As long as that remains the case, the cause of Irish freedom is safe. I personally thank God that I have lived to see the day when thousands of Irish men and boys, and hundreds of Irish women and girls, were ready to affirm that truth, and to attest it with their lives if need be"
On May 12th,1916, Connolly was shot by firing squad. He had been taken by military ambulance to Kilmainham Prison, carried on a stretcher to a courtyard in the prison, tied to a chair and shot. With the other executed rebels, his body was put into a mass grave with no coffin.

A tribute to my hero, James Connolly, The Scotsman who was instrumental in Ireland's fight for a free, socialist republic. This video features pictures of Connolly's home in Edinburgh's Cowgate, but mostly features iconic images from 1916 in Ireland, and a couple of Hibs pics, as Connolly was an original Hibs fan, present as a small boy On Friday 6th August 1875 at a meeting held in ‘The Catholic Institute’ in St. Mary’s Street, Edinburgh (Now St. Mary’s Street Halls), when Hibs were formed - Hibernian FC's 1st 'celebrity' fan. He later carried Hibs' kit hamper to matches and often went into long bouts of depression whenever his beloved Hibs lost. Connolly's writings home from his time in America are full of questions about how Hibs are getting on.

James Connolly
James Connolly (Irish: Séamas Ó Conghaile; 5 June 1868 – 12 May 1916) was an Irish republican and socialist leader, aligned to syndicalism and the Industrial Workers of the World. He was born in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh, Scotland, to Irish immigrant parents. He left school for working life at the age of 11, but became one of the leading Marxist theorists of his day. He also took a role in Scottish and American politics. He was executed by a British firing squad because of his leadership role in the Easter Rising of 1916.
Early life
Connolly was born in an Irish slum in Edinburgh in 1868. His parents had emigrated to Scotland from Monaghan and settled in Cowgate, an Irish ghetto where thousands of Irish settled. He spoke with a Scottish accent throughout his life.
He was born in St Patrick's Roman Catholic parish, in the Cowgate district of Edinburgh known as "Little Ireland". His father and grandfathers were labourers. He had an education up to the age of about ten in the local Catholic primary school. He then left and worked in labouring jobs. Because of the economic difficulties he was having, like his eldest brother John, he joined the British Army.

On May 12th,1916, Connolly was shot by firing squad. He had been taken by military ambulance to Kilmainham Prison, carried on a stretcher to a courtyard in the prison, tied to a chair and shot. With the other executed rebels, his body was put into a mass grave with no coffin.

Commemorating James Connolly & the Irish Citizen Army - St Laurence O'Tooles CBS , 12th May 2016
On the 12th May 2016 a plaque commemorating the Irish Citizen Army was unveiled at St Laurence O'Tooles CBS , North Wall . The date was of great significance , marking the 100th anniversary of the execution of James Connolly . The pupils gathered at the James Connolly statue opposite Liberty Hall , before marching back to the school , in one of the areas where the Citizen Army were most prominent. The plaque was unveiled by the daughters of Citizen Army members Christy and Dina Crothers (nee Hunter) . The ceremony was chaired by Kevin Glackin , and featured speeches by principal Mark Candon and Jack O'Connor (SIPTU). The ICA roll was read by Anne Matthews . A hundred years ago on 12 May 1916, Irish revolutionary James Connolly was strapped to a chair and executed by British imperialism. News of his death was applauded by Labour MP’s in parliament. Connolly united in word and deed the class struggle and anti-imperialist action. He understood that the liberation of Ireland would strike a major blow for oppressed people everywhere and placed class at the absolute centre of the liberation struggle. A century on, Connolly’s rebel politics – largely misunderstood at the time and still to this day – must be uncovered and the anti-imperialist tradition rebuilt.
Former republican hunger striker Tommy McKearney addressed meetings in Glasgow and Edinburgh to mark the Easter rising, highlighting Connolly’s politics of revolution and their crucial importance for struggle today. Tommy McKearney was a senior member of the military wing of the Republican Movement prior to his incarceration in Long Kesh, where he participated in the 1980 hunger strike for political status. Author of the book The Provisional IRA: from insurrection to parliament, he is today a trade union organiser with the Independent Workers’ Union and one of the most articulate critics of recent developments in the North.

A hundred years ago on 12 May 1916, Irish revolutionary James Connolly was strapped to a chair and executed by British imperialism. News of his death was applauded by Labour MP’s in parliament. Connolly united in word and deed the class struggle and anti-imperialist action. He understood that the liberation of Ireland would strike a major blow for oppressed people everywhere and placed class at the absolute centre of the liberation struggle. A century on, Connolly’s rebel politics – largely misunderstood at the time and still to this day – must be uncovered and the anti-imperialist tradition rebuilt.
Former republican hunger striker Tommy McKearney addressed meetings in Glasgow and Edinburgh to mark the Easter rising, highlighting Connolly’s politics of revolution and their crucial importance for struggle today. James Connolly - Irish Republican (RTE Documentary)
James Connolly (Irish: Séamas Ó Conghaile,[1] 5 June 1868 -- 12 May 1916) was an Irish republican and socialist leader. He was born in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh, Scotland, to Irish immigrant parents. He left school for working life at the age of 11, but became one of the leading Marxist theorists of his day. He also took a role in Scottish and American politics. He was executed by a British firing squad because of his leadership role in the Easter Rising of 1916. -
