Mahim is a neighbourhood in Mumbai. The Mahim railway station is located in Mahim area, on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Western Railway (India) railway line. In ancient times, the area was known as Maijim, Mejambu, Mahikawati.
Mahim was one of the seven islands that originally made up Mumbai. Mahim, or Mahikawati as it was known, was the capital of Raja Bhimdev, who reigned over the region in the 13th century. He built a palace and a court of justice in Prabhadevi, as well as the first Babulnath temple.
In 1343, this island was possessed by the Muslims of Gujarat. It was in their reign that the old Mahim mosque was built. A dargah of Makhtum Fakir Ali Paru was built here in 1431.
In 1543, the Portuguese captured the islands of Mumbai. In 1662, these islands were given to the English King, King Charles II, as a part of the wedding dowry for the Portuguese princess, Catherine of Braganza. After British acquired Mumbai, they built the Mahim Fort here in order to protect themselves from the Portuguese. The fort today stands in ruins.

The Mahim Fort (Marathi: माहीम किल्ला) is a fort in Mahim in Mumbai, Maharashtra state, India. Strategically located in the Mahim Bay, the fort overlooks Worli to the south, Bandra to the north, and Mahim to the east. The origins of the fort are unclear, but it occupies a strategic location that has been frequently contested. The fort is currently in disrepair, suffering from administrative neglect, encroachment of slums, and exposure to tidal erosion.
In 1516, Portuguese commander Dom Joao de Monoy entered the Mahim Creek and defeated the commander of Mahim fort. The fort was the site of frequent skirmishes between the Portuguese and the Ali Shah, a Gujarati ruler, before the island of Mahim was appropriated from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat by the Portuguese in 1534. In 1661, the Portuguese ceded the island of Mahim as dowry to Charles II of England. After the English gained control of the fort, it was strengthened by Sir Thomas Grantham in 1684, and became a strategic watchtower against possible Portuguese attacks, and later from the Marathas.

The Greek merchant Cosmas Indicopleustes is known to have visited the areas around Bassein in the sixth century, and the Chinese traveller Xuanzang later on June or July 640 CE. According to Historian Joseph Gerson Da Cunha, during this time, Bassein and its surrounding areas appeared to have been ruled by the Chalukya dynasty of Karnataka. Until the 11th century, several Arabian geographers had mentioned references to towns nearby Bassein, like Thana and Sopara, but no references had been made to Bassein. Bassein was later ruled by the Silhara dynasty of Konkan, and eventually passed to the Yadavas of Devagiri, before being conquered by the Muslim rulers of Gujarat.
The Portuguese first reached the west coast of India when the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed at Calicut in 1498. For several years after their arrival in India, they had been consolidating their power in north Konkan. They had established a strong foothold in Goa, which they captured from the Sultan of Bijapur in 1510. According to Historian Faria y Souza, the coast of Bassein was first visited by the Portuguese in 1509, when Francisco de Almeida on his way to Diu captured a Mohammedan ship in the harbour of Bombay, with 24 Moors belonging to Gujarat. At the time, the cession of Mumbai (or Bombay) was of minor importance - but retroactively it gained a crucial importance when the place passed from the Portuguese to the English in 1661 as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza, and became a major trade center - making this the treaty's most important long-range result.
Portuguese mariners exploring the north Konkan Coast, discovered the Arab Sultanate of Khambat or Cambay, building or renovating or expanding the fort in the early 1400s and attacked it in a failed effort to seize it. Later, after more systematic efforts, the Sultanate of Cambay ceded the fort to Portugal by the Treaty of Saint Matthew signed on the Portuguese brig Sao Matteus anchored in the Bhayander Creek or Vasai Harbor.
The Treaty of Bassein was signed by Sultan Bahadur of Gujarat and the Kingdom of Portugal on 23 December 1534 while on board the galleon São Mateus. Based on the terms of the agreement, the Portuguese Empire gained control of the city of Bassein, as well as its territories, islands, and seas. The Mumbai Islands under Portuguese control include Colaba, Old Woman's Island, Mumbai, Mazagaon, Worli, Matunga, and Mahim. Salsette, Daman and Diu, Thane, Kalyan, and Chaul were other territories controlled and settled by the Portuguese.

Welcome to Band Stand. Band Stand is one of the most popular hangout areas of Mumbai. This one kilometer long strip next to the sea is located to the west of Bandra, which is also known as the queen of Mumbai suburbs. Band Stand begins at Saint Andrew's Church which was built in 1575 A.D. Perhaps the most popular tourist attraction here is Mannat, Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Kahn's mansion. The fort-like walls make the man and his abode all the more intriguing. For the hip crowd, joints like Barista and Cafe Coffee Day are the order of the day. But there is however nothing quite like the bhell puri, or coconut water, off the roads to get the real taste of Mumbai. Or you can also buy this paper cone filled with peanuts and then go sit on the rocks and watch the sunset. Bandra is also very health conscious. That is why we have a dedicated jogger's park right here. If you come to Jogger's Park in the morning, besides the usual walkers and joggers, you will also see yoga groups and Laughter Club members working out very diligently.
But no visit to Band Stand is complete without a look at the Bandra Fort. This fort was built in the 17th century by the Portuguese, and was called Castella de Aguada, which means 'a fort by the sea'. The Bandra Fort was used as an observation tower by sentinels to keep a watch over the Mahim Bay. Bandra Fort ruins provide the much needed privacy for lovers seeking intimate moments. However, Band Stand has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently. The moral police have been coming down rather very heavily on couples who have been doing a little more than just holding hands. And if you are lucky enough, you may also get to witness various cultural events that take place here every now and then. I am Premjit Singh, showing you Mumbai.

It might surprise some people that South Mumbai is doted with Quaint Irani joints, which are known as Iranian restaurants. And these restaurants serve Parsi food. The Parsi community or the Zoroastrians, they came to India from Iran a few centuries back. The most popular among these Parsi restaurants is this, the Britannia, located at Ballard estate. This building was designed by George Wittet, the architect of the Gateway of India amongst others. The heritage of this building is very apparent and the interiors make it even more quaint.
The restaurant itself is about a century old. It is run by the Kohinoor family of the Parsi community. They have a simple philosophy that there is no love greater than the love of eating. "Britannia Restaurant has been in existence from 1923. When I was born my father started the restaurant". The late Mrs. Kohinoor's Berry Pulao is exclusive to this restaurant. Now the berries are imported all the way from Iran and they are cooked with long green basmati rice with marinated meat, and then garnished with fried onions and dry fruits. It is an entire meal in itself and the recipe is a well guarded secret.
"And this berry, my wife brought the recipe from Iran. Here she has improvised by adding a little special masala and kabab. And next comes the Khansak, the Sali Boti. Khansak, which is chicken or mutton served with brown rice and lentils. Or you could try the Sali Boti. Now, boti is mutton served with gravy and is garnished with thin fries. This goes very well with Indian bread or roti.
Britannia also has some seafood option, you could try the Bomil fry or the fried Bombay duck and also the patrani-mach. "Patrani Machi, in Parsi language, 'patra' means leaf. And now this pomphret fish is cut into big pieces and they are wrapped in banana leaves. There are chutney added to that, and then they are wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. So this becomes Patrani Machi".
You can also ask for some raspberry soda to complement your meal, but make sure you leave some space in your tummy for some home-made Caramel Custard. "During World War II, these premises were requisitioned by British Army. So, in 1947 when I got back the place, I just painted it plain. We did not habe money to spend for that type of ambience and renovation". I am Premjit showing you Mumbai. "We are all working in unity to keep the tradition going".
