A law degree is an academic degree conferred for studies in law. Such degrees are generally preparation for legal careers; but while their curricula may be reviewed by legal authority, they do not themselves confer a license. A legal license is granted (typically by examination) and exercised locally; while the law degree can have local, international, and world-wide aspects- e.g., in Britain the Legal Practice Course is required to become a British solicitor or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) to become a barrister.
The first academic degrees were all law degrees- and the first law degrees were doctorates. The foundations of the first universities in Europe were the glossators of the 11th century, which were schools of law. The first European university, that of Bologna, was founded as a school of law by four famous legal scholars in the 12th century who were students of the glossator school in that city. It is from this history that it is said that the first academic title of doctor applied to scholars of law. The degree and title were not applied to scholars of other disciplines until the 13th century. And at the University of Bologna from its founding in the 12th century until the end of the 20th century the only degree conferred was the doctorate, usually earned after five years of intensive study after secondary school. The rising of the doctor of philosophy to its present level is a modern novelty. At its origins, a doctorate was simply a qualification for a guild—that of teaching law.
A lot of people who study Law at University do so because they want to become practising lawyers, whether as barristers or solicitors, but it is not necessary to read Law at University to become a practising lawyer. Equally, studying Law at University is a legitimate subject for academic study even if you definitely do not want to become a lawyer or think that you may not become a practising lawyer. That is because the study of Law at University is not a vocational subject; it is an academic subject and an intellectual discipline. Graham Virgo, Professor of English Private Law and Deputy Chair of the Law Faculty Board at the University of Cambridge, discusses the benefits of studying a law degree even if you do not wish to progress into the legal professions. Considerations include traini...

Milbank Tweed Forum: Leveraging Your Law Degree into a Lifetime of Leadership When Stephen Ross LLM '66 was an NYU Law student, he may not have imagined becoming founder of a global real estate development company, much the less the owner of the Miami Dolphins. But thanks in no small part to his NYU Law LLM, that's where life has taken him. Dean Trevor Morrison leads Ross and his longtime friend and legal advisor Martin Edelman in a discussion of how a junior attorney in a Detroit accounting office parlayed his knowledge of federal tax law into a hugely successful tax practice, and then turned his sights on the worlds of real estate and sports. This event took place on October 29, 2014.

Just because you chose the uncommon practice of law doesn’t mean you have to starve (well, initially you have to starve). Say ’no’ to the man, sleep better at night and be yourself. A suggested journey through the practice of law as you step to the cliff’s edge of your new profession and wonder “will I fall or will I dive?”.
I got your name and number
You seem kinda surprised
Maybe it's 'cause I can be
You know like cold as ice
In crowded situations
I always want to go
And if I see you leaving
I'll beat you to the door
I'm gonna tell you something
You're better than fake-wild
I see the future in it
They try and kill your style
Your manners and your motives
I've seen the way it goes
So memorize my number
That's why I got a phone
Call me after dark
Call me
Call me after dark
I can make the sun rise daily
Right up from your landscape painting
I will be in the front row later
When your brush becomes a mic
Maybe we could change this game forever
Shapes our breath make in cold weather
They might say we're both crazy
I'm just glad I found you, baby
Call me after dark
Call me
Call me after dark
I don't want someone telling me
No-oh-oh, you're out of time
I don't mind being debated
As long as you're with me tonight
I'm not gonna give up easy
We were made to cross the line
I don't want the things that we do
I don't want to let them die
Call me after dark
Call me
Call me after dark
I'm not gonna give up easy
We were made to cross the line
I don't want the things that we do
I don't want to let them die
Call me after dark
Call me
Call me after dark
Call me after dark
Call me
Call me after dark
Call me after dark
Call me
Call me after dark
