How to Construct The Square Style Geometric Greek Link Necklace

In this video, "How to Construct The Square Style Geometric Greek Link Necklace," I demonstrate how to make this beautiful necklace in easy to follow, step by step instructions. The link that makes up this necklace was inspired by the abstract, linear designs that I have seen painted as decoration on Greek vases from the Geometric Period of Greek Art. I titled the link "The Square Style Geometric Greek Link" in tribute to this style, and the name refers to the Geometric period in Greek Art which dates from 900BCE to 700BCE. The necklace that you will see me construct in this video consists of concentric square shapes that are tightly wrapped and expand outward to form a distinctively elegant wire link necklace. In a related video, I work with a similar concept of expanding rectangles, also inspired by the Geometric Style of Greek art. In that video, I demonstrate "How to Construct Rectangular Earrings with Rice Paper Beads." These earrings make a wonderful compliment to "The Square Style Geometric Greek Link Necklace." To construct the necklace, each link is made from one continuous, nine inch length of 18 gauge wire. The forming technique used to create the concentric squares relies on exact measurements and very careful attention to detail. I provide tips in the video that assure the consistent accuracy of all measurements. The construction of this necklace requires the use of a variety of jewelry pliers. They include round nose pliers, bent nose pliers, chain nose pliers, and side cutters. I also use a chasing hammer to work harden the wire by carefully hammering the earrings on a steel block. The forging process is an important step in achieving sharp, 90 degree angles at each bend of the concentric square shapes, and also contributes to the look and strength of each individual link.
