Get down is a stance, posture or movement in many traditional African cultures and throughout the African diaspora. It involves bending at the waist and knees, bringing the body low to the ground in moments of ecstasy or intensity. Bending at the knees and waist is an expression of profound spirituality and connectedness to the earth. It also indicates suppleness and conveys qualities and values of vitality, youthfulness and energy.

In Gahu choreography, often dancers move counterclockwise in a circle of alternating men and women; their performance includes "long passages of a lightly bouncy basic 'step' leavened with brief 'get down' sections in which the dancers lower their center of weight and move with intensified strength and quickness."

The term "get down" in popular music and slang is directly related to this particular element of the African aesthetic, filtered through the African-American experience. Use of the term by white Americans since the middle-20th century, though, is credited to the influence of a white disc jockey, Bill "Hoss" Allen, who used it on his nightly soul music shows on Nashville, Tennessee station WLAC.

I got a Twitter account in October 2009 when I had just started Grade 8. I distinctly remember being at a school-wide movie night, wearing a typical 2009 fake leather jacket and purple tank top and tweeting about how the monsters in the movie Monsters vs. Aliens cornily dance to a Will Smith song. I sent that tweet when I had 0 followers, but there was something about sending out jokes into the timeless internet world that made me want to make people laugh for a living. Nearly 6 years later, here I am. An 18 year old person who did her first stand up set at 17, has written and directed countless sketch comedy shows and is currently making movies in one of the top film programs in Canada. It sounds silly, but I owe a lot of it to the internet. From watching comedians and internet personalities on YouTube, share their lives and brighten their viewers' days; from tweeting random girls about our mutual love of the Shaytards and eventually meeting them in person and forming a best-internet-friend bond; to somehow getting a professional career on it's way. The internet made me who I am today and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Also, thanks so much for watching this video! In July 1999, I wrote a "Family Talk" column titled “Shaving Is a Way to Show Love.” The column chronicled my life of shaving my face, from boyhood to manhood. The point of the article was that men should consider shaving on the weekend, even if they don’t have to, as a way of expressing love to their spouse ...
