This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In his TEDx talk, Leon Isaacs talks about the importance of remittances in the broader economic and development context. By going through the specifics of why providing access to financial services in countries that are not usually in this position is important, he emphasizes on the social and inclusiveness benefits of remittances.
Leon Isaacs, Chief Executive Officer - Developing Markets Associates Limited (DMA) has over 20 years hands-on experience in the remittance industry and has been involved with two successful start-up money transfer businesses during that time. Before establishing DMA, Leon was part of the senior management team running Coinstar Money Transfer Limited (formerly Travelex Money Transfer Limited). Aside from his functional responsibilities Leon was responsible for the business in UK, Sub-Saharan Africa, Ireland, Belgium and Netherlands. Prior to this, Leon was Commercial & Marketing Director at MoneyGram International and worked for the Thomas Cook Group. He began his career with NatWest Bank. He was a steering group member of the UK Government's Remittances Task Force, form its inception in 2005 until the completion of its work early in 2010. He is an observer to the G20 Consultative Committee of the Private-Public Sector Partnership on Remittances. Leon has spoken at, and chaired, numerous international conferences on remittances including at the World Bank, the United Nations and the G8. Leon was also Managing Director of the International Association of Money Transfer Networks, an international trade association, 2009 and 2013.

bKash, a mobile money service offered by BRAC bank in Bangladesh, is making it easier and cheaper for the urban poor to send money to family in rural areas, where financial access is low and poverty rates are high. Rather than having to physically transport remittances to family members, people can now do it through mobile money transfers. "For many people, the use of bKash is perhaps the first and only option for a formal financial service," says Kamal Quadir, bKash CEO. Shameran Abed, Head of Microfinance at BRAC, notes "It brings a lot more people into the formal financial sector."

A remittance is a transfer of money by a foreign worker to his or her home country.
Money sent home by migrants constitutes the second largest financial inflow to many developing countries, exceeding international aid. Estimates of remittances to developing countries vary from International Fund for Agricultural Development's US$301 billion (including informal flows) to the World Bank's US$250 billion for 2006 (excluding informal flows). Remittances contribute to economic growth and to the livelihoods of people worldwide[citation needed]. Moreover, remittance transfers can also promote access to financial services for the sender and recipient, thereby increasing financial and social inclusion[citation needed]. Remittances also foster, in the receiving countries, a further economic dependence on the global economy instead of building sustainable, local economies.[citation needed]
Remittances are playing an increasingly large role in the economies of many countries, contributing to economic growth and to the livelihoods of less prosperous people (though generally not the poorest of the poor). According to World Bank estimates, remittances totaled US$414 billion in 2009, of which US$316 billion went to developing countries that involved 192 million migrant workers. For some individual recipient countries, remittances can be as high as a third of their GDP. As remittance receivers often have a higher propensity to own a bank account, remittances promote access to financial services for the sender and recipient, an essential aspect of leveraging remittances to promote economic development. The top recipients in terms of the share of remittances in GDP included many smaller economies such as Tajikistan (45%), Moldova (38%), and Honduras (25%).

In May 2011, he announced he would not be a candidate, but a few weeks later he said he had not completely ruled out the possibility. In December 2011, Trump was suggested as a possible Vice Presidential selection by Michele Bachmann. Bachmann has since suspended her presidential campaign.

By going through the specifics of why providing access to financial services in countries that are not usually in this position is important, he emphasizes on the social and inclusiveness benefits of remittances.
Leon Isaacs, Chief Executive Officer - Developing Markets Associates Limited (DMA) has over 20 years hands-on experience in the remittance industry and has been involved with two successful start-up money transfer businesses during that time. Before establishing DMA, Leon was part of the senior management team running Coinstar Money Transfer Limited (formerly Travelex Money Transfer Limited). Aside from his functional responsibilities Leon was responsible for the business in UK, Sub-Saharan Africa, Ireland, Belgium and Netherlands. Prior to this, Leon was Commercial & Marketing Director at MoneyGram International and worked for the Thomas Cook Group. He began his career with NatWest Bank. He was a steering group member of the UK Government's Remittances Task Force, form its inception in 2005 until the completion of its work early in 2010. He is an observer to the G20 Consultative Committee of the Private-Public Sector Partnership on Remittances. Leon has spoken at, and chaired, numerous international conferences on remittances including at the World Bank, the United Nations and the G8. Leon was also Managing Director of the International Association of Money Transfer Networks, an international trade association, 2009 and 2013.

Donald Trump's immigration proposals have generally been imaginative, impractical, inhumane, and sometimes all three. But the plan Trump released this week on how he'd get Mexico to pay for the wall along the southern border of the US hinged on something called remittances. Essentially the idea is to prevent Mexican immigrants in the US from sending money home to their families until the Mexican government agrees to pay for a border wall.
Remittances are an easy political target for Trump's base: The idea of tens of billions of dollars leaving the US to support the families of poor immigrants isn't terribly appealing to people who view the global economy as a zero-sum fight between the US and everyone else.

Remittances are a tremendous force in the global economy. They're essentially a shadow foreign aid system that's bigger (and arguably more effective) than official foreign aid.

In the United States, immigrant workers officially sent $56 billion back home in 2014 — a number substantially higher than the $36 billion from the US foreign aid budget. And economists agree that substantially understates remittances, since it only counts two of the ways migrants can send money home (we'll get to that later). The World Bank estimates that the true number might be closer to $130 billion in remittances — nearly four times what we send in foreign aid.

Migrant remittances play an increasingly central role in post-conflict reconstruction and national development to population displacement; the livelihoods of those left behind vitally depend on remittance transfers. Private remittances are of central importance for restoring stability and enhancing human security in post-conflict countries. Yet the dynamics of conflict-induced remittance flows and the possibilities of leveraging remittances for post-conflict development have been very sparsely researched to date.

Every year, migrants in the US send billions of dollars to their home countries in Latin America in sums dwarfing foreign aid to the region. Over 50% of immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries send a portion of their US earnings -- known as remittances -- back to their families. Mexico is the highest recipient, but a snapshot of a few countries illustrates the broader hemispheric impact.
US Remittances Received in 2012:
• Mexico: $22.4 billion
• Guatemala: $4.7 billion
• El Salvador: $3.9 billion
• Honduras: $2.8 billion
• Haiti: $1.9 billion
In 2011, over $53 billion was remitted to Latin America, while foreign aid in the same year was eight times less at $6.2 billion (Pew Hispanic Trends Project). In El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, remittances constitute 10% or more of their gross domestic product. While remittances flows can reduce poverty at the household level, the effect on the receiving nation's economy remains unclear.
