2nd stage of ankle strapping - the stirrup

When we do an ankle strapping we're looking at the different stages of how we want to give support. The first stage of support, which we've done already, is the figure of eight, so imagine that there's a figure of eight on here. I've taken it off so that you can see me strapping the stirrups so you'd have a figure of eight first and then you would do the stirrup strapping. We're looking at the principles of taping where we've got have an anchor and then we've got to think what type of structures are we trying to support so here we tried to protect the outside ankle ligaments, the lateral ligament complex, so, we've got to make sure that that's where our tape goes. We're going to put an anchor around the top, now this, like all anchors, has absolutely no tension on it at all and literally is laying on to the top of the skin. I'm then going to get a strip of tape that's the right length that's going to go underneath the ankle and then I'm going to place from the inside of the ankle on the anchor I'm going to come down over the bony bit underneath the heel with no tension on it at all. This is where the tension comes in. I'm now going to push the foot upwards and I'm going to lay it onto there like so, the tension is on the side now we ask the patient if they can try and keep their foot in that position for me. I'm then going to put one slightly ahead of that and again I'm going to rip it, and I'm now going to push it into position. I'm also going to need one behind that a little bit so I'm going to go to the back part of that bony part on the inside up the back part of there, rip it, push it up a little bit and do that that's my stirrup and now before I lose any tension. I'm going to put another anchor around the top and that is now fixed in position what movement that protects or supports is that movement there which we call Talar Tilt and what that is is the ligaments here stop that. So it's not going to prevent any movement there, it's not going to prevent any movement there it's going to prevent that movement when you're turning the foot in and what will happen is the the tape will go really tight and the muscles on the outside of the lower part of the leg switch on to try and protect your ankle. http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/sport-injuries/ankle-achilles-shin-pain/sprained-ankle
