Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a joint press conference with his
German counterpart
Frank-Walter Steinmeier following their meeting in
Moscow, Wednesday.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (
Russian): "Regarding Russian troops [in eastern
Ukraine], I understand and we see it very well that the
Ukrainian side wants to justify its inability to fulfill what it has signed for, with references to complicated security situation, to the mythic presence of Russian troops, up to 40,
000 soldiers. It has never been approved by anyone but this disinformation is circulating in the mass media as we can see it today. There is not a word in the
Minsk Agreements that Russian troops are in Ukraine and should be withdrawn from there. In accordance with the agreements, any foreign military force is not allowed in the territory of Ukraine. I want to stress once again that there is not a single fact which proves that we have seen Russian troops. But nobody is hiding the presence of military personnel of
NATO member states. Several hundreds of foreign trainers from US,
Canada and other countries are assisting the
Ukrainian army in the training process."
SOT, Frank-Walter Steinmeier,
German Foreign Minister (German): "What we have discussed today is that in terms of security, both of us are not satisfied with the situation in Ukraine.
Despite all efforts, there are violations of the ceasefire and the security situation in eastern Ukraine is still not stable. While it is not stable, we are afraid that it can escalate again at any time. That is why in the current situation we have to take care of the security issues and we need quick and concrete steps towards in the security area while paying attention to a better ceasefire."
SOT, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Foreign Minister (German): "Of course, we have also discussed the situation in
Syria. We don't want to overestimate the situation but I want to say that we have not advanced that issue yet during the last five years of the civil war as we have managed to do now. Five years of the civil war,
250,000 people killed, twelve million
Syrian people who have lost their homeland. At the current moment, after two meetings in
Vienna as well as agreements that we have reached in
Munich in February, for the fist time we are able to provide hundreds of thousands of people, who were cut off from any supplies in Syria, with food and water. Also for the first time we believe in the political process."
