Princess Alexandra Hospital

The Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) is on Ipswich Road in Woolloongabba, Australia. It is one of the major hospitals in Brisbane and is a teaching hospital of the University of Queensland. It is a tertiary level teaching hospital with all major medical and surgical specialities onsite except for obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics. It has a catchment population of 1.6 million people with 780 beds and 5800 full-time equivalent staff. In 2005, the hospital received Magnet Recognition.

History

The hospital is built on the site of the 1883 Diamantina Orphanage, named after Diamantina Bowen, wife of the first Governor of Queensland. In 1901, it became Diamantina Hospital for Chronic Diseases. In 1943, it became the South Brisbane Auxiliary Hospital and then the South Brisbane Hospital in 1956.

In 1959 it became the Princess Alexandra Hospital and was opened by and named after HRH Princess Alexandra of Australia in 1959, to mark the Centennial of Queensland. In 2000, a new building was opened to replace the ageing red-brick hospital complex built in the 1950s.

The Trust predicts a deficit of £16.6m in 2013-14. It abandoned plans to become a Foundation Trust in April 2015 and plans to become an integrated care organisation, investigating both “horizontal” and “vertical” integration with other health bodies.

Alexandra Hospital

Alexandra Hospital (Abbreviation: AH; Chinese: 亚历山大医院) is a 400-bed hospital located in the south-western part of Singapore. History

Established in 1938, the hospital served as the principal hospital for the British in the Far East and was known as the British Military Hospital. During the Battle of Singapore in February 1942, the hospital was the scene of a massacre by Japanese soldiers of the wounded British and some of the medical staff. After World War II Alexandra Hospital remained as one of the most modern hospitals in Singapore right to the 1970s.

Services in Kidderminster and Redditch have been under threat for many years. Proposals to downgrade Kidderminster hospital provoked the establishment of Independent Community and Health Concern. Their candidate Dr Richard Taylor defeated David Lock the sitting Labour MP in the 2001 General Election. The building of the new Treatment Centre, in Kidderminster was handled by Durrow healthcare consultancy.

In November 2013 further proposals to reduce services in Redditch were opposed by Redditch, Bromsgrove and Stratford councils who claimed "The removal of services from Redditch will leave what is already a vulnerable society, with the worst accessibility to health services in the region, and will introduce substantial inequalities with the populations of Redditch, Bromsgrove, Studley, Alcester and neighbouring areas being significantly worse off than all other areas in Worcestershire."
