Deep-sea anglerfish are strange and elusive creatures that are very rarely observed in their natural habitat. Fewer than half a dozen have ever been captured on film or video by deep diving research vehicles. This little angler, about 9 cm long, is named Melanocetus. It is also known as the Black Seadevil and it lives in the deep dark waters of the Monterey Canyon. MBARI's ROV Doc Ricketts observed this anglerfish for the first time at 600 m on a midwater research expedition in November 2014. We believe that this is the first video footage ever made of this species alive and at depth.

However, the specimen was so rare they didn't want to cut it open to identify its last meal. Now, using micro-CT scanners, the Museum's imaging experts have finally been able to solve the mystery.

Anglerfish
Anglerfishes are fish of the teleost order Lophiiformes /ˌlɒfiːəˈfɔːrmiːz/. They are bony fish named for their characteristic mode of predation, in which a fleshy growth from the fish's head (the esca or illicium) acts as a lure.
Some anglerfish are also notable for extreme sexual dimorphism and sexual parasitism of the small male on the much larger female, seen in the suborder Ceratioidei. In these species, males may be several orders of magnitude smaller than females.
Anglerfish occur worldwide. Some are pelagic, while others are benthic; some live in the deep sea (e.g., Ceratiidae), while others on the continental shelf (e.g., the frogfishes Antennariidae and the monkfish/goosefish Lophiidae). Pelagic forms are most laterally compressed, whereas the benthic forms are often extremely dorsoventrally compressed (depressed), often with large upward-pointing mouths.
Evolution
A mitochondrial genome phylogenetic study suggested the anglerfishes diversified in a short period of the early to mid-Cretaceous, between 130 and 100 million years ago.

Deep-sea anglerfish are strange and elusive creatures that are very rarely observed in their natural habitat. Fewer than half a dozen have ever been captured on film or video by deep diving research vehicles. This little angler, about 9 cm long, is named Melanocetus. It is also known as the Black Seadevil and it lives in the deep dark waters of the Monterey Canyon. MBARI's ROV Doc Ricketts observed this anglerfish for the first time at 600 m on a midwater research expedition in November 2014. We believe that this is the first video footage ever made of this species alive and at depth.

A deep dive into “Fish Out of Water,” whose inspirations include both Looney Toons and Lost in Translation. A tiny cartoon seahorse grips a stallion’s hand. Together, wordlessly, they topple around the ocean through kelp and convenience stores, bop around factories manned by fish, and explore the dark alien depths of the deep sea. It’s very beautiful and incredibly weird. It’s BoJack Horseman ... Still ... the lighting ... We need an anglerfish ... ....

Not that tradition is ever a major mark against you in a metroidvania, the action-adventure genre built of back-tracking and gear-gating, puzzles and boss battles, that plays out across a single complex environment ... electrical jellies swarming and multiplying, armoured crabs with hidden weak spots, splay-toothed anglerfish - a fish so monstrously unlovable that it looks like it came from D&D;'s Monster Manual in the first place ... ....

Here there are none of the dangerous sharks, anglerfish and jellyfish we saw in the predecessor ... 'FINDING DORY'....
