1. Lithuania is the geographical center of Europe. After a re-estimation of the boundaries of the continent of Europe in 1989, Jean-George Affholder, a scientist at French National Geographic Institute determined that the geographic centre of Europe is located at 54°54′N 25°19′E, near the village of Purnuškės. The method used for calculating this point was that of the centre of gravity of the geometrical figure of Europe.
2. Lithuania was the first country to declare its independence from the Soviet Union. After a landslide victory in elections to the Supreme Soviet, members of Sąjūdis, an anit-communist party, proclaimed Lithuania's independence on 11 March 1990, becoming the first Soviet republic to do so. The Soviet Union attempted to suppress the secession by imposing an economic blockade. Soviet troops attacked the Vilnius TV Tower, killing 14 Lithuanian civilians and wounding 600 others on the night of 13 January 1991 (January Events).
3. The country is home to one of the largest moving sand dunes in Europe. Hollydays in Lithuania must include this spot! The Curonian Spit is a unique and vulnerable, sandy and wooded cultural landscape on a coastal spit which features small Curonian lagoon settlements. The Spit was formed by the sea, wind and human activity and continues to be shaped by them.
4. The capitalof Lithuania, Vilnius, is home to a break-away hipster republic. In 1995, a group of Lithuanian artists and intellectuals erected a statue of Frank Zappa in the nation’s capital Vilnius. Two years later, on April Fool’s Day 1997, the city’s bohemian quarter declared itself the independent Republic of Uzupio.
5. Lithuania has the fourth best basketball team in the world. Basketball is insanely popular here and the country has adequate representation in the NBA. The country's men's team ranking fourth in the world and having won three bronze medals at the Olympics. The team goes by the nickname "The Second Religion".
6. In the early 13th century, the map of Lithuania was much larger. The tribes in the area formed the Kingdom of Lithuania, quickly expanding outwards into Mongol-controlled Russia, as well as segments of Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus. By the late 14th century this Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the largest kingdom in Europe. At the end of the 18th century the Commonwealth was dissolved, and Lithuania was effectively split between Russia and Prussia.
7. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is known for its Old Town of beautiful architecture. Its Jewish influence until the 20th century has led to it being described as the "Jerusalem of Lithuania" and Napoleon named it "the Jerusalem of the North" as he was passing through in 1812.

Several Soviet OMON assaults on Lithuanian border posts occurred in 1991, after Lithuania declared its independence from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990. As a Soviet republic, the Lithuanian SSR did not have a state border with customs or checkpoints. The newly declared Republic of Lithuania began establishing the State Border Guard Service, which also became a symbol of its strive for independence. The Soviet government viewed the customs posts as illegal and sent the OMON (Special Purpose Police Unit) troops against the posts, especially those along the eastern border with Belarus. The unarmed, custom officers and policemen were harassed, beaten or killed, their cars were stolen or bombed, the posts were burned down or wrecked, and work of the checkpoints was otherwise disrupted. Two of the incidents resulted in the deaths of eight Lithuanian citizens. In total, about 60 officers were attacked and injured, and 23 border posts were burned or destroyed.
The first incident occurred on December 17, 1990 in Eišiškės. Shift leader Petras Pumputis was beaten, lost consciousness, and was taken to a hospital with cerebral hemorrhage. The first organized attacks were organized following the events of January 11–13, 1991 in Vilnius when 14 civilians were killed near the Vilnius TV Tower. Soviet troops attacked and burned border posts in Medininkai and Lavoriškės on January 27. On March 21, OMON troops fired at a border guard bus returning from Vilnius. Three Lithuanian guards were injured.

Medininkai is a village in Lithuania, located 26 km (16 mi) from Vilnius and 2 km (1.2 mi) from the Lithuanian–Belarusian border. According to the 2001 census, the village had 508 residents. Medininkai is the administrative center of an eldership. According to a 2010 eldership report, it had 1374 residents, of whom 92,3% were Polish, 3.2% Lithuanian, and 2.9% Russian.
The village is situated on the Medininkai Highland, near the highest points of Lithuania – the Juozapinė Hill and Aukštojas Hill. The village is famous for the ruins of the Medininkai Castle. On July 31, 1991, Medininkai border post was attacked by the Soviet OMON forces. Seven Lithuanian customs officers were shot, while Tomas Šernas barely survived.
