The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan is the biography book of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan written in 1991 by Robert Kanigel and published by Washington Square Press. The book gives a detailed account of his upbringing in India, his mathematical achievements and his mathematical collaboration with English mathematician G. H. Hardy. The book also reviews the life of Hardy and the academic culture of Cambridge University during early twentieth century.
A feature film of the same title and based on the book was directed by Matt Brown using his own written script. Dev Patel plays Srinivasa Ramanujan, Jeremy Irons plays G. H. Hardy and Devika Bhise plays Ramanujan’s wife. Filming began in August 2014 at Trinity College, Cambridge.
"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either passively, openly or via sabotage.
As a phrase meaning "the boss" it dates from at least 1918.
In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.
The use of this term was expanded to counterculture groups and their battles against authority, such as the Yippies, which, according to a May 19, 1969 article in U.S. News and World Report, had the "avowed aim ... to destroy 'The Man', their term for the present system of government". The term eventually found its way into humorous usage, such as in a December 1979 motorcycle ad from the magazine Easyriders which featured the tagline, "California residents: Add 6% sales tax for The Man."
Jeremy John Irons (born September 19, 1948) is an English actor. After receiving classical training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Irons began his acting career on stage in 1969, and has since appeared in many West End theatre productions including The Winter's Tale, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew, Godspell, Richard II and Embers. In 1984, he made his Broadway debut in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing and received a Tony Award for Best Actor.
Irons' first major film role came in the 1981 romantic drama The French Lieutenant's Woman, for which he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor. After starring in such film dramas as Moonlighting (1982), Betrayal (1983) and The Mission (1986), he gained critical acclaim for portraying twin gynaecologists in David Cronenberg's psychological thriller Dead Ringers (1988). In 1990, Irons played accused murderer Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune, and took home multiple awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar FRS (pronunciation: i/sriːnivɑːsə rɑːmɑːnʊdʒən/) (22 December 1887 – 26 April 1920) was an Indian mathematician and autodidact. Though he had almost no formal training in pure mathematics, he made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. Ramanujan initially developed his own mathematical research in isolation; it was quickly recognized by Indian mathematicians. When his skills became apparent to the wider mathematical community, centred in Europe at the time, he began a famous partnership with the English mathematician G. H. Hardy. He rediscovered previously known theorems in addition to producing new theorems.
During his short life, Ramanujan independently compiled nearly 3,900 results (mostly identities and equations). Nearly all his claims have now been proven correct, although some were already known. He stated results that were both original and highly unconventional, such as the Ramanujan prime and the Ramanujan theta function, and these have inspired a vast amount of further research. The Ramanujan Journal, an international publication, was launched to publish work in all areas of mathematics influenced by his work.
It's just one storm after another
I'm being blown in the wrong direction
Making my live like all the rest
Another face like just the rest
So one by one we all follow
One by one we all walk the same line
Were in time we forget what it's like to feel alive
Falling asleep. getting older, waking up
A little bit closer
To a line where we forget.
Where we all forget
Who knew my life would be
Would be just like this
I'm growing older and just starting
Starting to forget
These days just fly right by
With me spending all my time
With my head in my hands
Knowing soon I'll step
Into line there's no looking back
All these moments turn to memories
That will slowly fade and die
Fade and die just like life
Falling asleep, getting older, waking up
A little bit closer
To a line where we forget
Where we all forget
Who knew my life would be
Would be like this
I'm growing older and just starting
Starting to forget
I'm starting to forget
If I only knew then
What I know now
If I only could have stayed there somehow
If i only knew then
What I know now
If only I could have stayed young somehow
As much as I wanted to stay young
I know this life has to move on
Move on
Who knew this life would be
Would be this hard
I'm growing up but I'll always be
Who knew this life would be
Would be so hard
I'm growing up but I'll always be
