The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five "big cats" in the genus Panthera. It is a member of the family Felidae with a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. Fossil records found in Italy suggest that in the Pleistocene it ranged as far as Europe and Japan.
Compared to other members of Felidae, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.

A leopard which entered a school in the Indian city of Bangalore injured six people trying to capture it. It took 10 hours to catch and tranquillise the animal, which entered the Vibgyor International school on Sunday.
A scientist, a forestry employee and a TV camera man were among those hurt, although all the injuries were minor.

The Indian leopard is one of the four big cats found in India, apart from Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger and snow leopard.
The Leopard of Panar was a man-eating male leopard alleged to have killed and eaten as many as 400 people over a period of several years in the Kumaon District of Northern India in the early 20th century, after a wounding by a poacher had left it unable to hunt normal prey.
The Panar Leopard was hunted down and killed in 1910 by famed big cat hunter and author Jim Corbett.

Bandipur has a good population of Asian Elephants, Tiger, Leopard, Cheetal and Gaur. Apart from these animals one can spot birds like Red Spurfowl, Lesser Adjutant, Crested Serpent Eagle, Spot-billed Pelican, Emerald Dove, Indian Nightjar, Stork-billed Kingfisher and White-bellied Woodpecker
According to a census conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India (2015), there are estimated 12,000 – 14,000 leopards in the country. The recent leopard census conducted across the country has revealed some positive aspects of the Indian wildlife spectrum.
The Indian leopard is one of the five big cats found in India, apart from Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, snow leopard and clouded leopard.
Nagarhole National Park is most famous for its Leopard sightings due to the high density of its Leopard population.
The most adaptable big cat of the Indian Subcontinent, the leopard has a clear yellow coat marked with black rosettes. It has a small, spotted head, powerful jaws and a long tail, and its underside is white. The normal color of the coat varies considerably in intensity from gold to tawny. The rosettes are unique in individual leopards, like the stripes of a tiger. They are more like large spots (solid) on the limbs and the face, and on the body they turn into rosettes. Their eyes are forward facing and large, but eyesight may not be the most powerful sense of the leopard. It uses its hearing and smell more in survival. It's habitat includes deciduous and evergreen forests, scrub jungle, open country and fringes of human habitation.
Feeding behaviour : Leopards manage to coexist with tigers by hunting smaller prey (they usually tend to go for a prey that weigh between 10-50kg) and hauling carcasses up trees where they feel safe and can eat without any kind of interference. They are good at hunting langurs up in the trees and at the same time can survive well on hares, rodents and even birds like Indian Peafowls and junglefowls if larger prey is not available. It's feeding behaviour is what makes it adapt well to the conditions at hand.

Indian leopards are not common in habitat where tiger density is high, and are wedged between prime tiger habitat on the one side, and cultivated village land on the other. Where the tiger population increases, tigers drive leopards off to areas located closer to human settlements. In the Gir National Park, they are sympatric with Asiatic lions. Elsewhere on the Indian subcontinent, they co-occur with Asiatic black bears, sloth bears, Indian wolves, striped hyenas and wild dogs.

Characteristics
In 1794, Friedrich Albrecht Anton Meyer wrote the first description of Felis fusca, in which he gave account of a panther-like cat from Bengal of about 85.5 cm (33.7 in), with strong legs and a long well-formed tail, head as big as a panther’s, broad muzzle, short ears and small, yellowish grey eyes, light grey ocular bulbs; black at first sight, but on closer examination dark brown with circular darker coloured spots, tinged pale red underneath.
Male Indian leopards grow to between 4 ft 2 in (127 cm) and 4 ft 8 in (142 cm) in body size with a 2 ft 6 in (76 cm) to 3 ft (91 cm) long tail and weigh between 110 and 170 lb (50 and 77 kg). Females are smaller growing to between 3 ft 5 in (104 cm) and 3 ft 10 in (117 cm) in body size with a 2 ft 6 in (76 cm) to 2 ft 10.5 in (87.6 cm) in long tail and weight between 64 and 75 lb (29 and 34 kg).

Nagarhole National Park is most famous for its Leopard sightings due to the high density of its Leopard population. The most adaptable big cat of the Indian Subcontinent, the leopard has a clear yellow coat marked with black rosettes. It has a small, spotted head, powerful jaws and a long tail, and its underside is white. The normal color of the coat varies considerably in intensity from gold to tawny. The rosettes are unique in individual leopards, like the stripes of a tiger. They are more like large spots (solid) on the limbs and the face, and on the body they turn into rosettes. Their eyes are forward facing and large, but eyesight may not be the most powerful sense of the leopard. It uses its hearing and smell more in survival. It's habitat includes deciduous and evergreen forests, scrub jungle, open country and fringes of human habitation. Feeding behaviour : Leopards manage to coexist with tigers by hunting smaller prey (they usually tend to go for a prey that weigh between 10-50kg) and hauling carcasses up trees where they feel safe and can eat without any kind of interference. They are good at hunting langurs up in the trees and at the same time can survive well on hares, rodents and even birds like Indian Peafowls and junglefowls if larger prey is not available. It's feeding behaviour is what makes it adapt well to the conditions at hand. Where the tiger population increases, tigers drive leopards off to areas located closer to human settlements. In the Gir National Park, they are sympatric with Asiatic lions. Elsewhere on the Indian subcontinent, they co-occur with Asiatic black bears, sloth bears, Indian wolves, striped hyenas and wild dogs. The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five "big cats" in the genus Panthera. It is a member of the family Felidae with a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. Fossil records found in Italy suggest that in the Pleistocene it ranged as far as Europe and Japan. Compared to other members of Felidae, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.

The Common leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) is a leopard subspecies widely distributed on the Indian subcontinent. The species Panthera pardus is classified as Near Threatened by IUCN since 2008 because populations have declined following habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching for the illegal trade of skins and body parts, and persecution due to conflict situations.
Bandipur has a good population of Asian Elephants, Tiger, Leopard, Cheetal and Gaur. Apart from these animals one can spot birds like Red Spurfowl, Lesser Adjutant, Crested Serpent Eagle, Spot-billed Pelican, Emerald Dove, Indian Nightjar, Stork-billed Kingfisher and White-bellied Woodpecker
According to a census conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India (2015), there are estimated 12,000 – 14,000 leopards in the country. The recent leopard census conducted across the country has revealed some positive aspects of the Indian wildlife spectrum.
The Indian leopard is one of the five big cats found in India, apart from Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, snow leopard and clouded leopard.
Nagarhole National Park is most famous for its Leopard sightings due to the high density of its Leopard population.
The most adaptable big cat of the Indian Subcontinent, the leopard has a clear yellow coat marked with black rosettes. It has a small, spotted head, powerful jaws and a long tail, and its underside is white. The normal color of the coat varies considerably in intensity from gold to tawny. The rosettes are unique in individual leopards, like the stripes of a tiger. They are more like large spots (solid) on the limbs and the face, and on the body they turn into rosettes. Their eyes are forward facing and large, but eyesight may not be the most powerful sense of the leopard. It uses its hearing and smell more in survival. It's habitat includes deciduous and evergreen forests, scrub jungle, open country and fringes of human habitation.
Feeding behaviour : Leopards manage to coexist with tigers by hunting smaller prey (they usually tend to go for a prey that weigh between 10-50kg) and hauling carcasses up trees where they feel safe and can eat without any kind of interference. They are good at hunting langurs up in the trees and at the same time can survive well on hares, rodents and even birds like Indian Peafowls and junglefowls if larger prey is not available. It's feeding behaviour is what makes it adapt well to the conditions at hand.

Where the tiger population increases, tigers drive leopards off to areas located closer to human settlements. In the Gir National Park, they are sympatric with Asiatic lions. The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five "big cats" in the genus Panthera. It is a member of the family Felidae with a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. Fossil records found in Italy suggest that in the Pleistocene it ranged as far as Europe and Japan. Compared to other members of Felidae, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.

A leopard which entered a school in the Indian city of Bangalore injured six people trying to capture it. It took 10 hours to catch and tranquillise the animal, which entered the Vibgyor International school on Sunday.
A scientist, a forestry employee and a TV camera man were among those hurt, although all the injuries were minor.

The Indian leopard is one of the four big cats found in India, apart from Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger and snow leopard.
The Leopard of Panar was a man-eating male leopard alleged to have killed and eaten as many as 400 people over a period of several years in the Kumaon District of Northern India in the early 20th century, after a wounding by a poacher had left it unable to hunt normal prey.
The Panar Leopard was hunted down and killed in 1910 by famed big cat hunter and author Jim Corbett.

The Common leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) is a leopard subspecies widely distributed on the Indian subcontinent. The species Panthera pardus is classified as Near Threatened by IUCN since 2008 because populations have declined following habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching for the illegal trade of skins and body parts, and persecution due to conflict situations.
Bandipur has a good population of Asian Elephants, Tiger, Leopard, Cheetal and Gaur. Apart from these animals one can spot birds like Red Spurfowl, Lesser Adjutant, Crested Serpent Eagle, Spot-billed Pelican, Emerald Dove, Indian Nightjar, Stork-billed Kingfisher and White-bellied Woodpecker
According to a census conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India (2015), there are estimated 12,000 – 14,000 leopards in the country. The recent leopard census conducted across the country has revealed some positive aspects of the Indian wildlife spectrum.
The Indian leopard is one of the five big cats found in India, apart from Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, snow leopard and clouded leopard.
Nagarhole National Park is most famous for its Leopard sightings due to the high density of its Leopard population.
The most adaptable big cat of the Indian Subcontinent, the leopard has a clear yellow coat marked with black rosettes. It has a small, spotted head, powerful jaws and a long tail, and its underside is white. The normal color of the coat varies considerably in intensity from gold to tawny. The rosettes are unique in individual leopards, like the stripes of a tiger. They are more like large spots (solid) on the limbs and the face, and on the body they turn into rosettes. Their eyes are forward facing and large, but eyesight may not be the most powerful sense of the leopard. It uses its hearing and smell more in survival. It's habitat includes deciduous and evergreen forests, scrub jungle, open country and fringes of human habitation.
Feeding behaviour : Leopards manage to coexist with tigers by hunting smaller prey (they usually tend to go for a prey that weigh between 10-50kg) and hauling carcasses up trees where they feel safe and can eat without any kind of interference. They are good at hunting langurs up in the trees and at the same time can survive well on hares, rodents and even birds like Indian Peafowls and junglefowls if larger prey is not available. It's feeding behaviour is what makes it adapt well to the conditions at hand.

Indian leopards are not common in habitat where tiger density is high, and are wedged between prime tiger habitat on the one side, and cultivated village land on the other. Where the tiger population increases, tigers drive leopards off to areas located closer to human settlements. In the Gir National Park, they are sympatric with Asiatic lions. Elsewhere on the Indian subcontinent, they co-occur with Asiatic black bears, sloth bears, Indian wolves, striped hyenas and wild dogs.

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five "big cats" in the genus Panthera. It is a member of the family Felidae with a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. Fossil records found in Italy suggest that in the Pleistocene it ranged as far as Europe and Japan. Compared to other members of Felidae, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.

Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.

The shots of the leopards had to be taken from a very large distance at a very low light compelling the use of extreme digital zoom (260X). This has made the pictures noisy. Also my tripod misbehaved as a result of it some frames are shaky.

It is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are declining in large parts of their range. They are threatened by habitat loss and pest control. Their habitats are fragmented and they are illegally hunted so that their pelts may be sold in wildlife trade for medicinal practices and decoration. They have been extirpated in Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuwait, Syria, Libya, Tunisia and most likely Morocco.
