What are mosses? Explained for kids and making of a beautiful moss garden..
Mosses are tiny plants which belongs to a group called Bryophyte. They grow in a moist and shady places, they vary in their size, shape and colors..size varies between smallest being few millimeters in size to largest being around 60cm in size. Most of them are green in color but there are also red, orange, brown and black colored mosses. They are found growing like a soft cushiony mat like structures, spreading over the rocks, walls, tree barks especially near the water sources like ponds and wells. They are rootless plants and also lack vascular system. Though they have a structure called rhizoid which helps in anchoring, it will not assist in absorption of water. Instead water is absorbed by the cells of the mosses all over its surface. They do not even produce any flower, fruits or see...

Instead water is absorbed by the cells of the mosses all over its surface. They do not even produce any flower, fruits or seeds. Instead they reproduce by producing spores. You can find them commonly around your house during rainy season.
Fun facts:
1. Mosses were the first plant on the earth which was evolved from algae
2. Most of the animals do not eat these plants as it is hard to digest. The only animal that eat moss is a Raindeer.
3. In olden days the dried mosses were used for pillow stuffing, wound dressing and even as diapers
4. The largest moss which is of 60cm in length is found in New Zealand and it is known as Dawsonia superba. The smallest one is of the size a pencil dot and it is known as Cape pygmy.
Mosses are the real treat to your eyes..have a closer look at them and you will be amazed by their natural beauty. Sudi and nidhi like collecting different kinds of mosses and making their own tiny moss garden which looks very beautiful.. Hope you also try this at you home and share your experience..

Although some species have conducting tissues, these are generally poorly developed and structurally different from similar tissue found in vascular plants.[6] Mosses do not have seeds and after fertilisation develop sporophytes with unbranched stalks topped with single capsules containing spores. They are typically 0.2–10 cm (0.1–3.9 in) tall, though some species are much larger. Dawsonia, the tallest moss in the world, can grow to 50 cm (20 in) in height. There are approximately 12,000 species.[2]
