Anna Sergeyevna Kournikova (Russian: А́нна Серге́евна Ку́рникова; IPA: [ˈannə sʲɪrˈɡʲejɪvnə ˈkurnʲɪkəvə]; born 7 June 1981) is a Russian former professional tennis player. Her appearance and celebrity status made her one of the best known tennis stars worldwide. At the peak of her fame, fans looking for images of Kournikova made her name one of the most common search strings on Google Search.

Despite never winning a singles title, she reached No. 8 in the world in 2000. She achieved greater success playing doubles, where she was at times the World No. 1 player. With Martina Hingis as her partner, she won Grand Slam titles in Australia in 1999 and 2002, and the WTA Championships in 1999 and 2000. They referred to themselves as the "Spice Girls of Tennis".

Kournikova's professional tennis career ended prematurely at the age of 21 due to serious back and spinal problems, including a herniated disk. 2002 Wimbledon Championships

The 2002 Wimbledon Championships was a tennis tournament played on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London in England. It was the 116th edition of the Wimbledon Championships and were held from 24 June to 7 July 2002. It was the third Grand Slam tennis event of the year.

Goran Ivanišević did not defend his title this year. Lleyton Hewitt, the World No.1, defeated David Nalbandian in the final in straight sets to win his second Grand Slam title and first Wimbledon title. He became the first Australian since Pat Cash in 1987 to win Wimbledon. Venus Williams was unsuccessful in her title defence, being defeated in the final by her younger sister Serena in the women's final.
