Nanded district (Marathi: नांदेड जिल्हा) is a district of Maharashtra state in central India. The city of Nanded is the district headquarters.
The district has an area of 10,502 km² while according to 2011 census its population is 3,361,292 of which 27.19% were urban. The Godavari River flows through the district.
Nanded District lies in the eastern portion of Marathwada region, which corresponds to Aurangabad Division of Maharashtra. The district is bounded by Nizamabad, Medak and Adilabad districts of Telangana on the east, by Bidar District of Karnataka falls on the south, by Parbhani and Latur districts of Marathwada on the west, and Yavatmal District of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region on the north. The influence of Telangana, Karnataka and Vidarbha can be seen on the language, behaviour and general conduct of the people of Nanded.

Nanded is the city in Maharashtra state of India. Nanded is 8th largest Urban agglomeration of Maharashtra. It is also headquarters of Nanded district and second largest city in Marathwada region after Aurangabad. One of the oldest and historic cities in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, Nanded is situated on the north bank of the Godavari River. The Nanda dynasty ruled over Nanded for generations in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE. Nanded was also part of the Maurya Empire under Ashoka (c. 272 to 231 BCE). Nanded District is located in the southeastern part of Maharashtra, Bordering Telangana. The name Nanded is widely believed to have originated from "NANDI" the Vahan of Lord Shiva, who performed penance on the banks (TAT) of River Godavari. This "NANDI TAT" became NANDED. Today, Nanded gains prominence from the Sikh Gurdwara which is erected at the place where Guru Gobind Singh, the last Sikh Guru, died in 1708.

Nanded is famous for many Sikh Shrines and Mosques and the religious energy and hues of the town attract several hundred pilgrims and tourists every day. Not just that, Nanded is known to have several eminent Hindu Temples as well. It is said that Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth guru of the Sikhs settled into Nanded as his final residence and proclaimed himself the last Guru of the Sikhs. Thereon, he established the holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, as the sole code of life for all Sikhs. Some other famous religious destinations in Nanded are the Kandhar Dargah and the Masjid of Biholi along with the Aundha Nagnath Temple and Hottal Temple.
