With the help of Brent Emerson and local (and so so knowledgable) expert Toni we explored the invertebrates of the laurel forests. We sampled using sweep nets, umbrellas and sticks and pitfall traps. Highlights include the endemic semi-slug (a snail halfway to evolving into a slug again) and the 190mm long Stigmatogaster subterranea!

Walking in the laurel forest, Tenerife.
Some areas of the Canary Islands are still home to a prehistoric natural treasure: laurel forests that have survived here since the Tertiary Period. In Tenerife, most of these expanses can be found in the mountain ranges of Anaga, Teno, Aguagarcía and Tigaiga.
We will walk through the laurel forest, located on the territory of the Anaga National Park.

Because not only the waterfall itself is impressive here. The way there and the extraordinary nature also cast a spell over us. Fanal is located between Paul da Serra plateau and Ribeira da Janela, it is one of the most emblematic places on the Madeira Island for the enjoyment of the most varied recreational and leisure activities and contact with nature.
The magnificent area of Fanal is part of a forest-covered area originating in Madeira -Laurissilva Forest, classified as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO, since December 1999, and member of the European Network of Sites of Community Importance.
Also in this place, it is possible to find the remains of a small volcanic crater which, in winter, is partially covered with water and becomes an impressive lagoon - Lagoa do Fanal.
The island of Madeira is known for its dramatic landscape, which includes rugged mountains, volcanoes, and rocky beaches. But one of Madeira's most unique treasures is an ancient forest where every step takes you inside a scene ripped from a fairy tale. Known for its enchanting morning fog, the Fanal forest is part of an ancient laurel forest.
Fanal is part of the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its beauty and ecological importance. Incredibly, 15 to 40 million years ago, much of Southern Europe was covered in this type of laurel forest. Now, it can only be found in Madeira, the Azores, and the Canary Islands. Fanal is particularly noteworthy for its hiking trails, which allow visitors to take in the different specimens of trees—some of which are 500 years old.
Luckily, thanks to its UNESCO status, the Fanal forest will remain in pristine condition for years to come. Located within the Madeira Natural Park, it enjoys special protective measure to ensure that these ancient trees continue to flourish.

The Los Tilos waterfall (in Spanish “Cascada De Los Tilos”) is one of the sights on La Palma.
Because not only the waterfall itself is impressive here. The way there and the extraordinary nature also cast a spell over us. And the best thing about it: You don't have to walk uphill and downhill for two hours until you reach Los Tilos. After about 10 to 15 minutes you are standing in front of the ca. 22 meter high waterfall.
From our point of view, this path alone is impressive. Far away from cities and street noise, you can immerse yourself in nature that will quickly clear your mind. The waterfall itself is probably particularly impressive in winter and spring. Because the more it rained beforehand, the more impressive the falling water jet is of course.
While laurel forests were still quite widespread in Europe a few million years ago, they are now only found on a few Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores. At Los Tilos you can explore an area of laurel forest. Colloquially, many visitors also refer to the region as a jungle or primeval forest, since the abundance of green, the mosses and ferns create this character.
