Get ready for Maximum Rocknroll #398, the July 2016 issue and the second edition of our Ex-Yugo retrospective special! This one features Croatian bands including the wild synth-punk of KAOS, Rijeka’s PARAF as well as KUD IDIJOTI and BESPOSLIČARI from the small yet bustling scene of Pula, plus some classic Slovenian groups such as BULDOŽER, LUBLANSKI PSI, and Ljubljana’s NIET. We also got a chance to get in some of the latest and greatest in North American hardcore, interviewing the globetrotting Bay Area straightedge outfit TØRSÖ and Toronto teenage maniacs MOLLOT. The UK’s DOMESTICS talk about their unrelenting dedication to punk in East Anglia, and RED RED KROVVY also sit down for their first MRR interview ten years after their formation as a high school punk band on Australia’s isolated north coast. Also featured: an article on Mabel Valdiviezo, whose upcoming documentary Prodigal Daughter tells her story as a punk woman in the DIY subterráneo scene in Lima in the ‘80s, coming to the US as an undocumented immigrant in the ‘90s, and her subsequent return home. This issue also includes an Iowa City scene report, a photo spread from Nothing Nice To Say fest, hundreds of reviews (records, demos, books, films; you name it), another fix of your favorite columnists; in short, another high stakes, buy-or-die edition of MRR.

A selection of rare records from our collection!

As MRR enters its 40th year, we are undertaking our most ambitious project ever: creating a comprehensive online database of our record collection and music reviews. The project will also see out-of-print issues of the magazine fully digitized. You’ll be able to access it all online for free. We’re in the home stretch of a fundraising campaign, and we just passed our reach goal of $25,000. The money will ensure that we can do this project quickly, accurately, and efficiently. Consider donating if you have the means, and spread the word! More information is available here.

in flux band logo

Band name:
IN FLUX

Date & location formed:
Winter 2015/2016 in Portland, OR.

Reason for forming:
We wanted to form a band like this for cathartic reasons but also for empowering ones. Some of us are introverted, AFAB, queer, and/or femme, and it feels good to be in a heavy, fast band because people wouldn’t necessarily expect that from us. its fun to fuck with peoples perceptions on what art you should make based on your appearance or your personality. fuck that shit.

In Flux (photo by BRYAN)

In Flux (photo by BRYAN)

What are your lyrics about?
Depression, death, fucked up family dynamics, strength through solidarity and friendship, being genderqueer, patriarchal bullshit.

How would you describe your sound?
Sprinkled ignorance admist the d-beat.

What’s in the future for this band?
Demo tape out on GET BETTER records soon!

West Coast Tour in August:
8/10–Portland, OR
8/12–Seattle, WA
8/13–Boise, ID

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
THE C.H.U.D’S

Date & location formed:
late 2015 (played our first show in February 2016) Ottawa Ontario, Canada.

Reason for forming:
Our singer and first bassist drunkenly talking about forming a band.

The CHUDS (photo by Fig Reilly)

The CHUDS (photo by Fig Reilly)

What are your lyrics about?
Our Lyrics are about the pain/struggle/frustrations of being a poor, non passing trans woman and the dehumanizing effects of how society treats you when you don’t fit. We sing about trans phobia in punk and the silence of so-called allies. We sing about the constant struggle to survive and the drugs we do to cope. Mostly it’s just the pissed of screaming of a woman trying to survive by any means necessary.

How would you describe your sound?
Our influences are grunge, noise rock and hardcore.

What’s in the future for this band?
Writing new songs, playing as many shows as we can, touring and just trying to live through the next day.

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
VANILLA POPPERS

Date & location formed:
Cleveland OH, about a year ago.

Reason for forming:
Because what else are you going to do in Cleveland?

Vanilla Poppers photo by Kat Cade)

Vanilla Poppers photo by Kat Cade)

What are your lyrics about?
Being a creep. Turning to the bottle. SNIFFING POPPERS. Having your rags, living in the 21st century, boys, the usual bullshit.

How would you describe your sound?
I dunno, punk? It’s fast, it has a lot of hardcore tendencies but the high pitched vocals (the singer is a guy punching himself in the nuts over the duration of the whole set) make it all yappy. We did a COMES cover but then we also wanted to cover ZOLAR X and then CRISIS so it’s kinda across the board. RAMONES FOREVER.

What’s in the future for this band?
A 3 week US tour in August.
A 7″ off Negative Jazz and a 7″ off Lumpy sometime after that.
A 12″ if we don’t kill each other with love first

arrotzak band logo

Band name:
ARROTZAK

Date & location formed:
San Sebastian, Basque Country, 2015.

Reason for forming:
We were in other kind of bands and we wanted to do some dark and direct punk.

What are your lyrics about?
Daily internal wars, fears, death, angst, alcoholism and small lights of hope.

How would you describe your sound?
Some kind of straigh up melodic punk with dark desperate aftertaste.
