A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

Recorded January 19, 2004 Stretching across Maui's southern and eastern coastline, Haleakala National Park is home to Maui's highest peak. Rising 10,023 feet above sea level, Haleakala's graceful slopes can be seen from just about any point on the island. Haleakala means "house of the sun" in Hawaiian, and legend has it that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as he stood on the volcano's summit, slowing its descent to make the day last even longer. http://www.OceanAdventureVideo.com Hiking Into the Crater Haleakala National Park. Nick and I drove up Haleakala and parked at the Halemauu trailhead. From here we hitch hiked to the summit and started our journey down Sliding Sands Trail. Starting at 10,023 feet we made our way to 6,000 feet at the base of the crater. Here we found a huge lava tube and with only an iphone for light, navigated through and out. Past Holua Cabin, our climb out began, and 1,500 feet later we were back at the car. 8 hour hike. Filmed with a GoPro Hero3 and Hero2. Bring LOTS of water and food! Rain jacket also! Be prepared for cold, wind and rain... today we lucked out and it was gorgeous all day! SUBSCRIBE for More!
After being in Hawaii cheering on my sister in the World Championship Ironman event, we flew to Maui for a few hours to visit Haleakalā National Park! We drove up to the 10,000ft summit and over looked the massive crater and beautiful clouds and landscape. This park is massive! We only had time to view the summit but next time i am sure going to visit the other side of the park in Hana, Maui where there are lush rainforests and waterfalls! Until next time! Mahalo Maui!
Haleakalā ("house of the sun") is the name of a peak on the southwestern edge of Kaupō Gap on the island of Maui, Hawaii. A massive shield volcano, Haleakalā reaches an elevation of 10,023 ft, and forms more than 75% of the island. In Hawaiian folklore, the depression (crater) at the summit of Haleakalā was home to the grandmother of the demigod Māui. According to the legend, Māui's grandmother helped him capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky in order to lengthen the day.
Great trip to the summit of Haleakala on Maui. 85F at the beach, 48F at the summit. Above the clouds with views to the big island to the south. Observatory in the background.

A full day out hiking in Halaeakala National Park on the island of Maui in Hawaii. I hike the Sliding Sands Trail, which takes me down into the dormant volcanic crater and past the large cinder cones. I then hike near the Ko'olau Gap and make the ascent on the Halemau'u Trail before catching a ride back to the summit to watch the sunset on Haleakala.
This video was taken in Maui, Hawaii on Friday, October 19, 2012. It was my 82nd birthday. The camera used is a GoPro Hero and was mounted on the inside windshield of a rental car.The descent from the crater in Haleakala National Park started at 10,000 feet and ended at approximately 3,000 feet. The blacktop roads in the park were the best I encountered on the island of Maui. Most blacktop roads on Maui are narrow but relatively smooth. Distances to any points of interest are short. For example, 70 miles from Wailea to Hana; 50 miles from Wilea to the crater, etc. It is a great place to visit.
Another video from the back log, this was the drive in Hawaii back from Haleakala National Park, where we went to go see the sunrise at the summit at about 6:30am local time. As it was 10,000ft up with non-stop heavy wind, it was absolutely freezing, as in heavy coat, heavy shirt, and heavy pants freezing. Oh, and a blanket too. As a result, I only was able to get some of the sunrise before my fingers went completely num... So instead, enjoy the scenery from the drive down ;) You can see a few photos from the sunrise here: https://plus.google.com/photos/105735174348402614436/albums/5686525219324076865/5686540895769026482
