ja alueen kehityksen kuvaamiseen. Haastatteluissa muun muassa jengeistä ja huumeista turvaa hakeneet nuoret kertoivat, miten he ovat löytäneet elämälleen uuden suunnan. Nuorten mielestä vaikuttavinta antia olivat köyhyyden ja toivottomuuden keskeltä nousseet positiiviset selviytymistarinat, joita ihmiset halusivat heille jakaa.
Matkan jälkeen elokuvatuotantoon osallistuneista nuorista on koulutettu vertaisvaikuttajia ja he ovat kertoneet kokemuksistaan suomalaisille nuorille mm. kymppiluokilla, työttömien nuorten työpajoissa, lastenkodeissa sekä erityisluokilla. Toiminnan tavoitteena on ollut sekä lisätä tietoa erityisesti nuoria koskettavista kehitysyhteistyökysymyksistä että halua toimia globaalien haasteiden ratkaisemiseksi.
Globaalikasvatushanke on ulkoasiainministeriön rahoittama ja sen tärkeimpiä yhteistyökumppaneita ovat: Satakunnan elävän kuvan keskus, Pirkanmaan elokuvakeskus, Suomi-Etelä-Afrikka seura, Tampereen elokuvajuhlat ry, Khulisa Social Solutions ja Westburyn nuorisokeskus Etelä-Afrikassa.

"A 400ft (122m-high) industrial chimney that has dominated the Wiltshire skyline for decades is to be demolished in September, it has been announced.
The Westbury cement works were constructed in the early 1960s and mothballed in 2009.
The chimney will be "brought down by controlled explosion" on 18 September at about 06:45 BST, site owners Tarmac said.
The demolition marks the end of over 40 years of cement production at the site.
Jonathan Toyn, from the company, said spectators were being asked to watch the demolition from the White Horse viewing area "rather than watching from nearby footpaths or farmers' fields".
"The White Horse viewing area gives an outstanding view of the whole site and the community will be able to see this much anticipated event safely at a distance," he said.
"The area will also be the only location where Tarmac will provide people with a count-down to the moment of the demolition so they do not miss the spectacular event."
The chimney is just short of the height of the spire at Salisbury Cathedral, which stands at 123m-high (404ft) above ground level.
The cement works are about 1.6km (1 mile) to the north east of Westbury."

Back in the Eighties i made several visits to the Wiltshire hot spot of Westbury and on 10th September 1986 captured the following sequences with my faithful old Philips VHS Camera. 50013 arrives with an up train from Penzance bound for London Paddington with MK I buffet car in the rake as 56001 runs around LE a class 33 arrives with a Cardiff to Portsmouth Harbour service. Soon after the departure the service from Portsmouth arrives with the distinctive 33008 in charge. Coming off the Salisbury route 47369 arrives for a crew change and the train is then shunted back into the up yard while an HST set with power car 43145 leading calls on a London to West Country service. Another service for Portsmouth arrives and departs with 33025 "Sultan" providing the power. A little after the new class 59 number 59003 "Yeoman Highlander" comes off the "Berks and Hants" line with an empty stone train for Merehead Quarry. 56048 makes a rapid departure and we end our brief visit with 56031 drifting through the station. I hope this evokes fond memories for the maybe older generation and for the younger ones too.

Westbury - a Place of Dreams -dokumentin ensi-ilta oli Tampereen elokuvajuhlilla 7.3.2015. Dokumenttielokuva on työstetty osana Suomen lasten ja nuorten säätiön globaalikasvatushanketta. Neljä suomalaista nuorta ja mediapedagogi Kalle Raittila viettivät kaksi viikkoa elokuussa 2014 Johannesburgissa sijaitsevassa Westburyn nuorisokeskuksessa. Eteläafrikkalais-suomalaiselle nuorten ryhmälle annettiin työskentelyn suhteen vapaat kädet. Ainoa ohjeistus oli, että yhteistyönä kuvattavan materiaalin keskiössä tulee olla nuorten omakohtaiset elämäntarinat.
Lähiön köyhyys ja toisaalta rikkaiden asuinalueiden korkeiden muurien takana varjeltu yltäkylläisyys haastoivat nuoret pohtimaan eriarvoisuuden vähentämisen tärkeyttä. Eteläafrikkalaisten elämäntarinat kiehtoivat nuoria, ja he halusivat keskittyä ihmisten haastattelemiseen ja alueen kehityksen kuvaamiseen. Haastatteluissa muun muassa jengeistä ja huumeista turvaa hakeneet nuoret kertoivat, miten he ovat löytäneet elämälleen uuden suunnan. Nuorten mielestä vaikuttavinta antia olivat köyhyyden ja toivottomuuden keskeltä nousseet positiiviset selviytymistarinat, joita ihmiset halusivat heille jakaa.
Matkan jälkeen elokuvatuotantoon osallistuneista nuorista on koulutettu vertaisvaikuttajia ja he ovat kertoneet kokemuksistaan suomalaisille nuorille mm. kymppiluokilla, työttömien nuorten työpajoissa, lastenkodeissa sekä erityisluokilla. Toiminnan tavoitteena on ollut sekä lisätä tietoa erityisesti nuoria koskettavista kehitysyhteistyökysymyksistä että halua toimia globaalien haasteiden ratkaisemiseksi.
Globaalikasvatushanke on ulkoasiainministeriön rahoittama ja sen tärkeimpiä yhteistyökumppaneita ovat: Satakunnan elävän kuvan keskus, Pirkanmaan elokuvakeskus, Suomi-Etelä-Afrikka seura, Tampereen elokuvajuhlat ry, Khulisa Social Solutions ja Westburyn nuorisokeskus Etelä-Afrikassa.

"A 400ft (122m-high) industrial chimney that has dominated the Wiltshire skyline for decades is to be demolished in September, it has been announced.
The Westbury cement works were constructed in the early 1960s and mothballed in 2009.
The chimney will be "brought down by controlled explosion" on 18 September at about 06:45 BST, site owners Tarmac said.
The demolition marks the end of over 40 years of cement production at the site.
Jonathan Toyn, from the company, said spectators were being asked to watch the demolition from the White Horse viewing area "rather than watching from nearby footpaths or farmers' fields".
"The White Horse viewing area gives an outstanding view of the whole site and the community will be able to see this much anticipated event safely at a distance," he said.
"The area will also be the only location where Tarmac will provide people with a count-down to the moment of the demolition so they do not miss the spectacular event."
The chimney is just short of the height of the spire at Salisbury Cathedral, which stands at 123m-high (404ft) above ground level.
The cement works are about 1.6km (1 mile) to the north east of Westbury."
