BMW M3

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3-Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M.

M3 models have been derived from the E30, E36, E46, E90/E92/E93, and F80 3-series, and sold with coupe, saloon and convertible body styles. Upgrades over the "standard" 3-Series automobiles include more powerful and responsive engines, improved handling/suspension/braking systems, aerodynamic body enhancements, lightweight components, and interior/exterior accents with the tri-colour "M" (Motorsport) emblem.

The last M3 coupe was produced in Germany on 5 July 2013, replaced by the F82/F83 M4 Coupe and convertible starting with the 2015 model year, but the M3 name will remain in use for the saloon version.

The BMW M3 remains the only car ever to have earned more titles than the venerable Porsche 911 in Motorsport, and also is the most successful touring, and grand touring car ever to have participated in racing.

E30 M3

Based on the 1986 model year E30 3-Series, the E30 M3 used the BMW S14 engine.

BMW S14

The BMW S14 is a straight-4 DOHC piston engine which was used in the E30 M3. It is based on the M10 block and the M88 head with two cylinders removed. The successor to the S14 is the S50 six-cylinder engine (since it was used in the following M3).

Two separate throttle bodies are used, each incorporating two throttle butterfly plates.

This version was only sold in Portugal and Italy. It has a 1990 cc capacity (achieved by shortening the stroke to 72.6 mm) and produces 141 kW (192 PS) .

The E30 M3 was initially released with the 147 kW S14B23. Versions equipped with a catalytic converter produced 143 kW (194 PS; 192 hp) and 230 Nm.

Applications:

S14B23 EVO2

This update of the S14B23 produced 162 kW (220 PS; 217 hp), or 158 kW (215 PS; 212 hp) if equipped with a catalytic converter. Changes include a revised intake camshaft profile and modified exhaust camshaft timing, increased compression, and a more efficient cylinder head intake port design. Larger diameter exhaust header tubes are used.

BMW

History

BMW was established as a business entity following a restructuring of the Rapp Motorenwerke aircraft manufacturing firm in 1917. After the end of World War I in 1918, BMW was forced to cease aircraft-engine production by the terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty. The company consequently shifted to motorcycle production as the restrictions of the treaty started to be lifted in 1923, followed by automobiles in 1928–29.

BMW 3 Series (E30)

The BMW E30 is a compact executive car which was produced by BMW from 1982 to 1993. The initial models used the 2-door sedan body style, and in following years the 4-door sedan, convertible and estate ("touring") body styles were added.The E36 replaced the E30 in 1990, however the E30 convertible remained in production until 1992 and the E30 touring remained in production until 1993.

The E30 models were powered by a range of 4-cylinder and straight-6 engines.

The BMW M3 was first introduced on the E30 platform. The E30 BMW M3 was fitted with the high-revving BMW S14 4-cylinder petrol engine which produced 175 kW (235 hp) in its final European-only iteration.

Body styles

The E30 3-series was penned by Claus Luthe in 1978, the designer of the NSU Ro 80.

It was produced as four- and two-door saloons, two-door convertible (however the M3 convertible was only offered for the European market), cabriolet by Baur, and a five-door estate (marketed as the "touring").

The BMW M3 utilised a widened and heavily redesigned variation of the two-door body style, therefore the M3 shares few body parts with other E30 models.
