Unst is one of the North Isles of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. It is the northernmost of the inhabited British Isles and is the third largest island in Shetland after the Mainland and Yell. It has an area of 46 square miles (120 km2).
Unst is largely grassland, with coastal cliffs. Its main village is Baltasound, formerly the second largest herring fishing port after Lerwick and now the location of a leisure centre and the island's airport. Other settlements include Uyeasound, home to Greenwell's Booth (a Hanseatic warehouse) and Muness Castle (built in 1598 and sacked by pirates in 1627); and Haroldswick, location of a boat museum and a heritage centre.
There are three island names in Shetland of unknown and possibly pre-Celtic origin: Unst, Fetlar and Yell. The earliest recorded forms of these three names do carry Norse meanings: Fetlar is the plural of fetill and means "shoulder-straps", Ǫmstr is "corn-stack" and í Ála is from ál meaning "deep furrow". However, these descriptions are hardly obvious ones as island names and are probably adaptations of a pre-Norse language. This may have been Pictish but there is no clear evidence for this. Taylor (1898) has suggested a derivation from the Old Norse "Ornyst" meaning "eagle's nest".

A short tour of Unst in the Shetland islands, includes Muness castle, hermaness Nature Reserve, Muckle Flugga and Skaw Beach
A lovely ferry trip across the water from Yell to Unst. A nice drive up the East side of the island up to Britains most Northerly point ending at Skaw. Skaw is three buildings/farms with a couple of sheds which are upside down boats. The road ends there! The little cove next to Skaw was beautiful as was the walk around the headland. I was totally surprised to get a FULL signal on my cellphone!
This animation is about the adventures we had while on holiday in Unst, the most northerly inhabited island in the UK. Behind the scenes: http://www.elizabethskitchendiary.co.uk/2013/08/unst-adventure-hue-animation-studio.html
School run, about 4 miles. Please excuse the mistake over Bobby's bus shelter, it was very early ! To see more about life on Unst visit www.alongthebeachroad.blogspot.com - it seems to need to be accessed through Google.
Unst (disused) airfield is on the very northern tip of the Shteland Islands and was the target of our 5-day adventure in G-BMIW a group-owned PA28 Archer based at Shoreham. The full story will appear in UK's Pilot Magazine (April 2010 edition - in the shops from mid March). In this short video Andy is at the controls, filmed by Paul who has already done his landing, after flying from Sumburgh, at this very isolated corner of the UK. Many thanks to the Shetland Islands Council who let us visit - we were the first plane to land there for five months. The three pilots were Andy, John and Paul.
Descríbeme, dime que piensas
Respira bien, hoy sigo aquí
Estoy perdido no puedo ver
Manejo solo y pienso en volver
Que esperas acércate
No haré nada
No me voy a defender
Yo pienso que hoy
Hoy no es tan tarde para salvarnos juntos
Ve y vístete amor
Te veo en la tarde para salir corriendo
Hacia un lugar mejor
Quédate, me siento solo
Conquista el mundo, conquístame
Por fin te veo, creo que estoy bien
No tengo heridas
sobre la piel
Y tengo tan fracturada el alma
no me voy a defender
