An unspeakable incident—50 people dead and over 50 wounded at Pulse, a gay dance club in Orlando. Given that the shooter (or terrorist, because that’s what he was) is of Afghan descent and called 911 before carrying out this act to claim his support of ISIS, we’ll no doubt see an increase, once again, in anti-Muslim sentiment and that plays right into the hands of the Vulgar Talking Yam (credit: Charlie Pierce) running as the Republican presidential candidate. To say nothing of other fear-mongering, bigoted politicians. And they still won’t give one inch on any sort of rational gun control. Also, when these right-wing politicians bleat about keeping the victims, their families and the city of Orlando in their “thoughts and prayers,” realize that these are the same politicians who hate gay people, who want to deny them even the most basic civil liberties.

I can’t add much more than that. I don’t think I want to. R.I.P. to all the victims and condolences to their loved ones.

Sonic Overload 6/6/16

32 years old is too young for anyone to die and that’s how old my friend Brandon Farrell was last week when he passed away. I’d imagine any regular listener of Sonic Overload has a pretty good idea who he was because all of his bands have been in regular rotation (DJ talk!) for over ten years and I always gave the releases on his No Way label plenty of airtime as well. That’s the case this week—the first set features some of his bands and the last has an array of No Way discs (all on vinyl—no CDs). I did a more comprehensive tribute on last week’s Old FX Punk Radio show and that will be available for download this week on the Sonic Overload archive page.

This show is also dedicated to The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, who passed away over the weekend at 74, after 30+ years of suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. I don’t usually go for hero worship but Ali was one of mine. A great champion outside the ring as well as inside. He was more than just a boxer. If you’re young and never got the chance to see Ali during his prime, there’s no shortage of material on YouTube and you should also watch “When We Were Kings,” a documentary about Ali’s fight with George Foreman in Zaire in 1974.
