On August 28, 2015 a small team of Nike athletes went overseas to Chamonix, France to compete in some of the biggest ultra endurance events in the world.
The UTMB® (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) is a 170 km/105 mile race circumventing the Alps, crossing into 3 countries with over 33,000 ft of elevation gain.
The CCC® (Chamonix-Courmayeur-Champex) is a 101 km race starting in Courmayeur, Italy and also finishing in Chamonix, France. This race has over 20,000 ft of positive elevation change.
Both events are considering one of the toughest at its respective distances. American men have not typically fared well there. As such, Nike athletes David Laney (UTMB), Tim Tollefson (CCC) and Zach Miller (CCC) set out to prove that American men can compete and compete well in the imposing European mountains.

Mont Blanc
Mont Blanc (French pronunciation: [mɔ̃ blɑ̃]) or Monte Bianco (Italian pronunciation: [ˈmonte ˈbjaŋko]), both meaning "White Mountain", is the highest mountain in the Alps and the highest peak in Europe outside of the Caucasus range. It rises 4,808.73 m (15,777 ft) above sea level and is ranked 11th in the world in topographic prominence.
The mountain lies in a range called the Graian Alps, between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Haute-Savoie, France. The location of the summit is on the watershed line between the valleys of Ferret and Veny in Italy and the valleys of Montjoie and Arve in France. The Mont Blanc massif is popular for mountaineering, hiking, skiing, and snowboarding.
The three towns and their communes which surround Mont Blanc are Courmayeur in Aosta Valley, Italy, and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Chamonix in Haute-Savoie, France. The latter town was the site of the first Winter Olympics. A cable car ascends and crosses the mountain range from Courmayeur to Chamonix, through the Col du Géant. Constructed beginning in 1957 and completed in 1965, the 11.6 km (7¼ mi) Mont Blanc Tunnel runs beneath the mountain between these two countries and is one of the major trans-Alpine transport routes.

Let's take a trip to the wonderful ski town of Chamonix, France in this episode of Aboard the Guiding Light. This town is at the base of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Afterwards we are going to take one of the longest and highest cable cars (gondola) up Mont Blanc to Aiguille du Midi. From here we will see the building, Step Into The Void, mountaineering trails, a museum, and the Matterhorn off in the distance. We could get down by paragliding, skiing, parachute skiing, or base jumping, but I chose to take the cable car down halfway and hike the rest of the way while stopping at a little Swiss cottage for hot coco and soup. Let's take a trip to the wonderful ski town of Chamonix, France in this episode of Aboard the Guiding Light. This town is at the base of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Afterwards we are going to take one of the longest and highest cable cars (gondola) up Mont Blanc to Aiguille du Midi. From here we will see the building, Step Into The Void, mountaineering trails, a museum, and the Matterhorn off in the distance. We could get down by paragliding, skiing, parachute skiing, or base jumping, but I chose to take the cable car down halfway and hike the rest of the way while stopping at a little Swiss cottage for hot coco and soup.
