Grand Fleet

The Grand Fleet was the main fleet of the British Royal Navy during the First World War.

History

It was formed in August 1914 from the First Fleet and elements of the Second Fleet of the Home Fleets and it included 35–40 state-of-the-art capital ships. It was initially commanded by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe. He was succeeded by Admiral Sir David Beatty in 1916.

The Grand Fleet was based first on Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and later at Rosyth on the Firth of Forth and took part in the biggest fleet action during the war – the Battle of Jutland.

In April 1919 the Grand Fleet was disbanded, with much of its strength forming a new Atlantic Fleet.

Order of battle

Not all the Grand Fleet was available to put to sea at any one time, because ships required maintenance and repairs. One Piece

One Piece (Japanese: ワンピース, Hepburn: Wan Pīsu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 19, 1997, with the chapters collected into eighty tankōbon volumes to date. One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a funny young man whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. With his diverse crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the grand line in search of the world's ultimate treasure known as "One Piece" in order to become the next Pirate King.

The manga has been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) produced by Production I.G in 1998, and an anime series produced by Toei Animation, which began broadcasting in Japan in 1999 and has aired 728 episodes to date. Additionally, Toei has developed thirteen animated feature films, two OVAs, and five television specials. Several companies have developed various types of merchandising such as a trading card game, and a large number of video games. The manga series was licensed for an English language release in North America & the United Kingdom by Viz Media and in Australia by Madman Entertainment. The anime series was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment for an English-language release in North America, before the license was dropped and subsequently acquired by Funimation in 2007.

Straw hat

A straw hat is a brimmed hat that is woven out of straw or reeds. The hat is designed to protect the head from the sun and against heatstroke, but straw hats are also used in fashion as a decorative element or a uniform.

Manufacture

There are several styles of straw hats, but all of them are woven using some form of plant fibre. Many of these hats are formed in a similar way to felt hats; they are softened by steam or by submersion in hot water, and then formed by hand or over a hat block. Finer and more expensive straw hats have a tighter and more consistent weave. Since it takes much more time to weave a larger hat than a smaller one, larger hats are more expensive.

In 1914, Baltimore, Maryland was the leading manufacturer of straw hats in the US, "in both the quality and factory value."

History

Straw hats have been worn in Europe and Asia since after the Middle Ages during the summer months, and have changed little between the medieval times and today. Many are to be seen in the famous calendar miniatures of the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, worn by all classes,but mostly by men.

The Sound Lounge

The Sound Lounge was a Canadian radio show, which aired from 2007 to 2008 on CTVglobemedia's hot adult contemporary-formatted radio stations in Halifax, Toronto, Brockville, Peterborough, Kingston, Winnipeg, Calgary and Victoria.

The show handed over control of the content to the user's hands by an all listener chosen playlist, listener generated remixes and mash ups, and the opportunity to interact with listeners coast to coast via e-mail, text messaging and voice. It aired weekday evenings from the studios of CHUM-FM in Toronto.

Originally hosted by Cory Kimm, the show debuted on February 5, 2007. Chris Biggs became the program's new host on September 11, 2007, after Kimm moved to CHIQ in Winnipeg as the station's morning host, and Richie Favalaro became the host in early 2008 after Biggs left CHUM to join a competing Toronto radio station, CKFM. The show was cancelled on June 16, 2008.
